Your thoughts on next year?

Yes. Pass Defense was indeed our bugaboo Achilles' Heel. Let's be honest. Heal that and we're competing just about every which way.

This is very good analysis you've brought to bear. That is why I remain optimistic about this team's future, so long as this problem is address, not denied and corrected. Barnum needs to also manage his down-series with greater attention to the odds and stop the all-or-nothing approach. You'd think he'd know by now.

Did anyone else notice that in a tweet sent out before Thanksgiving Coach Burton said he signed a three year extension? Seems like PSU is willing to give him the time to build his program with his players. Three years seems like a pretty good deal for Burton. I just hope the cupboard isn't bare after three years if he can't right the ship.

I believe in Coach NB. I believe we will see the fruition of his praiseworthy compilations and team-building accomplishments. His digging deep to grow freshmen now is a prophetic undertaking and I see a marvelous jelling transformation ahead. Look at what positives emerged and the overall upward trend of this season (every turnaround has its years of flux and adjustment). Other than the defensive secondary, did you not see growing confidence all around? I believe this year was a season of developmental "game practices." PSU will show their solid team development incrementally more in the seasons just ahead. I clearly see this program on the rise, having engaged a recursive strategy designed to reach surprising heights. Believe me, if we bide along with him and go, it will all be worth it. Q: From which Dickens' book is the above scene being portrayed? [Kudos to the AD & Staff for this decision].

I know my post maybe came off a little anti-Burton. That was not my intent. I was trying to imply (not very successfully) that Burton has a certain amount of security now. He won't feel the pressure that playing out a deal or a two year deal might have caused. Though I do have concerns that maybe if he doesn't make some serious inroads in the next two seasons, we may start losing some of those recruits we've been getting. I will say however, that based on the solid commits we seem to have, this season so far hasn't lost us much. I still believe PSU is a program on the rise and that there were enough bright spots, especially on offense, that depending on our schedule, we could get back to where we were with Kavanaugh and crew.

I still feel there is a ton of work that needs to be done on Defense, considering Burton's personal pedigree this is a little mystifying. But it's the reality, so let's see if next season brings a renewed focus there.

The other thing another poster mentioned was Barnum's play calling. I have little concern about the offense in general, especially if we sign those front line recruits that have committed it seems as though coach Davis has no trouble getting his players on board. But sometimes the little "cute" plays Barnum calls at odd times frustrate me. How many times did we have success running the ball, and on a third and 4 Barnum would call some wacky throwing play? Now we'd be 4th and 4 and we'd have to punt from our own 45 or something. I know it's fashionable to be seen as an innovator ala Chip Kelly, but when you have a Defense that struggled at times, just having DJ Adams try and gain 4 yards could have gone a long way to sustaining drives, keeping the defense off the field, maybe putting the opposing team in a worse starting position from offense.

Sometimes it seems even if you don't score every possession, having long sustained drives can demoralize the other team. I have always maintained that once you get up, you don't ever want to make the other team believe they can come back on you ala UNC.

Here's looking to the future.

I noticed that. Seemed to go under the radar.

I think that you have a really, really good point here.

Towards the end of Walsh's tenure here, I really bitched a lot about him not getting over the hump. However, there was many a games that he would get the lead and keep it with what you mentioned. He'd keep it with ground based drives that would grind both the clock and the moral of the opposition.

I've seen a couple games in the last few years where we have a nice start, but piss the game down our leg. I understand that we are a high tempo offense, but why not adapt to the situation and act accordingly. Up by two or three scores? How about a drive that uses all of the play clock and tries to grind it out on the ground?

A: Great Expectations.

We will have to resolve ourselves with this year being a developmental year. PSU can't continue to sustain We sure burned up a bunch of redshirt years desparately throwing freshmen into the games that resulted in a 3 win season. It really bothersome to me that we blew a year of Paris Penn's college eligibility on special teams.

I wouldn't feel sorry for Paris Penn. Getting a year's experience as Special Teams QB is all to the good. Burton hasn't thrown him in the trash bin; he's still a QB we likely will use. Or not. Kieren was backed up by Ramirez, someone with experience at the college level. Both looked very good - why change it? We need to worry more about the defensive secondary.

Did Penn really get into games? I don't remember seeing him play and this is from goviks.com:

"The Scout Team Player of the Year Award went to freshman quarterback Paris Penn. A top recruit from Portland's Grant High School, Penn was a redshirt in 2012, but was a top performer in game preparation as a scout team member."

I sure hope he didn't blow a year on a few special teams plays.

That must be my bad thankfully.

Keeping it on the Paris Penn discussion....I hope we can get both Paris and Kieren into games even if that means moving one from QB to another position.

