Why no Minnerly at safety?

I figured he must've gotten hurt, but he played on special teams. Why did he not start?

Frankly, I think Minnerly has been coming along really well and playing great football, so seeing him get benched was odd at this point of the season. Did he have some nagging injury that kept the coaches pessimistic about playing him a full game?

Our back 7 looked pretty poor today, and although Minnerly wouldn't have completely changed that, he would've helped a lot IMO.

From what I hear - Minnerly was told earlier this week he wasn't getting the start because it was non-conference and his backup had been working hard. If that's the case, then he should be back next week, though it seems odd given we were playing a game that might have factored into our playoff status. I'm sure it'll be easily determined if that's the real story is in 6 more days.

Brown did a good job, was in on a few great tackles, though he did blow pass coverage on two plays that both resulted in scores for SUU. I like the kid, but he doesn't have the leadership on the field that Minnerly shows - thus far.

As long as the Eags keep winning, and we have team effort - it's all good.

Minnerly was still in at Safety on quite a few downs. Brown played well at times, but I'm not sure this was really the game to stick a Freshman in the secondary in his first start. SUU's passing attack was unreal.

Minnerly may not have started, but how about that 1st down Jeff got on that fake FG? ;)

Pittman,

Welcome to the board. You've had 6 posts and they all center around Brown having his first start. He did a good job - but again, blew two big plays that resulted in scores for the opponent. He did a pretty good job, but he didn't do it without error. Also, being a leader on the field isn't so much about making all the plays. It's about commanding respect of your teammates, calling out the plays, communicating with your team and coaches... They're both great athletes - Minnerly just appears to be more of a leader and team player, if you will.

Brown may get the start again next week from what I hear - but don't read too much into it. Idaho State should be an easy win for us. As we get into the playoffs it won't be so much about getting backups playing time and experience. If it is, then our coaches aren't at the level we need THEM to be. When the game was on the line, the player with the smarts was on the field. Look for that to be the trend.

Ranger - was great to see that trick play - especially because it worked how Baldwin wanted it to. It appeared a few guys were wide open in the endzone, but I think Jeff made the right decision getting that first down.

Was also great to see special teams have so much success this weekend and really be a huge part of this win. It should be an offensive blowout next week - which would be good for them to go into a bye week (and preparations for playoffs) with a solid win on the mind. It's only going to get colder, and perhaps whiter in Cheney over the next few weeks - snow is forecast several times this next week - which means by December 4th - we could be shoveling snow off the turf.

Regarding attendance from another posting - it was piss poor. Die hards were there, almost no students, and huge gaps in the tailgating spots. I would expect the same next weekend - but if we go into the playoffs, at HOME, and this is what we can muster up? I hope there is some phenomenal marketing plan in place to get more students, staff, locals, Spokanites there - but I won't hold my breath either.

A brilliant play call IMO. I had my 11-year-old brother down on the side line, and when that play happened, I initially thought it was going to be a pass. I think Gehring was wide open down the field. I turned back to Jeff in just enough time to see he was heading right at us and pulled my brother away.

Great play in a great game. Rest assured that SUU will be a legitimate rivalry in the years to come. While it wasn't pretty at times, this was yet another example of how good football teams find ways to win tough games. One more game to stitch up the first BSC 'ship since 2005. :D

Football is a game of match-ups, and who starts at various positions is going to be based on the fact. The good news is that this team actually has the depth to be able to alter those line-ups depending on the situation. One thing I think we can all agree on is that this team has a lot of great young athletes that are able to contribute in a number of different ways. Remember, the majority of this team will be back next year. The future looks bright.

On a side note, I also thought Jeff might try and pass on that fake fg - but he made the right call. It was a great play and I was happy to see us use some creativity in that situation.

Don't know about the onside kick to start the second half, though. You win some, you lose some, I suppose.

That was a great decision by Minnerly. If you can run for the first down, the game is over. He did and it was. I think we had a similar play against CWU where he could have run for the first down, but attempted the throw, and just barely missed the receiver. I think he could have run for the first down on that play too, but went for the big play. Not necessarily wrong against CWU, but in this situation, throwing the ball would have been a bad choice.

Great play by a smart player.

RocktheRed,

Thank you for pointing out that I have no place on this board. I can't stand the heat so I'm definitely getting out of this kitchen... I am partial to several starters and non starters on the team so not a good place for me to be. I will enjoy the games from the stands. God Bless....

Pittman, don't be scared off by RocktheRed. He has his favorites, too (Minnerly comes to mind). We all do. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Stay and post all you want here.

