Winterhawks bankrupt

Winter Hawks owner defaulted on loans and declared Chapter 15 bankruptcy.

By their agreement, the WHL can suspend the operations of the Winter Hawks after 10 days, but it sounds like they are willing to see if something can be worked out.

That article is still as much as we know at this point... except for one nagging problem.

As of this weekend, there has still been no notice to season ticket holders who bought playoff packages (not to mention all the buys for the last two weekends of the regular season) as to how that situation will be treated. Refunds? Credits to next year? There's no word at all.

That could mean the whole league may hold as to next year. Preseason tournaments usually play (in Portland's case, the Winterhawks usually go to Kennewick and Everett) Labor Day weekend and the weekend prior, so the WHL can't go too far into July without making a decision.

Or that could mean we're waiting on ownership settlement... and it's been two weeks now. At least there hasn't been a worse announcement, which means something is being negotiated.
