In my opinion MBT should get the chance to see if he can get the offense going. It's not all Jason's fault but we are talking about winning games. Sperbeck also has to do a better job geting this team ready to play. They have no excuses this year. That offense is returning 4 out of 5 starting lineman, they've added 2 very good juco recievers who may both be as talented as Tony Washington. Plus they might have the deepest rb corp in the big sky. There is no excuse for their performance so far this year.

The defense is another story . I don't know what Baiz is doing? I hope they get half way decent and fast. If not it won't matter what the offense does cause you can't out score everyone.

Who should be the Hornet's starting QB?

Open it up! I want the best on the field regardless of any reason that is not attributable to the play on the field.

In the conceited town of Sucky Lowlife Biscuiteater (SLO), I saw a very tentative offense lead by a QB that appeared confused, at times. I do not mean that as a slam on Smith because we have seen some really good games from him. However, I have to add that as soon as I sat down I saw the “little ponies” running drills and they looked more intense/ready for the game. To myself I said, “uh oh!” And, yes, it was a very long trip back……

Where were all the Hornet fans at the Mustang’s Stampede BBQ? I want to see more us down there next time. All the BBQ and beer you can drink.

Oh yeah, our Hornet band kicks the little pony band’s a$$!!!!!!! There was no marching or nothing…..

Go Hornets!!!!

Whoever Sperbeck decides is the best player for that week. He has more information on what decision to make than any of us, so I don't think we are qualified to really say. That being said, I thought MBT was pretty impressive at the end of the CP game, but I haven't seen him in practice and I don't know anything about the leadership skills of any of the QBs, so I will trust Sperbeck will make the right decision. He's forgotten more about the QB position than I probably ever knew.

A redshirt following a grayshirt? I've never heard of that.

I just hope that if this is the case he doesn't have to burn it like we had to do with Garrett.

Its not all that common, but its done. Come on SH, get up to speed on this stuff. We actually sent one of our hs lineman that was here in the fall home and he's coming back this winter and then will likely rs next year. He will then be a beast going forward. The future OL looks to be phenomenal. At least four guys between 6'5 and 6'9!

Hey everyone this is my first post I have done. Like all of you I am frustrated at the level of performance that the hornets have shown in these first couple of games, because I believe that they are capable of beating both the teams that we faced. Were we supposed to win no we were the underdogs but I think that they have not played to their potential. As fans watching this offense over the past couple of years it has gotten better week after week with a few bad weeks but with all of the players signed during the off season expectations were even higher and then to come out and lose by the margin of defeat is disheartening. But reading these posts most people seem to blame the QB which I guess is natural since he is the leader of the offense but you can’t just look at his stats or a couple of bad throws to say “Quarterback Change” there is a much bigger picture. I personally I think that Smith has done OK with what he has had during the games. The hornets offense is a very systematic offense and is dictated by the way the defense lines up. There are a lot of plays that are audibled to a predetermined play at the line of scrimmage based on the D. The WR’s run designed routes with little variation. Therefore if an audible is called at the line based on a blitz a WR becomes the hot route if he doesn’t run the route he is supposed to it usually ends up being an incomplete pass or a run loss by the QB. Sound familiar? There have been numerous routes ran incorrectly the first couple of games, which most don’t know. There have been some nice grabs and some drops that should have been caught and some which would have been great catches but the saying is “if it hits your hands you should catch it.” Is that realistic, probably not but there have been some mistakes. Penalties have hurt the hornets especially holding on first and second downs and off sides on third and fourth. These quickly turn a pass/run into a pass. When you are down by multiple TD guess what you are going to pass and it’s tougher to complete a pass when the D knows. I think the UNLV game wasn’t a great game to measure Smith didn’t get a lot of opportunity and the team as a whole didn’t show anything. As far as Cal Poly he was 14 of 20, 177 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT in the first half. 2 of 10, 40 yds, 1 INT in the second half. There were a couple of dropped passes a few more that hit the receivers hands, a couple of wrong routes, and a couple where the timing was just a little off. The first INT there was 23 sec left in the half you have to force it down the field. The second INT was a great throw low in the end zone where only his receiver could get it. That DB just reached down and grabbed it when Heath rolled to his back. Also let me inform you that it was 31-12 with 9min to go in the 3rd before the hornets got the ball. Smith was not consistent in that first drive in the 3rd but marched them back down the field and then that second INT happened. I believe that the hornets are very close getting over that hump of a new group of offensive weapons that are so close in getting that timing down, understanding where each person is going to be on a certain play, not making those mental mistakes, and racking up huge numbers on offense. It’s not if they are going to click it’s when. By switching quarterback based on the team losing games that they were the underdogs you start back to where you began you lose your trust, leadership, timing, and cohesiveness they have been building.

Welcome HM!

The topic of the thread is about the QB, you can always start a new thread discussing other positions if you'd like. :)

There is a tendency to get "off topic" on these boards, something that is very frustrating to say the least.

If you check out SacRat's blog, he has a link to Sperbeck's call in to This Week in the Big Sky... Sperbeck says that MBT will be given a chance to play tomorrow if Smith's ineffectiveness continues.

Great, competition thats all anyone was asking for! Good luck to Jason, MBT and the rest of the Hornets, lets beat those Eagles!

so how many of you think that MBT should be the starting QB now after Smith played a near perfect game except for the one INT?

Don't forget about his fumble as well. Both turnovers led to EWU TD's. But to answer your question, yes Smith looked sharp and had a solid game. He was efficient and found the open receivers. He should have had 2 TD in the stats but the ref blew the call on the Reed goal line reach. Overall, he had a great game, the only thing missing was the win.

I'm still calling for MTB! I think has as much to do with the defense as it does with Smith's deficiencies. Even though Smith's stats looked good, I think the numbers are a little misleading. The biggest problem I have with him is his lack of arm strength. At least 4 or 5 times he would throw a quick pass to the WR on a screen or just quick out let. Each time the ball floated out, and was low, allowing the DB to stop the play for no game. I also don't think he looks down field enough. On other occassions he had a TE or WR running open down field and he never even looked at them. I don't feel the defense respects his ability to CONSISTENTLY throw down field.

With the defense we have this year, we need someone that will challenge the defense and make big plays. If we had a legitimate defense then maybe Smith would be the better option - more of a game manager. I see Smith as more of a Shawn Hill type of QB - make good decisions but won't win the game for you. If we want to win any games this year, we will need to someone that can put up SIGNIFICANT points.

I thought Smith was pretty good against EWU, much better than in SLO. I was pleasently surprised, however, I thought that after half MBT should have been given some time, at least in the fourth when the game was pretty much over.

Actually his fumble was not returned for a touchdown...(Not sure what game you were watching) For once the defense stepped up. Smith played very well with what he was handed by our awlful defense. They have too many issues to name!!!
Going forward, I am hoping this is an eye opener for our defensive coaches and they make some necessary changes.

I agree with OldHarnet. My hat's of to Smith who had a much better game but he still does not look sharp. Throwing behind receivers, soft passes, etc. I thought that MBT would come in when it looked like Smith was running out of steam in the second half but Sperbeck seems to be bullheaded and will live or die with Smith.

My apologies...with all the EWU TD's, I obviously lost track of them all.
