Wisconsin vs. Montana

Hi folks, I'm a Wisconsin fan coming in peace. Talking to a few Montana fans, sounds like you guys had a pretty good season in your conference. Got one heck of a point guard from what I hear who will be D1.
We currently have some Montana fans on our board who seem pretty much in fantasy land. They claim that any starter on the Montana team would be better than a starter on the Wisconsin team and :blah: . I'd love to hear an unbiased view of Montana's weaknesses/strengths and the like. I've heard they've got a really good guard in Cherry, but haven't heard too many weaknesses as it is. Good luck with everything and hopefully see you down the road.

I'll take Montana in this one. Cherry is twice the player Taylor is. I watched the Badg play Byu, & was not overly impressed, & the coogars played like they did to end the year.

Montana's starting five is really good. Their guard line of Cherry and Jamar could be as good as any in the nation (I'm not exaggerating). Cherry is the best defender in the conference, by far. Selvig, their 7' post plays more like a guard and can shoot the three ball. Steward and Ward are good role players. Their biggest weakness may be their lack of depth. They usually only use two or three players off the bench. But as a team their real strength is their defense. Defensively, especially on the perimeter, they are very good. And they are very well coached.

I have watched Wisconsin play a few times this year and obviously seen Montana a bunch. In my honest opinion I would say Wisconsin wins 74- 62. I think Montana will be able to hang in the first half, but Wisconsin will pull away in the second have. Montana has a very good starting 5. Cherry is a beast of a point guard. I have him as second best player in the Big Sky. Jamar is a very good wing and Selvig is a tough match up because he is a center that plays like a small forward. Stewart and Ward are very good too. I really don't see Montana pulling off the upset though. Wisconsin is a big and strong team and they will wear Montana down. And one glaring weekness Montana has is lack of depth. There is a huge drop off from the starters to bench players. I mean HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They only play 6 guys really. You never know in the NCAA tournament, but if Wisconsin plays there normal game it shouldn't be very close. Just my unbaised opionion. Im still pissed Wisconsin beat us in 2003. ha ha. That was a fun game actually. :) First time I ever hung with Catcat and Bengalhater. Good times.

Should be a very good game, I think Wisconsin in a very close game comes out on top. I think in this game, UM's lack of depth will finally out do them, but they can win this game, they are good enough to make some serious noise in the dance this year.

Thanks for all the responses, really appreciate it. Do they have anyone after Selvig? It seems that they don't put anyone else out there that is that tall. It also sounds like they will switch their defenses during the game rather than come in with a set game plan on defense. I don't doubt that about Cherry, I've heard quite a bit about him. Has there been one sort of trait that the Grizzes have had trouble with (3-point shooting teams, interior offense, good defense). Just for those who don't know, Wisconsin prides themselves on playing defense and slowing the clock down. One of the reasons I'm feeling fairly confidence is that on 75% of their possessions, Wisconsin will play to the end of the shot clock. It's hard playing defense for that long and on top of that, it's deflating to have Jordan Taylor hit a three with 2 seconds left. Sounds like it will be a good game unless they get in major foul trouble or we go 2-19 on threes like we have the tendency to do at inopportune times.

Seems like when we wooped them on our floor we shot the ball well and make lots of 3's and the games we lost to them we didn't shoot well or Montana just played amazing. The second half in the conference championship game I think they would have beat Duke. I give them credit they came out after half and just drilled us. They couldn't miss and were playing great defense. They play a great zone defense so just penetrate and use your size advantage. Selvig is very good, but is not a physical player at all. Ward is an undrsized PF, but he is tough and plays bigger than he is. They really don't have much of a big guy on the bench. If those two get in foul trouble they are doomed. Their main bench player is John Stocktons nehpew and he is a guard. His some outside shots, penetrate their zone and feed those big guys of yours and Wisconsin will be fine.

Montana beats teams on the perimeter -- on both ends of the floor. Their guards are quick and physical and they take you out of your offense out high. On offense, they have four or five guys who can shoot the three, and if you extend on them, Cherry and Jamar can penetrate and dish.

They have no inside presence to speak of. Sure, Selvig if 7-feet and blocks a few shots by mere extension, but he is the definition of a "soft" big man. Steward is tough as nails and very efficient, but at 6-4, he will outsized by your bigs. Ward is a 6-9 kid who can drill the three, but doesn't really have a post-up game.

I think this will be a terrific game, and the outcome will depend on who can impose their will when it comes to style of play. Montana will overplay your passing game to death and if you don't penetrate and force them to play interior defense, you'll be watching Cherry from the rear, streaking down the court for a layup. If your guards are aggressive, both in dribble penetration and in getting the ball in the hands of your bigs on the blocks, Montana is in trouble.

As noted above the Griz have no bench, and foul trouble on Cherry or Jamar would be a huge blow for them. Should be fun, wish the game was in the evening so I could watch live, but I'll be DVRing.

