Who will start at QB this year?

QB controversy will doom this team right from the start, we need to pick a starter and stick with him. Howland has become the most fragile QB in PSU history, I say go with Hubel, so we can build around him. Unless Hagan just comes out of nowhere.

I like all of our quarterbacks for different reasons, but when push comes to shove, I think Hubel will be the first starter. Results will determine if he stays there. Although it states Howland is a junior, most likely he will gain another year of eligibility. I agree Hagan is the big unknown, but very few true freshman our ready to start right away, especially when the team has 4 returning QB's. It's starting to feel like the best part of the year, football season!

After seeing the close to 900 yards Hubel threw for against Montana and Weber, it's hard for me not to want to see him playing this year.

All that matters is Mouse liking Howland more. Unless Howland gets injured, or Hubel really progresses in fall camp, I don't see Mouse making a change. Even with White's great performances 2 years ago, and his perceived arm advantages, Howland got the job last year. I doubt that had anything to do with pocket presence, and more with attitude. With a quicker release, and an adjusted line, one would hope he can actually play an entire game.

Of course, the real point in all of this is that neither Howland or Hubel will do well unless some receivers step up. Something tells me that is the factor that would be keeping Mouse up at night.

I agree. Both Howland and Hubel can do a competent job with the Run and Shoot - Hubel, at least, proved it last year. But WRs?! I counted 18 on the roster. Just counting them would put Davis to sleep. Or leave him sleepless. All new. I've given up figuring this - che sera sera. We'll just have to see. Me, I'm worrying about defense, not offense. It blew apart last year. Can Glanville put it back together with the recruits? Can his 4-3 work at the FCS level? We have the LBs, but it also takes the down guys and a backfield. Like the WRs, there are too many unknowns.

To your point, I think the 3-4 should do fine if the JUCO guys on the line are as good as Glanville seems to think they are. The defensive backs couldn't possibly be worse than they were after the first few games last year. However, I agree with you that they may be the biggest weakness on the team, right up there with the wide outs.

Mouse will get the offense figured out. He put in a new system from scratch with everyone who was used to the run/run/pass days of old. The adjustment period for the receiving corp is basically just as it was last year, and they seemed to get it figured out.

Like pdxfan said, it's going to come down to the defense. If given chances to score, the R & S system will score. One of the huge dropoffs between last year and the prior year was turnover margin, and the lack of speed (depth) at the linebacker spot was a huge cause of that. With more speed available at the linebacker position, we should be able to cover those run lanes and fill that huge gap between the linebackers and the secondary that always seemed to open up later in the games. The gap between a wide receiver having 3-4 steps to catch the ball and having 1-2 steps is the difference between a first down and a drop/fumble.

Kramer Hagan is the most gifted QB of all time.

Dear Kramer,
If this is true, please use your gifts of persuasion to convince your brother to join you at PSU.
Sincerely,

So at this point, one week away from the opener, are most people assuming Howland will start? Schantz indicated as much in his interview on The Game the other day, but I don't think I've seen an official announcement anywhere. What are the chances that we get a two-headed monster like we did for McNeese last season?

Two-headed monster means injury, and after the last two seasons, I don't think that we'll have one QB starting every game this year.

I didn't hear that interview, but my hunch tells me that Howland will be our starter against WOU.

I don't like QB rotations, but I do like going with the hot hand.

I'll bet if Hubel has a start like Howland did last week, we'll see Howland at about the same time we saw Hubel last week.

Hubel right now seems to be the guy and the QB that gives the viks the best chance to win. Howland did show that he could throw the long ball on the first drive of the WOU game. Howland just made some bad reads and that cost him the starting job. Hubel makes good reads, and should be able to put up big numbers against Davis. The talent level between the two I would say is equal.
