Worst basketball season ever for Sac State?

I actually feel that over the past week that Stigall has become better at the point than he was at the start of the season. Marcial simply just looks lost out there and can't really score. Stigall finds a way (though not without mistakes) to try and feed the ball to Eller and Adams down low and can find Leath on the wing. That and he can chip in about 5-6 points a game, which is fine for a Big Sky PG.

Flaggs is great from the line (over 90%) but is very streaky in his FG's. He will be ok and I feel much better next year.

People keep saying that the team keeps reverting back to Jerome's game style, how is that possible with an almost entirely new uncoached by Jerome roster!!!!!? Not to mention the new coaches. This is Katz' way of play, NOT JEROME'S. If the players were never coached by Jerome and the coaching staff never worked under Jerome, how can they be reverting to what they were taught by a coach that never taught them?

Like I said, there's no excuse for the record to be like it is.

Sorry, but I'm not a believer in Katz yet, I want to be, it's just really hard at this point.

I haven't checked the schedule but I'm almost sure we haven't lost a game by less than 12 points. That means on our best night, at the end of the game, we have to hit a 3 get a stop, hit a 3 get a stop, hit a 3 get a stop, hit another 3 and get another stop just to tie. We dont have the perimeter shooting or the rebounding for that scenerio. So this season is really a wash. But looking to next year, we do have Eller and Edwards. I think Flaggs and Stigall are backups. Maybe solid backups for next year, but we won't win with them starting. The focus has to be on recruiting. Letting McGhee go was hugh. Theory being a good point guard can make other players better--which could help our current players but help recruiting as well. Coming in to next year we have 1 Sr to feature--Eller. He's solid and would be good with some good players around him, but we can't feature him. I look at our roster and I have no idea where we start. I don't mean to knock our current players because they are all capable backups, but we can't win with a roster full of backup players.

The basketball program (hell all of the athletic programs) can improve with a solution that is so obvious it stands out like an 800 pound gorilla in a room.
"...IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME..."

So until that happens, expect many more seasons like this. And as awful as everyone is claiming Jenkins to have been (I'm not defending him) he produced the most exciting athletic event to be a part of that has ever happen at Sac State. EVER. And it will be many years until anything that exciting ever comes to Sac State again. Jenkins made the most of his situation by playing an up-tempo, in-your-face style of basketball that got the blood and booze flowing and the crowd hyped. Add in a few high flying dramatic dunks with a touch of three point magic and you have yourself an evening filled with ohs and ahs. And I seem to remember a few of his recruits making it on ESPN (Pugh with the dunk competition and Bausley with a Sportscenter "Big Man on Campus" candidate). As much as many people may not want to recognize it, Jenkins was able to get Sac State some national exposure without the use of PAM cooking spray.

True That, SD. It's almost taboo to say something good about Jenkins on this site. But you're right, with no facilities it takes a gimmick to lure recruits here and he used that fast pace up and down style to get athlets. When it worked it looked good. But like everything else, there's a flip side. And that side wasn't pretty. Give the man his due. Plus, he was working on a pretty good class from what I hear when he left. Anyway that's past us, I hope Katz can get us to that next level and if he does, it won't take away from the darn good job Jenkins did.

My existing memory of Jenkins will be a coach who gave us far more than we ever got from Newmann or Coach T. The teams were God awful during my time at Sac State.

Jerome got us to a great level...and then suddenly, in the middle of the season three years ago, the wheels fell off. The last two years had a lot to do with guys with questionable academics. Don't forget, Adams the last half of last year was gone because of grades (missed the last 15 games of the year), though he has much improved. Also, a lot of guys from last year's squad that were eligible to return flunked out, not withstanding McGhee.

Jerome did a lot to move this program forward, just look at the finalists for the job.

That's it, after tonights performance, I'm done. I've been a fan far too long to watch crappy play like this year after year, the fans, students, and alumni deserve way better than the product on the court right now. This was probably one of the worst DI sporting events I've ever witnessed.

I think Katz deserves to here from fans, his email is [email protected]. Words of encouragement or expression of sympathy may help, if nothing more than to boost his confidence, he's in for a very long season/off season.

At least when Jenkins was coaching it was still exciting basketball and we were competitive. Now, it seems like every night is a sure loss. I know this is basketball and I'm well aware of the recruiting situation and players lost. But, we honestly are THE WORST team in the nation. Somewhere Jerome is smiling (at a JC in LA I hear) saying "told ya so"...

I don't see the hustle I saw at the beginning of the year anymore. We take bad shots and aparently we have a friggin play where our two guards run 15 seconds off the shot clock passing the ball to each other on our half of the court before starting. How many dang 5-second calls are we going to have this year!? get the ball in bounds!

It's sickening to watch. I hope Katz wasn't a mistake. If we go through this again next year, how can Wanless justify keeping him for the duration of the contract?

