WSU Basketball, 2014-2015

With the two commitments figured into the mix, we have addressed two of the concerns that have been expressed about next years team. Our team should be a better rebounding team with the additions of Zack and Jae, and we now have more depth at the point with Jeremy, Hayden, Chris, and possibly Jeremiah. Although, Jeremiah is more likely a wing type player. The remaining concern now is to find depth at the 3 spot, hopefully a 6'5''+ guy. Although, Jae or Kyndahl may see some action there, when needed. It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, we bring in to fill the remaining scholarship. :coffee:

Carlino... :yikes: LOOOOOOOL

I'm thinking that Hayden Hunter and Ryan Richardson will have the latitude to red-shirt now. But I do really like the additions. Jeremiah is a guy who could start, if he wouldn't have had the wrist/hand injury this past season. But I'm sure he will bring it once on campus. Should be a fun team to watch.

If Ryan returns and it looks like he is..... we don't have enough scholarships left. We are already at 13 without Ryan. I guess more moves are coming!

With Ryan we still only have 12 scholarships. Ryan signed his LOI back in Nov and has already been booked as a scholarship player. Right now (correct me if I am wrong) our scholarships go to James, Joel, Jeremy, Kyndall, Richaurd, Zack, Ryan Richardson, Hayden Hunter, Jeremiah Jefferson, Van Pelt, and the two JUCO's. That is 12, we still have one more open.

Is this accurate??

Scholarship players are ALL CAPS.
Seniors: JAMES HAJEK (C)
Juniors: JOEL BOLOMBOY (F), CHRIS GOLDEN (G), JAELYN JOHNSON-CASTON (G/F)
Sophomores: JEREMY SENGLIN (G), RICHAUD GITTENS (G), KYNDAHL HILL (F), CHRISTIAN MCDONALD (G), BRADY BORKLUND (F), J.C. Kennedy (G), Aziz Leeks (F)
Freshmen: JEREMIAH JEFFERSON (G), HAYDEN HUNTER (G), RYAN RICHARDSON (G), ZACH BRAXTON (F/C)

Is Christian McDonald on scholarship?? I know it says that on Verbal Commits, but I think that is a typo. He was a very late signee with Aziz Leeks. I'm not sure either Leeks or McDonald will be back next season. I could be wrong though.

I am about 99.9999% sure that Christian is not on scholarship.

It is possible that our walkons could return as walkons again this year. However, our coaches often find them places to land where they can get a scholarship and some playing time. It has gone both ways in the past. :coffee:

This looks right, but not sure about Brady?

Our Walkons are McDonald, Borkland, Aziz, Kennedy, and a couple of guys who are not on the roster and haven't suited up. Borkland has been injured for most of the year and I am not sure about his health status. Kennedy is on some sort of academic grant and is playing for other reasons. Aziz and McDonald could play at some lower D1 schools or be good players for DII or NAIA schools. I'm not sure what those two will do next year.

Do we see one more player sign this Spring? With one more scholarship available, do the Cats use it and go into the 2014-15 season with a full roster or do they use the final scholarship on a high school player in the Fall? Best case scenario would be if the Cats could use that last available scholarship on a one year player. A SR transfer! Let's be honest here, even if Weber signs one more this Spring, it doesn't necessarily mean that the Cats can't still sign two or three players this Fall. That tends to happen at ever program.

Personally, I would use ever available scholarship every year. Look what has happened this spring. Evidently Rahe and Co. recognized that the Cats were going to experience some growing pains next season and needed a talent upgrade and some experience after the loss of Tres, Richardson, and Berry. So, and I'm guessing on this, that the Coaches have been recruiting these JCs for the past year, and that a couple players on the team saw the writing on the wall. However, knowing Rahe, I'm sure he didn't push them out, but was totally honest and supportive of their decisions whether to move on or to stay, but probably told them that, if they stayed, there wasn't going to be a scholarship available. Things like this have to happen for the program to stay at the top, and to keep that edge over other programs. Besides, what is the harm of signing a player in the Spring? If he doesn't fit or isn't at the same level as the other players (Bradford and Williams) then he will transfer/be counseled out. However, maybe you take a chance on a player and he ends up turning into something special (Bamforth). You never know. That is why I say use all 13.

I'm really shocked that neither JUCO's had more offers. Both are coming from strong DI JUCO programs. Otero and Monroe both were ranked nationally the entire year. Getting information on JUCO's is extremely difficult, but I'm thinking more was going on behind the scenes than meets the eye. Both of these guys led their respective programs, garnered regional and district awards, and in the case of Jae national (JUCO All-American). Chris is exactly what the program needed to replace Berry. Hopefully he keeps growing and takes his game to another level. Same with Jae...he has such potential.

