Why scheduling is so hard

So Montana takes 36 free throws to Boise State's 12 and beats the Broncos in Missoula Friday night. After the game, BSU Coach Leon Rice points to the free throw disparity and says, "That's on me for scheduling this game." The message is clear: don't expect to see a Mountain West team in Missoula again any time soon.

I remember when Idaho State beat a good Wyoming team with Fennis Dembo and Eric Lecknet back in the 1980s. After the game, Wyoming Coach Jim Brandenburg said he'd never come back to Pocatello. Rarely will Mountain West coaches agree to play in a Big Sky venue -- and if you have the audacity to beat them, never are they coming back.

Sounds familiar?? Wondered how that happened that Boise St was visiting Missoula. Thank goodness for Weber State's in-state schedule contracts with USU & BYU (at least for now)!! Don't see it as a problem, though, for USU/BYU HC's cuz both teams have win streaks going now @ the DEC!!!! NO PROBLEM winning in Ogden for them. :wall:

Astute observations. (1) It sucks that Big Sky teams can't attract worthwhile opponents to their venues, but I can't help but laugh at the teams who do who run away with their tails between their legs (your examples above included).

(2) I didn't see the Boise State vs. Montana game last night, but I have always hated free throw disparity arguments. Maybe it didn't apply to this game, but often times there's a good reason why one team shoots more free throws than the other (playing inside and drawing fouls vs a team who shoots jump shots where they're much less likely to get fouled). Maybe Boise State's coach has a formidable argument in this case--maybe he doesn't--but it makes him look weak to lose to a lesser conference's team and use excuses in retaliation. "I'm never coming back to play with you again!" Sounds like a little kid.

NAU beat Arizona State the last two times in Tempe..........and ASU doesn't schedule NAU anymore.

I'd like to congratulate Sacramento State on their Pac 12 win. Don't expect to see another game vs. the Sundevils.

Nobody (even similar mid majors) wants to travel to Flagstaff for non-conference games due to the sheer distance and the fact that NAU hoops have improved.

Scheduling is a no-win for west coast/rocky mountain region teams.

Even South Dakota State has a tougher home schedule than Weber does. They only play 4 pre-conference home games while we play 5. They play UC Santa Barbara while we play an Antelope. They play Wayne State while we play the Multnomah. They play Chadron while we play Pacific Onion. If UC Santa Barbara is willing to play SDSU on the road surely they would prefer to play Weber over that. How is it that SDSU can get Santa Barbara to travel and we can't. And don't say it is because no one wants to play the big, bad Weeb's on their court cause it just ain't true. Oh, and there is the great schedule equalizer, both South Dakota State and Weber State get to play each other at home. So Weber administration, and everyone, please stop the excuses. There will never be an adequate excuse for the travesty of pre-conference pitiables that Randy beats up on.

I predict that by the time Weber starts conference play attendance will be down to under 3000 per game. This team has a lot of talent. I know I will be reviled for speaking out against Randy, but I gotta tell it likes I see it. He is just not a very good coach. A pretty good recruiter and a below average coach. There is no way that South Dakota's talent is better than Weber's, especially not 17 points better.

Someone here was wondering why we haven't done better in recruiting with the help of Damian. Probably the better recruits can see that Randy is a marginal coach. Teams now understand everything that Randy is going to do because they've had almost ten years to watch him never change anything.

So lets just stop making feeble excuses for Randy. Face the facts. They have certainly been thrown in our faces often enough we should be able to see them by now. The man cannot coach. He is the only coach I know of to lose huge leads at half time and lose games i.e., Montana (several times) and USU last year. If other coaches can coach their team from a 20+ point deficit in the first half to victory in the second half why can't Randy ever throw on a comeback from even a 12 point deficit like tonight. He is not malleable in what he does and the other coach knows exactly how to beat him because the formula never changes because Randy doesn't change.

The recipe for failure "keep doing the same thing you have always done and expect different results"! Watching a Randy Rahe coached team play makes me wanna throw up.

My suggestion for Mr. A.D. Bovee, go to Randy's pre game talk, to his half time presentations and it won't take long for even the most clueless AD to see that what he is doing is not working. See that he is just not a very good coach. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Randy is totally clueless when it comes to instructing, adjusting and motivating his teams.

And one more thing to finish this rant. Weber could move their basketball program upward if they would just schedule up, find a better coach and push, push, push to be a higher level team. I want be satisfied with anything less. And since no one in the Weber administration seems to have much motivation to move the team to that higher level at least get enough lead out of your asses to be the best of the Big Sky. It is a major embarrassment to have such teams as SUU kick our asses, to lose 90% of the instate games against USU, BYU and Utah. We can be better than that... and if it is true that Randy really doesn't care about losing pre-conference games then get someone in here with some fire in their gut and enough pride to not let it happen almost every game every year. UGH...!!! I feel sick.

Another MW team (WY) goes down in the state of MT. Assuming they won't be back either? Why is it again that the likes of Boise and Wyoming will go to UM and MSU but not Weber?

Austin Peay @ NoCo
Bowling Green @ UND
both sound better than a 3rd team the caliber of an Antelope U

If Big Sky teams keep beating them, you won't see any MW teams play BSC teams. :-D

It's not that Weber doesn't have the money to spend, it's their refusal to spend the money.

Look at anybody else in the Big Sky, look at their schedules, they are ALL better than ours. Heck SUU got UNLV at home a few years ago. SUU!!!. Weber could get anybody they wanted to come to the Dee if they were willing to spend the money necessary.
