PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State Women's Basketball team has signed two high school standouts from the state of Washington to National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Sherri Murrell announced this morning.
Set to join the Vikings for the 2009-10 season are guards Nichole Jackson of Bonney Lake, Wash., and Karley Lampman of Snohomish, Wash.
"I'm very excited about this extremely talented recruiting class," said Murrell, who is in her second year at Portland State. "I want to thank my staff, administration and team for working hard to attract such high caliber student-athletes to Portland State. Nichole and Karley fit our style of play and will be great additions to our program."
Jackson, from Auburn Riverside High School, is ranked as the 31st-best point guard in the nation by ESPN.com and has been a ESPN Hoop Gurlz columnist for the past two years. The 5-foot-8-inch Jackson has helped ARHS to two straight Washington Class 3A state titles and led the 2007 state tournament in assists per game at 3.75.
A two-time first team All-South Puget Sound League (SPSL) North honoree, Jackson played the past three years for Adam Barrett at Auburn Riverside. Jackson helped the Ravens reach as high as No. 14 in the ESPN Elite 25 national rankings during the 2007-08 season.
Jackson enters her senior season under Head Coach Ed Rosin as a three-time team captain. She has twice been named to the End of the Trail All-Tournament team hosted by Oregon City, and was the tournament MVP in 2006.
As a sophomore, Jackson led the SPSL in steals at 6.6 per game on her way to honorable mention all-league honors. Last year, she not only led the 3A State Tournament in assists, but tied the tournament single-game record for assists with 11, and broke the tournament all-games record with 28 assists.
"Nichole is a deadly triple threat player," said Murrell. "She is a prolific passer, a sharp-shooter, and can get to the rim. She is an intense competitor and was a key player in both state championships at Auburn Riverside. I love how Nic plays hard at both ends of the court."
Jackson, who chose PSU over the likes of San Diego State and Pepperdine, was labeled as "one of the top playmakers on the West Coast" by Scouts, Inc.
Lampman, a 5-foot-9-inch guard, brings an equally impressive resume to the Vikings after playing for coach Ken Roberts at Snohomish High School.
Lampman was an honorable mention All-WesCo North League selection last year after averaging 7.4 points per game, and was a first team pick as sophomore in 2006-07 after averaging 10.5 ppg.
A four-year varsity player, Lampman has helped the Panthers to three straight Washington Class 4A State Tournaments. Snohomish placed seventh in each of the past two seasons after taking second during Lampman's freshman year.
In each of the past two state tournaments, Lampman has been awarded the Snohomish Sportsmanship Award by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
Lampman played club basketball for the Columbia Cascades this past summer, and chose the Vikings over Boise State, Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara. She enters her senior season at Snohomish as a team captain.
"Karley is an athletic and physically strong forward who can shut people down on defense and her versatility enables her to score anywhere on the court," said Murrell. "Karley is a team player and I appreciate how hard she has worked to be successful in the classroom and on the court."
Both Jackson and Lampman have ties to current PSU players. Jackson played with current Viking Stephanie Egwuatu at ARHS, while Lampman played with Vikings point guard Eryn Jones on the Northwest Heat select team a few summers back.
"It's comforting going down there already knowing somebody," Lampman told the Everett Herald in reference to Jones. "I'm really looking forward to playing with her."
While the connection to Jones was a big factor in her decision, Lampman also had strong feelings about the city of Portland and the PSU team and coaching staff.
"I love the city and I love all the girls on the team, and the staff is amazing," Lampman was quoted as saying in the Everett Herald. "All the coaches are so nice."
The Vikings, who only plan to sign Jackson and Lampman, will lose three players from this year's squad. Seniors Audrey Grant, Katia Hadj-Hamou and Kelsey Kahle all will use up their eligibility.
Portland State opens its season this Friday when they host BYU at 7:05 p.m.
