Wheelwright Leaves school?

Midmajor??

Active member
Twitter is blowing up that Gelaun returned home to Cali. If this is true is it a major blow to the team this year?
I heard he was ready to start this year and take the team to the NCAA's........ I'm surprised to see him leave the first week of the school year......

I think this is about a 50/50 thing, if it is in fact true.

Gelaun is a good player, but he is also very eratic, there were times I wished he wasnt in games last year, cause it seemed every time he was he was turning the ball over and giving the other team momentum during very crucial times, (Montana BSCC game, vs ECU) and he does take bad shots (sometimes they go in) and I thought a lot of the times he played kinda selfish. But the kid can play, he's a baller, and his talent will be missed. If of course he is in fact leaving.

@bigskybball: According to his twitter feed, Gelaun Wheelwright will be transferring from Weber St. That's too bad. Seemed like a great situation for him.

Looks like he posted on his twitter account that he left the program.

While this is unfortunate for Weber, I can't say I'm entirely surprised. It does seem like Wheelwright really wanted to be the next Lillard as the feature guy at WSU, but we all know that was never going to happen. Although we can't know for sure why he's leaving, I'd bet it's something along those lines. Randy is a team-first coach, and personally, I've never gotten the team-first vibe from Wheels. It makes me sad, because he is hugely talented, but every time he touched the ball, I cringed at his lazy approach on the court, not being sure what we'd get out of him on a given possession. I wish him the best, but I really don't think he's going to find something better than Weber. :ohno:

Wheelright leaving just means someone off the bench is going to have to step up, good thing we have plenty of players who can.

Dang, kind of a bummer. We are down to 11 scholarship players for next year. I really like Wheelright, but he did seem to have a " me first" attitude while playing. This leaves up pretty thin on the guard line. Who starts at the SG now? Its got to be either Williams or Senglin? Who is our back up PG? Gittens is not going to red shirt now. Is there any JC player that can come in and help? Im wishing Zaid was still here. Im sure we will be fine and move on, but this is a pretty big hit on our guard line. :wall:

Well that clears out that recruiting class entirely Fields, Brown, now Wheelwright. That's a little concerning. Seems highly inefficient, & a lot of time & energy wasted.

There is something else going on here. I heard that Barrinton Collins is out for the entire year for breaking multiple NCAA rules, and that he will for sure be losing a year of eligibility. Not saying that Collins issues have anything to do with Wheels leaving, but he might be caught up in some of the same issues. They both come from the same high school, and from what I understand were friends. This is PURELY conjecture at best, but if he was going to lose a year and it had to do with academic issues, that might be the reason why he is leaving. He wanted to get a fresh start. Collins has a Red Shirt year to use, and will be back as a JR next year for the football program. Wheels could do the same thing. He still has a Red Shirt to use, if this is the reason.

The other reasons are the usual. He isn't going to be the "GO TO" guy this year. Or, he was going to lose playing time to other players. He might not want to be the starting 2 guard and feels he should be the starting PG and isn't excited about having Senglin become the backup PG, or Senglin is going to be the starting 2 this fall and Wheels was told he was going to be coming off the bench. Maybe Williams out worked him in the summer and has come back playing better and deserves to be the starting 2. Whatever the reason, I'm sure it has to do with playing time. There is always the possibility that it has to do with a girl or family. Who knows why. He left school, and I hope the best for him. I hope he grows up a bit and figures out life if about working with others and being a part of a team. Regrettably for Wheels, the high point of his athletic career was against Montana on Valentines Day. He had a great game and a lot of us felt he was coming along nicely. Time to move forward. Good luck Gelaun, thank you for your efforts. Wish you were still competing and manning up.

A couple of thoughts:

I was super excited when Wheelright & Shai Fields committed to Weber. However, I was a little nervous thinking that they are both player first type guys. A few years later neither one is with the team.

Gelaun was challenged last year to work on his game to replace some of Scotty's scoring. I had heard that he was working really hard and had a good attitude.

A friend told me to watch coach Rahe's expressions as Gelaun handled the ball last year. It was funny stuff. I don't know if anyone else noticed the nervous/frustration coach had while Wheels was running the point. He would get on him big time after stupid plays.

Does this mean no redshirt for Gittens? Can you play Jrich & Senglin at the same time?

Okay oldrunner whats the inside scoop?

Agree...it is a bit disconcerting.

Can the Cats even get anyone to step in right now to help? Gittens is going to have to play.

Another thought, when he says things just aren't the same, does this have anything to do with us recruiting better players than him? Is he thinking that Weber has moved on?

Could be a sign that Jefferson is a definite possibility. He is leaving after two major recruits visited the campus and is announcing his intention to leave after the sixth day of class. He wasn't going to get "star" mins this season, due to Senglin and Richardson, and his time was going to be further diminished after this season, especially if Jefferson is a definite, because Jeremiah is a 4 year starter type of guy. Who knows...

I'd like to hear what Coach has to say about this. I bet he would be very PC, but behind the scenes would comment on Wheel's commitment, attitude, and competitive drive. I'm guessing.

there is nothing negative on his twitter feed. he sounds happy to be back home and just got there yesterday. and he doesn't yet know where he will transfer too. so sounds like it was a quick decision since you can see his posts a week ago sounded like he was getting settled in school.

i was under the impression seglin and gittens were both going to play this yr. this is too bad we lose this player.

who knows maybe it was family reasons? some things are more important than big sky titles in life (just dont tell that to me or talhad; we will disagree LOL). :bad:

It may well be that Senglin was beating him for the starting 2 spot, if it is true that he is leaving. The day that I was there, they were getting after him, a little bit, about playing soft defense. He seemed to be pouting about it, just a bit. It could also be that they got a commitment from another player who was also better than him. We probably will never know. I'm sorry to see him leave and I wish the best for him.

For the program, it means more PT for the freshmen and another opportunity for a high school kid, out there somewhere.

Something happened over the weekend. To me it has more to do with him than the team. Is there a commitment Olds? :)

i hope for the best for wheels. i felt bad for him his fresh yr. if i was him i would have left and not made it through that yr. thats a hard thing to go through.

Here are my thoughts - http://www.bigskybball.com/2013/09/gelaun-wheelwright-will-reportedly.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Tough loss, though certainly not insurmountable.

Even bigger than who will start at the 2 (I suspect either Berry will slide over or Senglin will slide in)... who backs up Richardson? It hurts from a depth standpoint for sure.
