Why do I read this rag?

The Bee is at it again. It seems like a great majority of the Sac State headlines that make the sports front page of the Bee are negative. Again today, we have on C1 a story about all of the scholarships that we are losing because of Academics. While I believe that the academics are very important, why are any stories involving such wonderful accomplishments like the Women's Tennis team winning the Big Sky again or the softball squad making the NCAA regionals buried in the Regional Digest. Also in today's Bee, there is a small paragraph mention of the new fieldhouse and the impact it will have on recruits. Seems like something they could do a small story on, coupled with the work Sperbeck is doing to get this program going, and put it on C1, but no. It is on C2, in Joe Davison's Home Cookin section. You can bet your as* that if the construction of the fieldhouse were delayed and way overbudget it would be a big article on C1.

The Bee's coverage of both of the major universities in the area (Sac St. and, yes UCD) is really pathetic. How are these programs going to suceed without support from the local media?

Sorry for the rant, but it is quite frustrating.

I don't disagree with what you said Jason. Its been the policy of the major Sacramento newspaper for quite some time now to give as little coverage as possible to both schools. It is sad...the best way of dealing with it is to not subscribe to the paper. Since its still free online (and you know they will start charging for it someday), I will only read it there...or if someone else bought it and its laying around (i.e. workplace table).

Actually, I think the editors totally skewed the story from Schumacher. He is a good reporter, the editors completely IMO change a lot of what he writes to skew it to their vision...whatever that is.

I heard something interesting this week related to the Bee's anti-Sac bias. Originally, I gather, the Bee took this slant to counter the old Sac Union's pro-Sac bias. Unfortunately, the proper thing to do when the Union went away would have been to eliminate the bias by balancing Sac/Manure Pile coverage. Unfortunately, the Bee has not seen fit to do that. It's not right, it's not fair, but they're the only show in town, so I guess they can do whatever they want.

I can understand your frustration with the Bee. Their coverage of Sac State is terrible at best. The one thing that I do not understand is that not one post about Sac State having 7 teams facing penalties due to poor academic performance. As a fan I would be more upset at that and I would want to know what the current admin. and coaches are going to do to correct it.

This is a four year old reaction, all of the coaches involved are pretty much gone, so now we have to pay for their screwups. Keep winning Conference Championships and it will take care of itself.

Good to hear. I have heard only good things about Sperbeck. I am sure he will get the ship righted quickly.

You know what, the APR is a joke in terms of its time length. They only rate for four years..when everyone knows that it pretty much takes all students 5-6 years. That, and with the NCAA allowing the redshirt year, the APR should be a five-year rate instead of four. But GCM is right, for football, this year's report evenly covers the Mooshagian years. We pretty much saw this one coming.

The other issue is what exactly are they measuring?

If a kid transfers, doesn't that count against the APR? That whomps, but the metric is inconclusive at best.

Also, not that it would affect Sac much, but if someone pulls a Klanq Fu and turns pro w/o his degree but completes it later, that counts to the negative as well. Another problem with this bogus piece of work.
