WSU vs Utah St.

from waht i know weber would love to, just usu doesnt want to. we played em every yr from 73 to 83 and then 2001 and none since. u think usu would want the win, since they are so weak in BCS (formerly Div 1-A). and out of all those games we only won 1 of em.

"Thanks for your e-mail and your question. We have tried in the past to
schedule Webber State but they have had no interest in playing us. We
will continue to try to schedule but we can do little if they won't
schedule us. Thanks for your interest and we are sorry that you felt it
was because we are on our high horse. Take care.

go weber!!

Randy"
This is part of an email I received from Randy Spetman who is the current athletic director at USU. I say we as WSU fans should do all we can to pressure the athletic departments of both schools to get this in-state rivalry going again.

That is too bad if that is true what Spetman said, he is a pretty cool guy, I actually just moved to the Ogden area from Logan.

I talked to Brent Guy, USU head coach, a couple times last season about playing WSU in football. He told me that he would actually love to play us or Idaho State but he can't fit in in the schedule because it is done 5+ yrs in advance. He isn't thrilled either about all the big dogs they are scheduled to play since has been there and still until i believe 2010 0r 2011.

He wanted to play us next season since they are playing at Hawaii the NCAA will allow u to schedule an extra home game (13 games). He said the only issue is it would have to be during their bye week or Dec 2nd in Logan (too cold). So it wont happen. Also he tried to play us last season but he said WSU couldn't fit the game in our schedule, too late...too bad, that would have been a good game.

Guy would love to play a 1-AA in their schedule but it might be a while...assuming he will be around for a while himself. He said the only school they wont play that is local is SUU, something to do with scholarships or something, I forget, but if they beat SUU the win wont count towards the 6 wins a 1-A team needs to qualify for a bowl game.

I strongly feel that a WSU vs. USU game played every year or every other year would do great things for both schools. Hey Bob, ask Jerry why this game hasn't been scheduled yet. I will also ask him next time I talk to him. It's better to have a very good chance at beating an in-state d1 school than it is to lose to a Cal-Poly, where most of the public couldnt care less about a Cal Poly game.

I would love to see them play again, but I can't figure out why they stopped playing in the first place. Also, is it true that Weber is playing Utah in 08 and BYU-Provo in 09?

I emailed Kyle Wittingham about it just after he finished his first season as head coach there and he said we will play in '08. I haven't heard for sure if the BYU-Provo game is official for '09...anyone?

Sounds good! I personally think USU doesn't want to chance losing to us, lol, just my personal opinion

Yes. I dont know the particulars but USU's head coach told me beating any Big Sky teams will count but SUU wont so it isn't just a 1-AA thing...there must be more to it.

SUU is considered a non-counter for bowl eligibility for D-1A (BCS) teams so no D-1A teams will schedule them. The reason they are a non-counter has to do with the number of scholarships they give out for football. All the Big Sky teams give out enough scholarships so that a win against them counts as a win for bowl eligibility.

Utah State has to play big schools away to make enough money to support their program. They have one of the lowest home attendance records of all D-1A teams. If they played Weber at Logan, they would have to pay Weber as much as CSU, Boise St. and Utah will pay Weber. It is almost as if they pay a D-1AA (FCS) team to get a win for bowl eligibility.

Also, USU could not stand a possible loss to Weber as it would really hurt their ability to recruit in state. Coach Mac has already signed Utah HS players that would have helped USU. USU is having to get most of their recruits from out of state except for in state walk-ons. Weber's recruiting class is getting better each year.

It can go either way, USU may not play you guys cause they don't want to risk a loss and hurt recruiting but another thought that PSU dealt with is they could schedule a game with you guys cause of money. What does USU do play against McNeese State(just an example) and pay up big money or play and in state school and not pay as much? Their choice could go either way.

USU has not been playing any D-1AA (FCS) teams lately as all their non-conference games have been "body bag" losses to bigger schools. No big school wants to travel to Logan, UT to play in front of 10,000. Why not play at Arkansas in front of 70,000.

USU needs the money they get playing in front of large crowds while ensuring the home team gets an easy loss.

I would like to see USU schedule Weber at Logan which should draw a nice crowd from all of northern Utah. Right now Weber is scheduled to play at Boise St. in 2007, at Utah in 2008 and at BYU-Provo in 2009.

I don't think it would hurt WSU at all to play 2 D 1-A games a year especially if one of them is USU. Plus USU needs every possible "winnable" game it can get.

I agree, it would be even better if they were both instate schools. For example BYU-Provo should be playing WSU rather than Eastern Washington and Utah should have played WSU rather than NAU. I don,t think that it makes any difference to them they just want the win but I think anytime instate schools play each other it makes the game more exciting.

I look at it as basically disrespecting wsu by playing these other 1-aa schools when there is one just to the north.

I also think BYU-Provo is disrespecting uvsc by playing div 2,3, & naia schools and they have uvsc 5minutes away and they are a div 1 (for 3 years now) basketball team and to my knowledge they haven't even played yet. they should do a home n home every year...y not?

The attendance for the 2001 WSU vs. USU fb game was well over 16,000. I think both schools could use this type of attention every year. So why can't we get this done?
