Weber, It reached to 31-4 at one point, just absolutely astonishing to watch that happen to a big school like Wyoming--regardless of what their record was last year-- that's a team that plans to win a good amount of ball games in a quietly good conference in the Mountain West.
We all knew Coach Hill was a great recruiter. But we wanted to see his ability with gameday coaching or the "X's and O's". And for tonight, he drew up a masterful game plan. Coming into the game tonight, we knew that Wyoming had the distinct height advantage, and the ability to dominate the Bears on the glass and in the paint. So what did Hill do? He ran a 2-3 zone, limiting the Coyotes starting frontcourt of M'Baye (6'9) and Thiam (6'10) to just a combined 10 points on 4-14 shooting and just 8 boards. By running the 2-3 zone, you are forcing them to shoot beyond the arc, and the Cowboys finished last in the MWC last season in three-point percentage. As a result, the Cowboys ended the night putting up 23 threes, and making just six of them. They also had nearly 15 turnovers in the first half, and that was because they would try to force passes into the paint to their big guys, and our quick, athletic defenders would knock it away.
Now, the second half was a different story, we let the boys from Laramie get back into it a little bit. Partly due to some foul trouble, but also because we started to force shots offensively--whether it was in the paint or launching unnecessary three's-- in one stretch, UNC shot a horrifying 3-for-27. And defensively, stopped boxing out a little bit, and let the Cowboys get boards and putbacks. But, it was good to see the team step up after the Cowboys were making that run that had Butler-Hancock have a little bit of an uneasy feeling.
All in all, a great win. This team is a little shorthanded with injuries to Unruh and Svihovec (I somehow spelled that right, I checked it), but they got big time minutes from all of the 8 guys who played a considerable amount of time. Up next is another early test for this team. Not only with Arizona, but Santa Clara, Valparaiso and a TBD all coming during the span of a week.
I think it's always fun when our team plays one of the "big boys" like Arizona. NO ONE believes they can win, so they have nothing to lose. Plus, it will be a bigger atmosphere, which can be nothing but a good experience for the players and coaching staff.
Sure, Arizona probably has the edge in just about every phase of this game on paper. But if we see a Northern Colorado team like the one we saw in the first half tonight--a team that has efficient offensive possessions where they work to find the open man, a team that brings the intensity on defense-- you could see a ball game. Do I think Northern Colorado has a chance to win on Sunday? Yes. Yes, I do.
