Who Should Replace Sears

It seems unlikely that Weber is going to win more than 1-2 more games this season. Sears will not get to his goal of 4 wins this season. Unfortunately, it appears time to talk about who should replace Jody Sears. We are not going to get Ron McBride to come out of retirement, and the next best thing would be LaVell Edwards, which is also not going to happen.

My feeling is that Weber State needs to get someone familiar with the State of Utah and the Big Sky Conference for recruiting purposes. Can deal with returned LDS missionaries. Knows how to market the program and bring fans to the games. And can hold players to a high standard. Here is my short list of candidates.

1. Kevin McGiven, Utah State Assistant Coach (Former WSU Assistant under Ron McBride)

2. Nick Howell, BYU Assistant Coach (Weber State Alum, Ben Lomond HS Grad)

3. Kalani Sitake, Utah Assistant Coach

Unless some of the ones mentioned above want to take a paycut to run their own team I don't see them leaving.

If WSU is not willing to pay a quality coach what he is worth, then why have a football team at all? But I think that an FCS Head Coach usually makes about the same if not a little more than an FBS assistant. I found this article in USA today.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/story/2011-11-17/cover-college-football-coaches-salaries-rise/51242232/1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In 2011, all coaches at Utah State received a little over 1,000,000. Gary Anderson was paid 352,000. Which meant that the rest of the staff split about 648,000. Which means that the coordinators probably received about 115,000-130,000. Utah probably pays their assistant coaches a little better. I haven't found a firm source on what an FCS head coach makes, but most sites I have visited state that they salary for an FCS head coach is just around, or a little under 200,000. Kalani Sitake would probably need to take a pay cut to come to Weber State, but Weber probably has the money to lure McGiven or Howell. Let's just take him off the list.

So, having a 4th new head coach and coaching staff in four yeas is the answer???? We probably have the youngest team in all of Division 1 football. 11 seniors on the team and playing mostly freshmen, RS freshmen and sophomores. JLS dismissed most of the skill players when he got here and Sears had NO time to recruit. Many of JLS's recruits didn't even show up for fall football because he wasn't here.

Ok, let's get a new coach and a new staff so we can have another year just like this one.

Yes, getting a new head coach IS part of the answer. How bad does it have to get before some of you realize that Sears is an absolutely horrible head football coach?

Aaron roderick is familiar with the State of Utah, he played at BYU and currently coaches at Utah, so he understands the the LDS missionaries and how the State works. Having played, coached and currently living in this area he should know how to attract fans and players and the standards the players and fans will want and need.

Derrick Odum is very familiar with Utah and the Ogden area. We want Ron McBride but can't get him well Derrick played for him and was a Graduate Assistant under him. So this means he knows the State and knows the conference and what it takes to get players, win and bring people to the game. He will also understand the LDS Missionaries and how to hold the players to a high standards. He also has coaching experience in the conference when he was coaching at Montana.

Why don't we just randomly pick someone out of the phone book to replace Sears? We can't get any lower, that's for sure.

i think we hired john L at 200k per year base pay. wouldnt that have made him the highest paid big sky fball coach? i seem to recall bobby made less than that and i never saw what they paid flrugrad or the new coach.

fcs salaries arent as high as some might be assuming. there are big sky bball coaches making under 100k.

some might consider a pay cut for the job title and running a DI program. we dont know. i would assume we could verify no suu assistants make anywhere close to 200k.

if weber finishes the season 2-10 or 1-11 will they rehire?

Great questions. All I know is that Weber has a lot of starters back from last season, that in and of itself, isnt' a very good sign for the coaching staff.

Ok, let's keep HC Sears on and the same staff (except OC will probably flee after season if he's smart) so we can have another year just like this one. After all, the same excuses can be made next season...a young team playing mostly freshmen, sophomores, RS whatevers... :twocents:

Yes, at this point it is the answer. Sears is showing absolutely NOTHING but embarrassing play. Weber really is at rock bottom so another coaching change can't set them back any further.

You have to find an up and coming D1 assistant coach because of the salary differences in FBS vs FCS. There are several D1 coordinators that would be willing to make the transition but they are hard to find and might not be the best fit. The good thing going for us is the appeal of the conference and if you win here you will go places.

For the people arguing to keep Sears, and they are saying it BC the team is young, then the timing is never better for a new coach to get a young team. Sears isn't getting it done and everything looks bad and you don't want the kids to fall off. Win or go home, its in the contract. Something has to happen to get this team going.

Hiring McBride or LaVell would be a huge mistake. Even if we turn it around how long will they be here for? Mcbride is 74 and Edwards is 83! That would just put us in rehiring position shortly down the road and back to where we are now.

So honestly who can guess what Bovee will do in this situation. Will Sears be back? In that contract, its NOT a guarantee that IF he doesn't get 4 wins then he is gone. Im not saying one way or another but you never know, Sears might be back next year. :coffee:

This garbage about coaches not wanting to take a head coaching position based on pay is total hog wash. There is no way that Eastern, Northern Arizona, Southern Utah, or a bunch of other good FCS programs can pay better than Weber. Eastern Washington's game against Weber didn't even break 10K, and that was one of their biggest attended games ever. Two years ago, that was Weber's average attendance. To become a head coach, yes, a lot of guys would take the pay cut to run their own program. 200K is a lot of dough people.

To me, I think Sears should be demoted to defensive coordinator and Pflu promoted to head coach. With Morton taking over the offense.

Usually, I like to give new coaches the benefit of the doubt, especially if thier teams show progress, and after our win over SFA I was getting pretty hyped, but since then there has been absolutely 0 progress made on the football field. This team should be getting better week to week, but this one is getting worse, I am not seeing any signs that the team and program has gotten any better from last year.

I agree Weber should be capable of getting a caple coach at an amount they can afford to pay, especially one looking for that HC opportunity. I'm on the fence with Pflu/Sears. I like the thought of it because they are already in the program and each has that experience, plus both seem like decent guys capable of getting the jobs done. However, the horrendous season being experience and one that will be difficult to recover from has basically come at their hands. I realize Satan put them in a huge hole but there is really no denying that this team has shown zero movement in a positive direction. I'm glad I don't have to make the decision but I truly feel one needs to be made.
