When did the university/athletics stop trying or caring?

The contract ends in under 20 days there is no need to just let them go yet. We probably won’t here a for sure answer until the start of April but from what I’ve heard they won’t be back

Why wait until the contract ends to announce they won't be retained and start the search for a new coach? That's done all the time everywhere else.

There seems to be so much apathy in the program right now. I had some involvement with the team from 2016 (the last time we won the Big Sky) to 2020 and as soon as they gave Coach Rahe that contract extension, things started to go downhill. Now almost a decade later, the program still hasn’t recovered. Dillon Jones was a bright spot and I think Duft is a great guy, but after Rahe retired we really needed someone who could come in and shake things up. The program desperately needs a course correction.

Maybe this is unrelated but the lack of local recruiting has been frustrating although I guess it shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Brenden Morris definitely couldve helped the team but was never given an opportunity. Mackay Cannon was benched after a stellar freshman year and transferred to BYU. Spencer Johnson had a solid career at BYU after he left. Tim Fuller was a great blue collar player but got pushed out by Rahe and went to UVU. Trevin Leonhart (a Davis High kid) just beat us a few months ago at home and is starting point guard on a great UVU team. We’ve clearly become the worst team in Northern Utah and it’s not even close. We don’t recruit any local kids, our fan base is apathetic, and until there’s a coaching chance I don’t see anything changes.

I heard differently. Personally, I hope you are right, but my source is fairly sound. Would be an absolutely wasted opportunity though. Duft's contract is up. The program is limping along barely staying relevant. We need new blood and direction. Yet, there are no plans for change.

If that's the case and Duft is extended, you're right, it's a wasted opportunity. The management of athletics at WSU seems inadequate these past few years and I'm talking lazy inside only promotions, little marketing, no apparent excitement given. Men's basketball has become stale, the expectations bar has been driven into the dirt. Seems to me that there's no accountability, no pushback from sources like the Wildcat Club, senior administration, etc. Is there even a board of trustees anymore at WSU? As a fan I have grown so disappointed and angry that willingness to pushback from the outside is needed/deserved. Fans?!

Retaining Duft is a self imposed death penalty to the bball program. It’s lazy, predictable with this admin and it’s proof that they do not have a pulse on the community. Attendance has dropped by half in the last few years and was trending that way under Rahe.
Weber last made the ncaa tournament in 2016. Nine freaking
years. Weber has had some really good players in those years but we haven’t had a great big since bolomboy. Almost ten years. Recruiting has been below average as well. Speed and athleticism have not been our friend. Counting on European players to save the day seems to be a lazy way to succeed. I guarantee there are a multiple players in Utah that would play here. Look at the rosters at UVU, U tech and SUU. Weber has one! Granted two recruits are on missions currently but they’ll come back freshman and will take time to develop.
Duft has yet to recruit a quality big and has not developed a big.
Since Weber last won the big sky both Montana and Montana st have been to the ncaa 3 times. Good for them but unacceptable for Weber. Serious Weber fans are pissed and demand a change.
The AD either has no authority or no stones to go outside the program. Once again, lazy. The loyalty factor has to stop. Hiring from within has been a disaster. This is Larry farmer bad. This includes the AD getting his job. If anyone has the ear of the AD please get him to listen to the community. Read the room.
With the current roster Weber is looking at last place next year. Weber is bringing 4 freshman but you don’t win with freshman.
Sorry for the rant and the syntax but I’m about to become a full time BYU fan and leave Weber in the dust. That’s 60 years of fandom being flushed.

My source is a player on the team but they might not know either 🤷🏻‍♂️ I hope they are right but who knows

No question that Weber State can/should be a lot better than what we have seen under Duft. Dillon Jones was clearly the most talented player in the Big Sky last season. Going one and done in the conferenxe tournament with him is unacceptable. I wouldn't be as concerned about one down season if the team performed up to talent when they had the players. If you are going to move on from a coach, this is a good year to do it. UNLV fired there coach so Barret Peery is potentially available.

If they keep Duft, they need to slash ticket prices 65% (seeing the team had a .35 winning percentage). This is about the only way I’d go to a game at the Dee Events Center…otherwise, move them back to the Swenson Gym for the 1,500 or so who would still want to go.

They need to move on and try to find a way to revive this once successful program. Crompton isn’t up for the task. How Mental got a four-year deal is baffling. Really, all three need to go.

It’s a tough business and sucks more than ever with transfer portal and NIL, but that is the the deal now.

Looks like Weber is going hard after two D-2 players 6-6 forward 5-11 guard. Pretty much puts to bed any chance they are letting him go. If they were moving on they’ve had a week to announce it.
Plus would they be recruiting if he was done? I think not.

Weird idea and hopefully somebody will chime in on this (please correct me if I am wrong) and provide more information. Yet, why not give Dan Russell a one year interim contract and see what he does as the HC? I really feel Russell could be a diamond in the rough.

I'm not anti-Eric Duft. I think he is a good guy. However, I don't think he is a good HC. Coach Rahe was only as great as his assistants. His kryptonite was always who else was on his bench and how good where they. Rahe's turn from great to average happened while Duft was his associate HC. Our last championship occurred when Smiley was on our bench. Nothing since and the program has been stagnant. It will not get better with another year of Duft as the HC. I've heard that the AD doesn't have a plan and that there is no incentive to make a major change. Regardless, there is real anger. The AD has to do something. Another year with Duft as the HC means another year of not doing enough. Another year of mediocrity. Another year on the outside looking in. Another year of small crowds, no sponsorships, and lost revenue streams. Another year of falling deeper into a hole of irrelevance. Right now the university needs to make a change. It has to happen and it has to happen now.

Well said & I agree. Reading that senior admin. at WSU is focused on the academic side with present budget cuts bringing position cuts, reorganizations, etc., right now athletics is on the back burner. If that means leave it up to the AD, this fan isn't confident that things will change.

So if it's stay the course, be it a bumpy, dull ride, I'll now defer to let the near empty seating at the DEC do the talking. That speaks loudly & is hard to ignore, though the athletic dept. is doing nothing to change it. I'm enjoying following the instate successful programs in men's BB, be it with jealousy. They don't always win & shouldn't be expected to, like with the Wildcats, but there's usually excitement & confidence in finding winning ways. Enough said...:censored:

I agree with both last two posts. Admin is content with current status. Sports is less than important to them. They literally don’t care. If they had wanted they could have done national search for both football and basketball. They should have and chose not to. This was done with intent. I MEAN WHO DOESN’T DO A NATIONAL SEARCH!?!? Weber St that’s who! I’ve actually heard that this is part of a larger plan to show that the Dee is under used, too expensive to run and a waste of space. With little attendance it will give them an excuse to tear it down and put in a 4,000 seat arena. Like Portland, sac st. They will use public money like other state schools to renovate and build. Weber is in a position like they never have been before. It’s ugly and will get worse. Those with power and control are under qualified for their important positions. They should be replaced.

I'm sorry but there is NO master plan to tear down the DEE and use that space for a smaller basketball arena. IF they wanted a smaller arena, they would just use Swenson. This University is trying to cut $$$ not tear down an arena that they collect massive amounts of fees for groups to use such as graduations and religious things.
The longer time goes on without any type of announcement regarding Duft means the AD has no freaking plans or clue about anything.