Oh man - pittman, I didn't say you didn't have a place on the board, don't get your panties in a bunch!

We all have our favorites - and Minnerly is one of mine, I'm a sucker for wanting the locals to do well - but, that being said, we all want the TEAM to succeed and so long as that's happening - we all have a right to speak our mind. Even you. You have to agree to disagree at times. But if other people standing up for their favorites gives you an ulcer because your favorite is going up against one of ours, well then, you have a choice to make.

I'm a super fan of a team player. The kid that helps up the opponent. The kid that congratulates his teammate after a great play. The kid that doesn't act like everyone owes them something. And especially the kids that take the opportunity to play college athletics (any sport) to heart, gets their education and doesn't spend all their time thinking they're going pro. (Because at this point in time - only ONE on this current team has an real credible opportunity to do so.)

I'm behind on the yard chores apparently. Y'all have a great day! Come back soon pittman!

Which would be why Minnerly is one of your faves!! :D

Dozy,

I didn't mean to suggest Minnerly is all of those things. I was trying to state to pittman what I look for on and off the field. Character counts - and any player on the team that sports those attributes, I'm a fan of! That goes in any sport.

I should have made it a separate post so that it didn't read as though I was talking about Jeff.

From what I hear, he is though. And a really good student. I wasn't being sarcastic. He's the kind of kid you want to see do well...

To all Fans,
Before I go any further, I would like to say Jeff Minnerly is a very coachable individual. On Thursday during practice Coach Schmedding kept coaching Jeff, and what they were discussing was dead on, the fake FG. It went very smoothly. This young man is a brain in Class Rooms, he has very high GPA. He is one of my favorites, along with the entire team/Coaches.

jpittman,
I am with the rest of our bloggers, stay with us, you may get mad at times, however, we agree to disagree, I know, I am always here. I look at what is posted, and that decides if I get on the blog or not. Stay with us, you will enjoy all of us. I promised I will keep it all clean about three weeks ago, and I will.

Dozy,RockTheRed,

Keep these young men in mind. They all are all Freshmen and playing as if they have been here playing for some time. #31 T.J. Lee,#34 Artise Gauldin, #38 Allan Brown, & #6 Chandler Gayton. These Freshmen work very hard in practice, when they get an opportunity to play, they all shine. I feel bad talking about certain players, we have pleanty more on OL that is not playinng this year.

Another Freshman #90 David Gaylord DL, he haunts the opponents players. I am sure you have seen him rushing the line and chasing the individual with the ball from behind.

Spoke to some personnel at the Women BB Game today, I was told we had about 5300+ at the game. Like I said yesterday, I taught we had a great crowd, I was wrong. Would love to see a minimum of 7500 to start, anything over that will be a bonus. The #1 & 4 team lost yesterday, we should move up at least one spot if not two. Should we get a great place we could have a "BYE", and then get ready for some playoffs at home, keeping my fingers crossed.

The team practiced some razzle dazzle plays on Thursday, one was completed, the others were not in the game on Saturday, maybe this Saturday.

At no means am I overlooking ISU, I saw how they played MSU, and beat themselves. We now have the "Bulls Eye" on our backs, we can handle it. Our Defense got chewed up in the 1st half, they came back in the 2nd and did a better job. OL line seems a litle flat Saturday, the bye week spoiled us. Hope we can get a great crowd on Saturday. I will still pick our team by at least 14 points, anything over that will be a bonus. I am sure e will be cheering UM agsinst MSU on Saturday. Good night. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace p.s. Go Griz.

RTR, have to disagree with you on only one legit NFL talent on the team. His numbers are down this year, but Renard Williams has the size and talent to play in the NFL, and I know he's on at least one scout's radar.

Screaming_Eagle174,
Another young man to add to the NFL prospect should he stay healthy, is Brandon Kauffman. He is a stud. Of course I said that about many more of our players, Ecic Kimble, Erik Myers,Matt Nichols. Michael Roos is the only one I have seen make it. This is in the past 10 years since I got involved with the Eagle Athletic Association. Have a great day, and yes "IT IS GREAT TO BE AN EAGLE'. Go Eagles!!!!!Vic Wallace

Agreed. 100%.

jpittman...Stay on the board. It doesn't matter if you have your favorites, a team family member or whatever. We need new fresh opinions on this board. As a father of two players on the team, i can tell you I really get frustrated at some of the stupid, anti EWU comments about players and coach's; but at the end of the day, the most intelligent and loyal fans of EWU are on this board; whether you agree or disagree with them. We are about embark on historic accomplishments. We need your input.
