WSU basketball alumni classic

Weber State basketball fans will have a dream fulfilled as they get the chance to see some of the greatest Wildcats ever on the court at the same time. WSU will host a Weber State Men’s Basketball Alumni Classic on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Dee Events Center. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a shooting stars contest and a 3-point contest, followed by the alumni game.

The alumni event is the idea of Weber State All-American and two-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard, who will be the feature participant of the evening. Lillard will compete in the shooting stars contest and the 3-point contest and will also serve as one of the coaches for the alumni game. He earned All-American honors in his final season at Weber State in 2011-12 and was selected as the sixth pick in the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.

“Weber State has a long history of great basketball players so I thought it would be fun to bring together a group of former Wildcats,” said Lillard. “This alumni event is going to be exciting for basketball fans and the city of Ogden.”

Among the Wildcats scheduled to compete in the game are former Big Sky MVP’s Harold Arceneaux, Davion Berry, Jermaine Boyette, Jimmy Degraffenried, Kellen McCoy and David Patten. Several other players including Lance Allred, Kyle Bullinger, Ryan Cuff, Pat Danley, John Hamilton, Nick Hansen, Darin Mahoney, Frank Otis and Nic Sparrow are also set to play, among others. The full rosters will be announced later. Former Weber State head coaches will join Lillard in coaching the teams in the game.

General admission tickets will be $5 for the event. Tickets are on sale now at the Weber State Ticket Office at the Dee Events Center. WSU students will get in free with a valid student ID. All proceeds will benefit the Weber State Men’s Basketball Scholarship fund and charity.

This will be awesome. Leave it to Dame to organize something like this. Can't count on the athletic department to come up with anything this cool.

Why wouldn't athletics bring in alumni players every year to play one of the "exhibition" games? It would be a lot more interesting, draw more fans and provide a better test for the team than the no name/no talent/glorified high school patsies who routinely come thru the Dee. Wake up Athletic Department!

What?! You don't feel that Southern Virginia University is up to snuff?

A team of Roller Derby Dolls would be tougher competition.

Dame probably looked at the schedule and thought, "man I gotta do something to make the fans happy". Too bad they just don't include it as part of the ticket package.

I'm really excited about this alumni classic. This is going to be awesome!! I wonder if Lewis Lofton or Reuben Nembhard, THE Thrill, THE SHOW, Supaman, or Stan Rose has been contacted and will be making the trip. If Reuben is coming he might as well bring his nephew along, that 4-Star guy, with him. :thumb:

This is sooooo cool. I can't wait. Isn't that also the same day as the P&W football game?

Do you honestly think that this came together right after the OOC schedule was finalized? You all consistently bash on marketing, and you make fair points sometimes. But this has been in the works for a while. It was just released yesterday after we finally worked out the details with the NBA, NBPA, and his agent on what Damian is allowed to do.

I think they should invite every past player. Many of them would not want to play, but they should be invited back to campus and given the respect that they earned. They don't need to be an all star to be invited back and told that they are remembered and appreciated. :thumb: :thumb:

Agreed! I'm sure there are a lot of players who can't really play anymore, but would love to be able to come back to the Dee or Weber and participate. If coaches came, maybe a question and answer session after the game with them? I don't know, maybe that would be too much. No matter, I love this event. Sir Velo is totally freaking out and jealous. Too bad he is in St. Joseph!!

Will, It was a joke. We all know it has been in the works for some time. I will remember how clueless you think we are when it comes time to write the check. Yes there has been some negativity here but do you blame us? Last year was a bad season, full of excuses and little accountability. In 30 years, I can't remember a time when we have had less student support. The conference tournament gets moved to Reno and supposedly our AD and President didn't vote against it. And then our wonderful schedule gets released. Sorry for being a bit snarky, it's been a rough, head scratching year.

This alumni game is awesome. I can't wait. I do hope they include some of the fan favorites and guys who didn't get off the bench much but worked hard while they were here. Bring back Dan Delveccio, Joey Haws, Anthony Jackson and Eric Ketchum.

Fair enough. I just think credit needs to be given when it's due. While Damian initiated the idea, the leg work has been done and is being done by our administrative staff. If the event turns out to be as cool as we think it'll be, please remember that.

Marketing :dead:
Credit is due for a great idea and making it a reality, yes. Marketing doesnt stop there. How embarrassing will it be when we have all these weber state greats show up to play in front of 30 people. The event is Aug 29th and we havent seen a whole lot of marketing..
Congruent with our marketing for everything else. Anyone seen anything for football which starts in a month? Ive seen USU in ogden and Byu up past brigham city welcoming everyone to utah..

I mean lets just get people there so we can continue having these types of events

yeeuh. hope i can get my purple adidas signed by Lillard when he's in town. If I can't get them signed, I really don't have a plan B for my retirement plan.

Here's the official rosters. You can vote to pick the starters here.

Well, I've been seeing these Facebook ads for the game pretty much nonstop for the past several days.

That's a great bunch of guys. I don't really care who starts. I would imagine that some will be in better shape than others. It will be good to see them all, and the ones in the stands. Too many have already passed away. They are missed. :coffee:

I picked my starters... :)

Yes, I am going to admit this, even though he has got to be in his 50s, I selected Walt Tyler as a starter.