Howdy yooper!! It's good to have you stop by, I'm a pretty big fan of Wisconsin. I still have my Bucky Badger from when I was a little kid. Also, I remember our games from the early 2000s. Good times!! Hard to believe that Harris is now playing in Utah for the Jazz. Anyway, with that being said, I think Bo will have your crew ready for the Grizz, but be prepared for a low scoring game and lots of defense. UM's starting five will probably play 30+ min each. They are seasoned and have great Chemistry. They know how to play and number of different defenses. This game won't be a roll over. But, they can struggle to score and I know the Badgers can bring it on defense too. One thing that makes the Grizz tough, is that any of their starting five can hit from outside. Their starting PG can big time opposing teams at any moment, but he does struggle from the field at times. Their 2 has become an all-conference player during the course of the last season and can do it all. However, what really makes them tough is their 7' who plays mostly on the arch. He can pass, shoot, and crash the boards. Finally, their 3 is athletic and can shoot it. He gets under appreciated cause of Cherry (PG) and Jamaar (Sg) but is, in my opinion a huge reason for their success. Don't be surprised by their fans. We all have a bit of a chip on our sholder, since we are from the Sky, but you'll be hard pressed to find more loyal and supportive fans. They talk big, but are fairly gracious. Could be interesting that the game is in NM. Their fans will support the Griz. Westerns... :) that's how we roll. Anyway, good luck!! Oh, always beat those puds from Ohio State.

In 2003 your Badgers and Kurt Penny beat Weber State in the 1st Rd as a 5 seed. I was at the game and not pleased with Bucky and friends.

Montana though a 13, has a shot to win. If they are hot, they can win. If they play like they did in the 2nd half an upset could happen though I am not sure if I will pick the Griz in my bracket just yet.

Where is the game taking place?

I will be pulling for Griz to win!

Thanks everyone! I'm expecting a good game at the very least!
Just for an overview of our team
Pg: Jordan Taylor is our best player. Senior leader on and off the court, he'll be the go-to player with the clock winding down nearly every time. Arguably the strongest point guard in the country (look at his arms and try and tell me otherwise), he can finish in the lane and doesn't drive as much as last year. He isn't the best defender we have on the perimeter (Gasser), but we'll see what happens.
SG: Josh Gasser is a sophomore and somebody you probably won't have to worry about. Great rebounding guard and a decent shooter/driver when he wants to be. He sometimes lack the confidence to be able to go after the basket, but typically does well when he chooses to do so. Best defender, all B10.
SF: Ryan Evans has improved the greatest out of all of the players on our team. Originally a red-shirt with very raw skills, he's extremely athletic and has been learning how to drive. He's about 6 foot 5 I believe and has a good mid-range jumper. Not the best rebounder, but getting better. Has a flat top comparable to Kid N' Play. Hasn't played basketball for a long time, but has come a long way. He's the only one on our team that I would cringe if he shot the 3.
PF: Mike Bruisewitz has completely fallen off the band wagon. We like to refer to him as somebody who will do a little bit of everything or our "glue guy". He'll rebound, dive after loose balls, and had a haircut comparable to Sideshow Bob last year http://www.thesportsbank.net/core/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bruesiwitz.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Recently he's lost all confidence in his 3-point shot and hasn't scored for a while. Don't expect him to be on the floor for a long time.
C: Jared Bergrenn is our center. About 6 foot 11 and another improved player. He plays great defense, top 2 3-point shooting threat, and will take his man off the dribble and score. We're talking Cody Zeller/John Hensen here as well.
Coming off the bench:
Rob Wilson-2 guard. He's a senior who never saw the court all that much since Sophomore year. Recently, he's been getting a lot more time and it came to fruition when he dropped 30 on Indiana :! He will also be our most aggressive penetrator and plays decent defense. Has the tendency to do dumbheaded mistakes. Has been getting a lot of Bruiser's minutes as of late
Frank Kaminsky-Center. He's a Freshman who backs up Bergerenn. He can also shoot the 3 and plays decent defense. We expect him to be pretty good by the end of his career.
Ben Brust-2 guard Sophomore. He was a huge 3-point threat at the beginning of the year, went 7 for 7 against UNLV. Defensive liability, likely you won't really see him.
And that's about it. Trademarks of Wisconsin is we play tough defense and we don't ever turn the ball over. I mean ever, that includes against North Carolina, Ohio State, you name it. We take advantage of aggressive teams and will force you to play half-court offense and we will never run it. We don't look impressive because we set the game of basketball back 40 years according to Doug Gottlieb who is a "sports journalist". We run into problems with teams that are big on interior offense, can play defense for extended periods of time without wearing down, excessively athletic/long teams (North Carolina and Michigan State), and teams that shut down the cutting lane. I expect to win, but that's why they play the game!

Welcome Yooperman! It's awesome to have you on our forum. This should be a very entertaining game indeed. Most everything has been said though. I do think if UM shoots like they did against us in the BSC championship game, you could be in for a long night. I mean, holy crap....what did they shoot...something like 75% from the arc and 60% for the game? Several of those 3's came from 25 to 28 feet. Now THAT's what I cal stretching a defense.

I am at a loss. Who should I pick in this game? Should I back the conference or should I back the "other great W" ? (side note, my highschool fight song was to the tune of "On Wisconsin" )
Tough choice here folks.

I've seen them both play quite a bit. And I think Wisconsin wins. It should be a great game though. Anything can happen, that's what I love about March madness. And no offense Yooper, but I have to pull for my fellow big sky team (even though I hate them). I will be cheering Wisconsin in the second round, I really like Bergrenn. I am really looking forward to the Taylor-Cherry match up which I think will be the most important match up of the game. Wisconsin can not afford to look past Montana
