Why should CU fans be excited about Tad Boyle?

Hello Everyone -

Colorado fan here. Let me begin by apologizing to you for stealing your coach. I don't like it when athletic directors do this sort of thing. We did it to Air Force three years ago, now to UNC. I don't like the way Mike Bohn, the Colorado AD, operates.

My first choice for the job was Mike Dunlap. He is currently unemployed, wanted to come back to Colorado (still has a house in Denver).

A lot of us Buff fans are scratching our heads over this hire.

So I'd just like to ask: What makes Tad Boyle qualified to coach at CU? What are his strengths and weaknesses?

Areas of Importance:

1. Recruiting - how good is he?
2. Player Development - do his players improve over the course of their careers?
3. Game Day Coaching - how good are his X's and O's?
4. Relationship with his players - do his players enjoy playing for him?
5. Offensive System - what does he run?
6. Defensive System - what does he run?
7. Personality - Is he a likable guy?
8. Community Relations - Is he popular in the community/with boosters/alums, etc.?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Again, I wish we had hired Dunlap as I thought Boyle was in his hometown and should have stayed there. But it's a done deal now, so I'd just like to know if Tad Boyle can get it done at Colorado, or if he is another "Dan Hawkins?"

Regards,
UltraBuff

I don't know enough about basketball to answer most of your questions but I do know that Coach Boyle built the best college basketball program in the State of Colorado. He recruited better than CU and CSU and they were coached better. Considering the resources that UNC has at their disposal, compared to CU and CSU, that says volumes.

1. Recruiting - how good is he? Best we ever had, but that's not saying much since we have always sucked.
2. Player Development - do his players improve over the course of their careers? Yes, the group he won with last season was pretty much the same group that finished dead last in DI college basketball.
3. Game Day Coaching - how good are his X's and O's? Don't know enough to tell you.
4. Relationship with his players - do his players enjoy playing for him? Yes, they do.
5. Offensive System - what does he run?
6. Defensive System - what does he run?
7. Personality - Is he a likable guy? He was well liked by players and fans alike. He knows how to say the right things.
8. Community Relations - Is he popular in the community/with boosters/alums, etc.? This is where he was really good. He was able to get the entire Greeley community behind UNC basketball which is no easy feat. He encouraged Greeley to take ownership of the program and support them and they did. Then he left us.

You have a good coach, but I hope CU will finally play us now so we can kick your @sses.

1. yes he's very good at recruiting. However, I do credit some of his assistants for the guys we have now.
2. Player development. Very good.
3. Game day Xs and O's - good, but I questioned some, especially during the BSC tourney.
4. Relationship with players - Great job at that.
5. Offensive play - uptempo
6. Defensive play - A little to much 3-4 zone in my opinion.
7. Personality - Great Personality
8. Community Relationship - Great job at that. If you like lyres. He kept telling us how much he loved being back in Greeley. Well, we know now that it was just lip-service and he didn't care that much.

He had one good year and as the rest of the conference caught up to us we got worse as the year went on and choked in the tourney. Did he do a good job? This year yes, previous years there was improvement.

But bottom line does one good year prove anything? The jury is still out, but not my concern now...

It is odd though, he has an overall losing record and really didn't prove he could maintain success, unsure why CU was so hot to get him but we'll see.

Can we stop blasting Boyle for being a "lyre" and a "snake"? Each and every one of you on this board would take 6x the pay in a similar job if it meant having to move your family an hour away! Knock it off.