On that note, I wouldn't be surprised if Kieran played some LB next season. He was a two-way player in high school, and he's built like one for sure. Penn should do fine in our system, since it seems to be a given that all Grant HS QBs need to be able to pass and run well (see: Andre Broadous).

I just love that statistically, in the Nigel Burton era, the 2012 PSU offensive team was the best. Yet, the biggest storyline is replacing our starting QB with some one he already beat out and has zero experience. Honestly DustRunner, the whole Kieran playing defense in high school argument is pretty tired and inaccurate. Usually in high school, you need your best athletes on the field at all times. If I recall correctly, wasn't Paris a stud DB in high school? And after some research, the only time Kieran played LB was before he was the starting QB at Skyview. His senior year, he lead Skyview to the Washington 4A Championship game and played zero defense. The "Linebacker at QB" headlines more talk about his body type, not his ability to play LB. That being said, I would be very surprised to see Kieran playing LB next season. I think we see him on another team before he ever plays defense at PSU. I really hope it doesn't come to that because I think he can be special.

First off let's recap Kieran's year. Kieran already beat out the exact same QBs last offseason that he will be competing with this offseason. Kieran had a great year and was even recognized as one of the top freshmen in the country. He kept us in every game but one (MSU) despite our awful defense. The team was at the top of the conference in offensive yards/game and scoring/game despite a pretty dreadful receiving core (save for Monahan) and at times questionable play calling.

So, where's the QB controversy talk coming from? Nigel himself…
Alright, here's my evidence to that statement

The whole year, Nigel endorsed Kieran as his starter. He even put the blame on the receivers not being able to make plays for his freshman QB. He performed admirably as a true freshman going on the road, playing well against UND and the UW. He also had a good game against SUU and had the game of his life against Idaho State.

That next week was a bye week, and Kieran got hurt at practice. He tore his PCL. This wasn't reported at the time, but it is now common knowledge because Trysta Krick talked about it on CSNNW prior to the EWU game. Did Kieran miss a game? No. He sacrificed himself for the team despite injury. I think that shows pretty good leadership for a true freshman. Sacrificing himself to salvage a positive season. The coaching staff, knowing about the injury, must have thought that an injured Kieran still gave them the best chance to win, or else they wouldn't have played him.

Obviously, Kieran wasn't a hundred percent for the rest of the season, but he still put us in position to win against UNC, Cal Poly, EWU, and a win against UCD. He had a stinker against MSU, and here is where I think Nigel started to created this Qb controversy.

Prior, to the EWU game, Trysta talked about how Nigel mentioned that Kieran needed to figure out the running aspect, or basically they would find some one else who could (Paris). Trysta makes note of Kieran's knee injury as well. You can't tell me that Kieran wasn't running as much because of his knee, or that the play calls had him running less because of his knee. No one was complaining about his running ability when he gained every yard against UW. He posted over 70 yards rushing against EWU that day too.

At the banquet, Paris won scout team player of the year, and the Kieran vs Paris talk started here on the forum and even Ian Ruder talked about it in his season wrap up. Then, Nigel was on KGW two Sundays ago. When asked about Kieran's awesome freshman season, Nigel could only go one sentence prior to mentioning Paris and how good Paris was.

I think Nigel is propping up Paris and pushing Paris to justify a QB change. Paris is a hell of an athlete. But, honestly other than speed, he isn't in the same zip code as Kieran. Arm strength, accuracy, vision, durability all goes to Kieran. And if Paris was that much better than Kieran, why didn't he start this year? Put them both on the field. Paris could play slot, or even outside, hell he could probably play running back, but pushing Kieran out to make way for Paris is I think a BIG mistake. Oh well, I'm preparing myself for the QB change because with how everything is playing out, it's inevitable. If the switch happens, I hope Kieran stays at PSU.

My two cents -
Having watched both Kieran & Paris all year, I have to disagree with you Horny Vike. I think, as a Viking fan, you should be excited about the prospect of a qB battle in spring. Both these guys are very talented and bring unique strengths and weaknesses. I dont think their is any conspiracy to prop up Paris. I honestly think he blew the coaches away with his maturity. He earned a shot. If he doesn't win the battle, which is far from a guarantee, I would bet he will transfer somewhere and be a very good quarterback.

The only thing I can say to that is a QB is judged by his moments. Ours had a chance at his moments like against Southern Utah but came up short, Northern AZ but only had 10 offensive points, Cal Poly but only put up 18 points and none in the fourth quarter. A defensive score kept us close in that one...etc....A 3 win QB is a QB with 3 wins. You can't keep blaming a defense that was on the field 70% of the game and actually did keep us in many of the final 7 games accept for Montana.

If you have a chance to watch the Washington Redskins you will see what the pistol shoulod look like when it is run correctly and that falls squarely on the QB's speed and his ability to read the defense,
