Which QB is best suited for Ill game?

Larry Weir gave a quick glimpse of the Ill St Redbirds in his post game show yesterday. As Larry pointed out several players have a lot of tackles for loss. Does that disruptive defensive line bode well for Vernon to start or should Pardon continue to lead the passing game?
Go Eagles!

Go Eagles!

They're 5th in the nation in sacks and 9th in pass defense efficiency. I like Adams obviously for is evasiveness but he also seems to open up the run game more.

This is a tough draw for us, but it won't get any easier even if we can find a way to win this game. They beat NDSU in the regular season, and they beat App State in the road. Even in a "down" year, that's no easy feat.

As for the Qb situation, I think we'll see some combination of both, especially if whoever starts struggles early.

They lost to NDSU in the regular season - one of three losses.
Their other losses are kind of bad losses too.
And their wins aren't all that impressive.

That said, the Valley is a tough conference so getting through that is impressive in and of itself.

As for the subject of this thread, I think they should start Adams just to see how he feels in the playoffs, and because the Redbirds defense seems to thrive on pocket passers. If Adams struggles or his timing or mechanics are off, Baldwin can always go to Padron. It seems Padron has actually done better off the bench anyways.

Either way I think we have the tools necessary to win this game.

Do our receivers get open more in the 2nd half because the defensive backs are tiring? If so why not start Adams and get the defense wore out from chasing him around then play Padron to stretch the field with a long passing game?
Which team that the Redbirds lost to are the most similar to the Eagles?

I don't know about that. FBS EMU are always impressive, and EIU, Youngstown, ISUb, ASU, and even UNI are decent and a couple are very solid wins. And they are undefeated on the road.

The MVC teams look tough. The only team to eliminate an MVC team thus far was another MVC team. This'll be a very difficult challenge. It didn't seem like it at first, but suddenly it looks like Montana State has the easier task in getting to the semis with Sam Houston State, who was absolutely manhandled by Cal Poly's defense yesterday.

I agree, I think Adams will give their defense fits and they'll wear themselves out trying to stop him. After ISU's d-team begins to tire, Padron can spend some time in the pocket and light up the Redbird's secondary.

I know Adams is a great talent and will be one of the all time greats, but I think you guys are crazy when you think we should start the freshman over a seasoned veteran in a pressure packed game of this magnitude. To me it is a no brainier that Padron is the guy that should be starting this game. Keep Adams in our back pocket if we need him, but I think we have to go with the cool, calm and collected Padron.

Now is not the time to be gambling. We have more offensive talent at wide receiver then anyone in the country and need to play into that strength.

I'm JUST guessing Baldwin will go with Padron since he's basically won the last 3 games. He does have the experience being the MVP of a BCS game vs Nevada. Vernon will be ready to go! The great thing is Ill St has to prepare for both QB's which still makes it a nightmare. Honestly, I have NO idea what Coach Baldwin will do, but that's what makes him special and why Eastern is winning at this point. Let's just get the defense to play like they do in the 4th quarter when trailing for the whole game, and this will be an easy win, if there is such a thing this year!!

Dozy
What you doing up so early? I have an excuse, I haven't been to bed yet, in Osaka. So what do you think about the QB's?

Shelby Harris and Colton Underwood are going to get through to whoever is quarterback... just saying

What makes this offense so potent is that a 6'5" WR and 2 WR @ 6'2" or better can extend the field deep but can also be a nightmare on quick slants if there is constant pressure. They catch virtually everything and make plays they have no right making! The boys blocking like they have been in protection, Padron or Adams wins the day. :thumb:

Your secondary will have to cover our 6'5 and 6'3 receivers long enough for that event to happen. Unfortunately, your secondary won't know what hit them.

Funny how Ceja has 11 sacks vs Underwood's 10.5 (According to the goredbirds statistics books). Don't get too cocky. Our line won't fold like App State's (mostly freshman and sophomores).

Totally agree...I love watching how the Defense prepares for our WR's. Typically they will play 10 yards off Kauf or Herd to start the game and we just through the quick screen to them and take 6-7 yards every play unless they break one. Then the D starts to creep up and we go deep.

One of my favorite plays is the swing pass we run to Forte...that play was golden in 2010 with TJ and I'm willing to bet Forte will pick up some big yardage on it once or twice this weekend..

Redbirds are 5th in the nation in sacks and by your pass defense efficiency ranking I'm guessing you guys are able to this without a ton of blitzing?

This another reason why Adams can be effective if he gets in the game. QB draws and such.

After looking into their stats, I think they do blitz a lot... their LBs have a lot of sacks and TFL's, which means their pass eff D comes from opposing QBs not getting much time to make their reads and throw. Regardless, I agree that Adams would be a good matchup against them... they're average against the run, allowing 130 per game. Have Vern utilize the the zone read and take advantage of their aggressive DL and LBs, or have Padron call a bunch of quick slants so Kauf, Herd, Edwards and Clark can make them pay with lots of running room after the catch. It's gonna be a fun game of cat and mouse.