Well according to all of your blogs, it sounds like the one good thing out of all of this is that things are so bad, that they can only get better. Does this seem to be the case?

SD, it can still get worse. Players can start doing some bad off court antics and really hurt the school and program, "knock on wood."

If Katz is getting paid this season, he should give his salary back, because the university isnt getting what it's paying for! I mean seriously, we could get a volunteer coach and get the same results this season.

Please let this season end - this is unwatchable! We shouldn't point all the blame on Katz - but he does deserve a lot of it (along with Wanless, Gonzales, and our favorite coach Jenkins - what a trio!)

Let's get back to football season - can't wait for kickoff in Las Vegas!!

Please, stop the madness. I realize that this team is absolutely terrible, but come on, did you really expect anything different from a Division 1 Basketball team that was put together in three weeks and asked to learn a completely different system. I realize that some of the players left from last year's squad, but did you really want guys that pretty much gave up on Jerome last year to be on this year's squad. Remember, this is also Katz's first year as a D-1 coach. So, how about we just continue to support our team and wait to see what improvement we get next year. I personally would like to see what Coach can do with a couple of years of recruiting under his belt.

I think that Katz will get this program going in the right direction. Give him a chance before skewering him. I think it is saying something that as terrible as this team is playing, there has not been one suspension, dismissal, or kid quitting. They must be buying into the system he is trying to put in place. It is just that we don't quite have the horses to compete at this point.

By the way, this year's squad may not be good, but they have not lost a game by more than 23 points this year. Last year's squad lost 10 games by 23 points or more. 2006-2007 8 games by 23 or more points. 2005-2006 1 game by 23 or more (it was #12 UCLA). 2004-2005 4 games by 23 or more. They are not getting blown out and he put this team together in three weeks. I am sure that all of the naysayers on this board could all do a better job that Katz and have vast experience running a Division 1 basketball program, right.

All I am saying is give the guy a break. I am pretty sure the bio on Katz does not say miracle worker.

By the way, I have been following Sac State hoops since I started school there 1990. I have been through all of the terrible "D-1" we have put on the floor and seen every "D-1" coach we have had, but I truly think this guy can help the program. He will require time and patience from faithful.

Let's just keep supporting the Hornets.

Well said. Thank you.

This is abysmal...tonight's game. We were down 19-15 to the Griz and its now 35-17 with 6:35 left in the first half....[shakes his head in bewilderment]

Would love to watch the game but BigSkyTV has been trying to connect for 45 minutes now. I would also love to listen to the game, however there is no webcast, it's probably on the radio but where I am there isnt very good reception. I wish the Hornets had a deal with CSNCA (Dish channel 409) like ucd, at least then we could watch an un-scrabbled mess.

I guess it's better I dont watch though, it doesnt appear as though the team has made ANY CHANGES since the last game.

cecesdada, not to start an argument or disrespect you, but I completely disagree with you. There is no excuse for the way the team is playing, three weeks to recruit or not. Katz was hired to do one thing, WIN. He is not doing his job, I dont care how good of a teacher or mentor he is, when your 1 and infinity all that teaching really doesnt mean anything.

Give him a year or two, no way, the guy has to make some serious changes fast. I believe there was some talk before conference games started saying that Katz and the team were going to make some noise when they went into conference play, what kind of noise was that again?

I feel no disrespect from such an ill informed comments. This is not 5th grade basketball we are dealing with here. This is Division 1 basketball. I would bet if you polled the 330+ D-1 coaches, they would agree that Katz had a near impossible job on his hands this year. I am not sure if you read my whole post, but Jerome had several years to recruit and his team last year won two Division 1 games and lost 10 by 23 points or more. I think Katz deserves kudos for the way he has had this team going this year. Give the guy a freakin break. He has players that are NAIA or Division 2 skills (for the most part) and trying to compete at a D-1 level

Let me break this down for you. There are only so many Division 1 caliber players in this country, and I would bet 99 percent of the eligible ones are already committed to programs before April 10th, when Katz was hired. Let him build the program. It truly amazes me how many of you are already writing this coach off. He had three weeks to recruit essentially an entire roster.

Maybe he was overenthusiastic thinking his team would make some noise in conference, but what is he supposed to say. "My team is terrible. We will be lucky to win a game the rest of the year." Part of his job is to try to keep his team playing hard and keeping positive.

This all being said, I will start questioning him if we do not start to see some progress next year, which I am sure we will. I think it will take him 3-4 years to begin to get the program to where he wants it to go.

Remember, this is not Duke or North Carolina. This is Sac State. The shambles this program has been driven into by the previous coaches is tough to dig out of.

This is definitely not a time to jump ship. The program needs support now more than ever. We are rebuilding. If you are ready to jump ship, obviously you are not a true hornet fan.

OK, off the soapbox I jump.
