Will Rahe Stay?

Opinion> Rahe will be considered (on short list) but likely not offered by USU. Rahe is a good coach; maybe great recruiter but not a great coach in game strategy. No doubt that Rahe's OOC record will play a factor in consideration of him with any non-BSC D1 program. Verlin may be considered also, but bet Aggies would really only desire one past coach who now is nearby at Colorado St., namely Eustachy. Otherwise, probably a new direction (unless one of Stew's current assistants is really liked).

Rahe is now in his 10th yr at Weber State? If he has more success outside of & his team blows thru the Big Sky one of these next few years...he is ripe for the picking. I think his interest in Logan, Ft Collins or Iowa (as in Northern Iowa) is definitely there. I shed no tears after McCarthy left after some 10 yrs. & can honestly say that if Rahe gets lucky & leaves for a bigger & better (arguably) place, no angst from me! He has served WSU well and he said his appreciation for a chance at Weber was with former Pres. Millner.

For those here who shame any of us who criticize or question Rahe or any coach, GET REAL!! It goes with the territory for any coach; an unliked part of the job! :yikes:

Hate to see him leave. He's done a great job here, but money, conference and a bigger stage has to be something he would consider.

I wonder how it would impact recruiting classes for next year and this years class? I think it would be tough to hold on to a couple of players. Tinkle is looking strong at Oregon State..... Couldn't blame coach for wondering if his act would work in the MWC. UNLV and New Mexico are a lot different that NAU and ISU.

Going to be an interesting two months.

10 years at a school as a head coach is a long time! Things get stale for the coach and often for the school. Rahe doesn't have a lot to achieve at Weber! He's won the conference and coach of the year..... He's probably also maxed out on compensation.

I would like for him to stay, but would give him best wishes against everyone but Weber if he left. As a parent it's always smart to move before your kids hit high school. If not USU they'll be other schools calling!

Just for the record, in regards to the talk about how IF Rahe left for USU they could double his pay, here are the total compensations Rahe and Morrill received in fiscal 2013 year (Both are highest paid employees at their respective universities)

Rahe: $382,413

Morrill: $712,697

I see him coaching in the near future at some level. With him experience as a player, I would hire him.

Once again...If I was Bovee I would be doing a few things to prepare.

1. Doing those things that could help keep Rahe at Weber.
2. Putting together a list of potential candidates if Rahe were to leave.
3. Getting a new Marketing Director. He is terrible.

My list (I said this on another thread):

Phil Beckner
Tommy Connor
Jon Judkins
Alex Jensen

This would be my top four.

Ben Howland would be great, I just don't think the Cats could get him. He turned down Oregon State.

I don't think USU would offer Rahe! They'd give the courtesy visit .... But they've seen first hand Rahe's inability to win outside of conference play...... Why would they buy into that ?
I see them knocking on the door of the Utes for an assistant.

I applaud the move of seeing their program on the decline and making a move for the future. Stew is smart and understands the rigor of being a D1 HC. Did a great job at USU, but the program is capable of a lot more.

You need to ask yourself, why wouldn't Rahe want that job! MWC puts the BSC to shame.

Why are we even worried? Rahe isn't going anywhere. USU is going to go with a totally new type of coaching system. If Stew's teams would have produced more over the past couple of years, the old coach would definitely still be on the sidelines next year. Barnes wants a new direction. Rahe, Verlin, the guy who was at Old Dominion, all Stew disciples, will not be major candidates for the job. Rahe will still be here next year and thankfully he will be. He has a very good class coming in and we have some really great recruits for 2016 that Weber might be able to steal.

I keep reading that Rahe is unable to win games outside the conference.
Let's see, in his ten years at WSU I count (leaving out the non-D1 schools)
Nevada
San Jose St (twice)
Dayton
UC Irvine (twice)
Cal Poly
Air Force
Oral Roberts (twice)
Northern Iowa
Utah State (twice)
Jacksonville St
Utah (twice)
SUU (5 times before they were in the BSC)
Utah Valley (3 times)
Drake
Seattle
Cal St Fullerton
Moorehead St
Prairie View
Long Beach St
UC Santa Barbara
UT Pan American
Cal St Bakersfield (twice)
San Francisco
Troy
Portland (twice)

Yes, the Cats have lost many OOC games in the past 10 years, but keep in mind these are often played against teams that are simply better than Weber, from much stronger conferences.

Analyzing your statement makes one wonder what's your point?? Like, gee, we overlooked that?? It doesn't take raising the bar very high to have to consider competing against stronger D1 teams & conferences outside the Big Sky. Why not bring up the down side, for example, 10 straight losses to BYU; or what most of us point to, a less than stellar OVERALL OOC win/loss record? Yes, Rahe has some quality wins outside of conference & one glorious post season CIT run. I, for one, give Coach Rahe full credit on some good coaching in those quality wins, but I also give him at least partial credit for some of those bad losses on the other side of the ledger. He was simply outcoached in some games. I agree with most of what 'Midmajor' & a few others are trying to point out in these evaluations (by USU or whoever). Look at the overall record & count up the minuses as well as the pluses! Rahe is a good coach & all should appreciate what he's done, but I guess some us are saying in his case "the (Big) Sky's the limit". :twocents:

Utah State doesn't want another Stew. There is a reason why the guy is retiring. I think Barnes told him, it is time and wanted to keep it classy. Stew 2.0, would be Randy, and that isn't what the Aggies want. The Aggies are going to go after a big name coach and hope for the best. I wouldn't doubt that they make a run at Ben Howland or maybe Tommy Connor at Utah, even then I have my doubts. Barnes is looking to the stars and hoping to hit a home run. One thing is for sure, he isn't going to get a Stew number 2 type coach. Randy is going to be here for another year at least, and personally, that isn't so bad. That is actually fantastic. I have my complaints with Rahe, but nobody is perfect and Rahe has accomplished a lot here at Weber State. I am glad he is our coach and look forward to the ensuing years that he will be leading the program.