Final thoughts...Uh, time on the floor? I'm guessing two fresh will be red-shirting this Fall. Of course, we all thought that Gittens was going to end up Red-Shirting, and probably would have if Wheels would have stuck around, but he didn't (Gittens), and I feel ended up having a terrific freshman campaign. Anyway, as for next season...starters, mins, and any crazy breakouts?

Starters:
Senglin
Gold
Gittens
Hill
Bolomboy

Part of the Rotation:
Jefferson
Johnson-Coston
Braxton
Hajek

I wouldn't be too suprised if Gittens ended up being Weber's sixth man and coming off the bench. He brings a spark to the floor coming off the bench and could still get 20-25 mins. He is my breakout this season and I could see Hill upping his game. Personally, I think Johnson-Coston is going to be a very special player for the Cats. We all know Gold is damn good and will get his points. But Johnson-Coston is going to pleasantly surprise the Weber faithful.

I really feel that Hunter and Richardson end up Red-Shirting. If Weber signs another player this spring, I could see him being another guy coming off the bench, unless the Cats sign a Transfer who has to sit.

Joel will need to add 30-40 lbs to play the 5 in the BSC. I don't think Rahe is going to ask him to do that. Next season will be very interesting, but I think youth is going to win out. Rahe is making adjustments, but I think its more to allow him to showcase his talent.

Starting won't matter next year. It'll be more about minutes and I see 1-2 Freshman getting a lot of minutes next year. I agree we will not have a lot of experience on the floor, but this has the chance to be one of our most talented teams in a long time.

I think we are in for a pleasant surprise next season!

If you have noticed Joel has played the 5 a lot in his first two seasons at Weber. Yes, Weber will have three Centers on the roster Hajek, Van Pelt, and Braxton. Hopefully, they can play the Center spot by committee and be successful. Tal might be right though, to start the season, I really could see Joel starting at the 5. The other three each has a totally different style of play, and will bring a completely unique style of play to the floor. I'm sure by conference Joel will be back at the 4 and one of the above three will be the starter. Exciting times!!

I've said this before, but I really think that the competition for starting and playing time is going to be quite intense. I expect a couple of these freshmen to make a real strong case for starting. I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 freshmen, 2 sophs, and a junior starting. To me, the only sure bets for starting are Senglin and Bolomboy. After that, it's going to be a cat fight for minutes. I'm sure that our new signees will be right in the mix for minutes. I'm just not sure how it will all shake out. It will be a lot of fun to watch it unfold as the spring, summer, and fall progress. :thumb: :thumb:

Ryan will be back off his mission within the next two weeks. Then, the chore will be to get him back into playing shape without pushing him into any injuries. We have a good training staff to help get the job done. We all need to have a little patience with his development. Sometimes it can take a while, after a mission. He has 4 years, plenty of time to develop. :thumb: :thumb:

The biggest change would be for Bolomboy and Hill to start shooting more mid-range jumpers.
They both have the touch. Maybe 25000 practice shots each this summer would do the trick. Beats
trying to bang it in especially when double teamed down low. Also working the baseline more
will really help against the guard dominated teams in the BSC - like Otis did so well his senior
year. The talent looks very athletic for next year. Hill's playing time may go down some if he
does not show more progress but I think he will be much better about 8 games into the season.

I would love to see Hill work really hard this summer and demand starters minutes. However, he will be in direct competition with Jae at the 4 spot and Gittens at the 3. To win time at the 3, he will have to become a better ball handler and shooter. He has the potential. To win time at 4, he will need to become a more consistent rebounder and a stronger post defender. He has that potential, as well. He is going to have to put the work in, potential won't get the job done. Joel will start the year at 5, because, right now, he is the best we have at that position. However, I would love to see one or two of our centers make a case for playing time. That would make us a lot stronger in many ways.

First of June is a month away. Can't hardly wait. :coffee:

I wouldn't be surprised if Braxton is our starter at 5 by the start of conference play. I hate to say this, but he might be more skilled than Joel already. It's going to be interesting to see how he develops and If he's able to stay out of foul trouble. He only fouled out of one game his Senior year, but the speed is different in college.

I like Joel at 4 and James and Braxton anchoring us at 5!

More skilled than Joel??? Come on ... you said it all in the speed is different. Everything is different and he is going to have a lot to learn. He hasn't even played in one college game yet. Let's just send him off to the NBA right now. He is probably too good to play in college anyway.

I'm not so sure I agree with you 4'ever ...... From an offensive perspective Joel has come a long way. He's physically imposing and a great player, but not very polished. Trez was very polished by his Senior year, but did not have the physical skills of Joel!

Remember, we're talking about being a 5 and playing with your back to the hoop! I watched Braxton on a TV and he has a ton of low post moves. Joel has played more 4 than 5. I'm not sure how long it's going to take Braxton to develop at Weber, but I think Rahe has got to find a way to get both of them on the floor!
