WOU game

For a first look at our third opponent, WOU plays Humboldt State on Saturday at 6:00 PM. Audio will be at http://v6.player.abacast.net/45" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Video and Stats will be at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/humboldt/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Giving this a bump just because it is depressing to talk about a bye. This is another strong test for us because we will be the hunted, we will be in the role opposite of what we've been through. No offense to WOU, but given how we played our first two games, we will be favored to win this (and win by a substantial amount). Our game last year at Hillsboro was rather odd, and did set the tone for the disappointing season. It will also be our first game at home and we have the attention of the casual Portland football fan who will be there. We will need to perform like we belong. A few years back, Montana State beat Colorado, then promptly lost to Chadron State the next week, so beating an FBS, then losing to a DII is not unprecedented, but it is unlikely. We need to take care of business this game.

I'll take it. At the same time, a little disappointed - it was a grind out game with a few highlights. We've got to get our passing game in better shape if we're going to have a chance against North Dakota. They were ready for our running game, but despite it Tago et al looked very good. And we did hold down their passing game solidly. But I'd like to see a little more balance in passing/running. We're too predictable.
How about that fake field goal!

Very much agree. Nice Defensive effort again. But we have no passing attack.

That sure was a handsome fellow on the field that answered that trivia question between the first and second quarters.

The passing game may be suffering from too many QBs on the field at once. Just a thought.

Or that the Viks changed their offense to a run heavy offense... through the first three games and much of camp Kuresa's arm and ability to stay in the pocket to make reads and make throws down field hasn't really been too impressive. The kid has wheels, and I like that we rotate him and Paris to run to make sure neither get too banged up. Their strength are their legs, it may be unfair to ask either of them to win games with their arms (that's not their game), but we have to be more efficient and at least threaten to throw. WOU actually shut us down for most of the first half because we are way too one dimensional. If WOU was giving us fits, I'm nervous about our opponents in October...

But hey at the end of the day, the Viks are 3-0! :D

Some thoughts:

- Awesome student turnout today. Those sections were packed.

- The offense struggled a bit, but think that was probably a bit of some of the new packages that were on the field. Good game to try that out. 4QBs in an offensive set may be one too many.

- Um, we just held a team to 224 total yards and zero points. Yeah, it's a DII team, but it's a college program that's trying to put points on the board. We may have a good/great defense this season.

- Kraght is fantastic lining up at any position.

- This is the year of Xavier Coleman. He will speak; we will listen. He will play; we will witness.

3-0, best start in 15 years they say. Good day to be a Viking...

Not sure if they were using this game to work on other things, or just didn't want to risk an injury, but they sure didn't get the ball to Paris much at all. That would definitely opened things up a bit. And they were obviously trying not to pour on the points in the fourth quarter. This could have easily been at least 41-0, and it would have felt a little more positive.

This must be what FBS fans think when they play FCS schools. They usually win the games, but don't go home feeling super positive. At least this win will count toward playoff eligibility.... or not

There were quite a few people in the general admission sections of the upper west sideline and the student sections, so those were good signs. Made for a little bit of a strange set up with a lot of fans crowded into a few sections with a lot of other sections completely empty.

Not sure if anyone else heard the PA announcer, but I was thrilled to hear that it appears ex-Beaver "Steven Jackson" is now a Viking and got quite a few caries in one series before being replaced by "Steven Long".
