YOU CAN"T BEAT XAVIER

Hey guys, Xavier fan here just wanting to talk a little trash with you guys all in good fun of course :) If this game was played on your home court I could see Xavier losing. This is a rebuilding year for X so the fact that we are ranked a 4th seed has eXceeded everybody's expectations. Looking at who you guys beat this year and who you played I just can't help but think that Xavier just mops the floor with you guys. However, if you guys are shooting on all cylinders and force Xavier into a lot of turnovers then you have a chance. My heart says Xavier wins this one by 25 but my head says Xavier wins by 10.

Now to be serious here. If you had to pick what 4 seed you wanted to play, it would be Xavier. Xavier is not a 4 seed, they are more a 5,6 or even 7 seed. You guys got a good draw. We have a 7 footer but he is very raw. He was ranked like 47th best player in the country last year but he plays like he should have been ranked #985. He will get better of course but he will not be a factor against you guys. His name is Kenny Frease bTW.

We have two studs in Derrick Brown who has a chance to go pro this year but still has a lot to work on. Very quick and can dunk with the best of them. Can shoot the three as well.

BJ Raymond can shoot lights out from 3 or he can miss like crazy.

We have no real Point Guard. That is our weakness and in causes us to turn the ball over a lot.

We are deep. Xavier goes about 8-9 deep but it looks like you do as well.

Xavier is tall and muscular. Starting lineup is as follows.....

Derrick Brown 6'8 14 PPG Will be a first round draft pick. All around stud.
BJ Raymond 6'6 14 PPG Heart and Soul of this team. Can go for 20 on any night.
CJ Anderson 6'6 10 PPG He thinks he can drive to the basket against 5 guys and it hurts us.
Dante Jackson 6'5 6 PPG He is super fast and can shoot. He can go for 15 one night and 3 the next.
Jason Love 6'9 7 PPG He is a great rebounder and can score at will. Great hook shot.

Key Reserves

Jamel McLean 6'8 4 PPG He is a transfer from Tulsa. Great player who doesn't get enough PT.
Kenny Frease 7'0 5.5 PPG He is big but travels way too much. Great passer and rebounder
Brad Redford 6'0 5.0 PPG This kid was Mr. Michigan. Can shoot way past the NBA 3 point line.
Terrell Holloway 6'0 5.0 PPG He and Dante play the point. He is just a Freshman, nothing special yet.

A little about our program. Xavier is a very good academic school. Small enrollment of only 6k students (Grad and Undergrad) We are located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Xavier has been to 1 sweet 16 and 2 Elite 8's. This will be Xavier's 20th trip to the Big Dance. Xavier has produced NBA players such as Brian Grant who you might know if you rooted for Portland. David West who was Player of the year and is a All-Star for New Orleans. James Posey who helped Boston win the title last year and plays with New Orleans now. Tyrone HIll had a long run in the NBA as did Derrick Strong and Aaron WIlliams. Xavier has been to two Elite 8's in the past 5 years and the program continues to get better and better. Xavier has something like Twenty 20+ winning seasons in the past 25 years. Xavier's highest ranking ever was 7th which they matched again this year before losing to DUKE. We sell out all our games with 10,250K per game. Our biggest Rival is Cincinnati with Dayton being a close 2nd.

Well, I hope that helps you guys and gals a little and seriously good luck to your team. You can beat Xavier. I don't think you will but at the same time it wouldn't shock me. Xavier just isn't as good as they have been in the past.

Thanks for the information. Ton of it.

Is that true that you guys have graduated all of your men's hoops players since like the mid-80s? That is great if it's true.

Only 10k per game average? Sheesh, at least we'll get to a decent program when we cut it down to 32 teams.

Just kidding. Google 'Peter W Stott Center' and you'll see what you're dealing with. :-)

Seriously, thanks for that breakdown on the starters and reserves. Much appreciated.

Wow, that is a small gym isn't it? We actually have highschool gyms in Cincinnati that seat over 3k. Well, if you win then our big arena won't look so cool anymore ;)

Xavier does graduate all their players. I know they are one of the top programs in the country that do graduate all their players. This will not be an easy game for Xavier. If you guys get off to a hot start and take a 10 point lead right out of the gate then you can win this game. If you are leading at half then you can win this game. Xavier loses to teams that get an early lead on them. So come out hot and take a lead into half time and you will win this game.

Thanks for the great intro. We are Portland State, a 27k public university located in beautiful Portland, OR. As a young Oregon state school, we are chronically underfunded, which doesn't keep us from being the NW's rising star in many academic fields. We are also a leader in sustainability and community engagement, and our undergrads have make themselves useful in the community before we let them graduate. ;)

Sportswise...well our football program has Jerry Glanville, which hasn't brought a ton of wins so far, but a lot of fun and some stupid TV shows. We compete in Division I-AA and hate Montana. Our basketball team is dancing for the second time in school history (1st time was last year). Our gym is a sad 1,500 seats affair, but our AD is considering a nice little arena, which they will hopefully approve after a great season like this.

Hopefully some PSU fans will make it to Boise. That town hates us because we kicked their butts a couple of weeks ago.

I can't believe Jerry Glanville is still coaching that is news to the ears. I have never been to Portland but heard it's beautiful up there. A school of 27k should have a big following for basketball at least this year when they are winning. Xavier use to play in a small gym as well till they got good. So just keep winning and great things will happen.

I have a feeling that you guys will have more fans than Xavier in Boise. Xavier travels well but not when they play on the other side of the country. I would think Xavier has 500 fans there.

If you guys learn anything from this game win or lose at least you will finally know that it's pronounced Zavier and not eggs savior. I can't believe people still call them that. You don't pronounce it a Eggs erox machine or a Eggs zylphone so why can't people figure it out that it's Zavier?

Eggs-avier drives me nuts too. But then again I went to a Jesuit high school so I know better. I know some Bearcat alums and they always talk about the XU-UC rivalry and how intense that is. PSU is trying to build up a similar rivalry with our local catholic school, the University of Portland. You guys are the model! I've watched your team play on ESPN. You have some great talent. We'll be hard pressed to keep up with you guys.

Andy Katz seems to think we can beat Xavier.

"Home cookin': Portland State upset Gonzaga on the road in late December, and in this pod the Vikings should be the dominant team in their matchup against Xavier. It might not matter, but coach Ken Bone's crew should have plenty of support."

I wonder if Boise State folks will support us since we beat them earlier.

If it helps, I sorry for all of the Caddy Shack comments that we rained down on that kid Noonan. ;-)

You would think we have a large following, but the local "newspaper" the Oregonian and local TV stations has always been enamored with and centered all thir coverage on the Oregon Ducks and the Portland Trailblazers, considering PSU and all it has as the local sideshow and not much local interest.

Xavier,

You have some impressive wins, PSU also does.

If PSU gets hot from the arc they can beat you...

So yes, you can beat "Zavier"! Oh and its Weeber! not Webber!

lol

If that is a serious question, in english they are all pronounced like the a in at. However, the guy the school is named after probably pronounced it ah.

ok is it Gon zog a or gon zag a is it the zogs or the zags? Also is it spoke cane WA or is it spoke kahn WA?

Just be happy you're not facing a school from one of the lovely Northwest towns like Puyallup or Sequim.

Good luck with those names. ;-)

It is Gonzaga. They even have a guide on their website to explain how to pronounce it, like "bag" or "rag." The city's name doesn't sound like cocaine.
