What will make our football program legit?

part of the luxury of having 90 scholarships is that you are supposed to be able to deal with injuries better than an FCS school. OSU's injury situation doesn't diminish this accomplishment. beating a PAC-12 team is an incredible accomplishment, and should be celebrated.

in the preseason, i'm guesssing most Hornet fans chalked this one up as a loss, and figured you needed to go 8-2 to make the playoffs. now, that 8-2 gets you a top seed. and, i'm guessing you just raised the expectations on that 8-2!

EWU looks like they will be formidable; they have over 400 yards midway through the 4th vs. Washington. 3 TO's are killing them. MSU looks tough based on their outing vs. Utah. S. Utah is getting beaten up by S. Dakota State. Hard to tell about Montana. I think my Ags are a year away, but, you never know what the Causeway will bring!

Congrats. Having been at Stanford on that memorable night in 2005, I can understand how you guys are feeling tonight!

screw the injuries...you outplayed them.

Appreciate the sentiments Dr. Mike. As someone who was insanely jealous of your win over Stanford, at least we can now stand together

Yep.

While I realize a win against a young, injury-ridden OSU team isn't going to start landing the program elite recruits, it SHOULD really help with recruiting against other Big Sky programs. EWU may have last season's FCS title to hang their hat on, but the Hornets have the Big Sky Conference's first and only win against an FBS program on their resume now (at least until UC Davis officially joins the conference). That certainly can't hurt. Going in to today's game, the Big Sky was 0-48 all-time against the FBS.

Montana State beat Colorado a few years back...

And then lost to a D-II the very next week.

(That eyeroll is intended for the Kitties, not you, Stung.)

Funny, because several sources I've read on the net keep stating that this is the conferences first win against the FBS. Maybe they are considering when the NCAA went from D1 A and D1 AA to the FBS and FCS? I don't know.

I knew I should have researched to make sure they were correct. It didn't sound right, but I bought in. I've also heard that OSU has lost to a Big Sky program before as well, but I can't recall who and when.

They MIGHT mean B(C)$, but then they'd STILL be wrong, as GCM notes. Montana has a history of taking Idaho to the woodshed. Perhaps that's why the Vandals quit playing them....

Most of the FBS media was reporting that the Big Sky had never beaten a PAC-10(12) team............ until now. Great job.

SH. That was also the year they thumped Furman in the first round but lost to ASU the next weekend. FWIW

Among Monday’s highlights:

•The announcement of a new half-hour football coaches TV show that will begin production in the coming weeks.

Well SD, I started this thread because I noticed there had been some efforts to improve the program overall. I thought now would be the time for the school to stop making incremental changes and start to make a big push. I threw out some ideas, and you had some great suggestions. Little did I know that Sperbeck and Wanless appear to already be on that same page. A TV show? That's what I'm talking about.

Beer garden is great. I don't know if drinking is allowed in the stadium, but you can set one up for tailgating. Again, make it school sponsored so you can take the profits. Go to large local businesses and ask if you can leave schedules, ticket discounts and flyers advertising for your pregame festivities in their lunch room. I bet there are a lot of people who would come to games, but when Saturday rolls around, they've simply forgotten about it because it's not in front of their face.

Alcohol sales are banned at CSU sporting events at CSU campuses. Would need to get the Chancellor to reverse his decision which isnt likely.

However, alcoholic beverages can be given away prior to kickoff at football games. Last year, although not at Sac State, my buddies and I were on the bus to the Stanford game and they gave away beer and wine on the bus. Once we got to Stanford, they gave more away. Not only that, but they allowed us to bring our own alcohol along as well, we had two ice chests that we brought with us.

I was at the SDSU vs Cal Poly opening day game and alcohol was sold and served during the game. The game was at The Q (Qualcomm Stadium) which isn't on the SDSU campus. But from what I now, alcohol isn't prohibited from CSU campuses either. I work at CSULB and it is sold in one of the restaurants on campus.

I believe CSUS stopped selling alcohol inside the stadium my freshman year (2003). I remember being pretty bitter about that as I would have to smuggle alcohol in to the games.

All this policy change did was cause folks to slam beers in the parking lot and go in to the game hammered. This wears off about the beginning of the second quarter and you lose your buzz and want a nap... lol

Bring back beer!

Utilize the Pat Hill (Fresno St) philosophy, "anybody, any where, anytime". Score the Ws. And if you don't score the Ws, scare the hell out of 'em like Cal Poly did to Wisconsin last season. That will also make the program legit to those out of Sac town and Cali.

Good point but that Pat Hill philosophy can backfire in a terrible way. SDSU was somewhat decent in the late 90’s under Tollner (LV Bowl appearance was their last bowl until last season) then the AD and Tollner came up with the idea of “scheduling up”. Needless to say SDSU never won any of the big names they scheduled (Michigan, Ohio State, Pac-10 programs, etc) and in no time the Aztec football program was spiraling downward and into complete irrelevance.

Yeah, FSU hasn't won many of theirs either. But, it lands you credibility. Cal Poly didn't beat Wisconsin, but the fact that B1G member Wisconsin had to go into over time to beat the Mustangs raises the legitimacy of the program.

As far as Tollner's scheduling up SDSU goes, there much more to what led them to failure w/ that philosophy. I'm also a member on the Aztec forum and there is some discussion going on relevant to that period. Half those games were coached by Tom Craft who, although a successful JUCO HC, had his issues, personally and administratively, while at SDSU.

Yeah SDSU was terrible at selecting HC’s until Hoke showed up. I’m still skeptical about that program keeping it together with him gone now.

We were in the same nasty position here after Moosh got done destroying the Hornet program. Had we followed up with a terrible HC hire, Hornet football would probably be on the chopping block right now.
