Zach Brown

I don't have the channel, so couldn't watch, but I saw a box score. Looks like he went 4/4 on PATs and missed his only field goal attempt. It didn't say the distance of the kick. I sure hope he gets a chance somewhere.

Zach made 4 PATs and missed 1 FG attempt.
Surprise, surprise. The East team was coached by none other than Jerry Glanville.

Portland State kicker Zach Brown puts on a low-key show at pro day

For the past four years Zach Brown has let his kicking speak for itself while he has rewritten the Portland State record book.

His approach earned him preseason All-America honors and made him a finalist for multiple national awards. Now, with just over a month left until the NFL Draft, the McNary High graduate is being discussed as one of the top kickers in the country.

But don't think the hype is going to change his approach.

"My mom follows that more than I do," he said. "At the end of the day I tell her, I've just got to kick and they're going to like it, and if they don't, we'll figure something else out."

That simple philosophy was never more evident than Tuesday at Portland State's pro day. Brown came ready with his kicking cleats, comfortable clothes and footballs, but hadn't anticipated doing anything other than kicking and getting measured.

So when the five scouts asked if he wanted to do the vertical and broad jump he didn't have any athletic shoes to compete in.

"When we went into the vertical jump test I was watching all of them and I was at the end of the list so I decided I've got to jump," he said. "I figured I could do it."

Jumping barefoot, Brown still registered a highly respectable 34" vertical. Instead of doing the broad jump barefoot, Brown borrowed teammate David Edgerson's shoes (both wear size 12) and easily landed a 9'5".

Brown skipped the 40-yard dash, the bench press, three-cone drill and the 20-yard shuttle to save his legs for his kicking demonstration.

Brown alleviated any concerns that he might not have fully recovered from a knee injury during his senior season by blasting the majority of his kicks. He boomed four kickoffs into the end zone, all with good hang time, and then took turns kicking from the left and right hash marks from increasing distances.

He missed his first kick from 25 yards out, then made his next eight kicks before missing his second from 45 yards. He made one of two from 52 and apparently impressed the scouts enough that they decided to test him from 55 yards out. His first kick bounced off the pole, off the net and off the pole again (Brown said it would have been good) and his second cleared easily.

"It was a little more than what I expected, but I'm happy," he said.

Note: Nine other Vikings took part: Justin Monahan, Ben Bowen, Aaron Kincy, Khalil Bass, Ian Sluss, Marquis Jackson, Kalua Noa, Nevin Lewis and Kyle Ritt.

Packers Sign Third Kicker, Zach Ramirez out of Portland State

The Packers have announced the signing of Zach Ramirez, a kicker out of Portland State, today.

Ramirez now joins a duo of kickers fighting incumbent veteran Mason Crosby for the job in advance of the roster being trimmed to 53 players.

During his pro day at Portland State, Ramirez sent six kickoffs went into the end zone, and was also a perfect 6-for-6 on field goal attempts, including making two from 55 yards out.

He was previously brought in during the Seahawks rookie minicamp on a trial basis this past May. Ramirez was one of the two best kickers in the Football Championship Subdivision and was 17-for-18 on field goal attempts during the 2012 season, despite missing half of the year due to a knee injury.

In the past few weeks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter had been reporting that the Packers continued to be in need of a kicker, despite the current challenge unfolding between Crosby and Tavecchio. Both kickers have experienced lapses in consistency, notably Crosby’s Family Night meltdown. Tavecchio and Crosby both took steps back in practice the previous week. Despite being deep into preseason, neither has distanced himself in competition.

“We’ll see. Never stop looking,” Thompson said, via Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. This signing is not surprising, considering Thompson’s tepid viewpoint of the current three-week battle and the team cannot justify Crosby’s contract if his issues with consistency continue into the regular season.

Last week, two veterans, notably, Rian Lindell and Dan Carpenter were taken off the market. This is a classic Ted Thompson find – a virtual unknown outside of Division I college football, with an incredible skill set, that could offer huge dividends in the Packers kicking game, and at the very least, pressure Crosby and Tavecchio to find their game with mere days until the roster cuts.

Ramirez – who legally went by the name Zachary Brown during is time with the Portland State Vikings was recruited by six schools out of high school, including Oregon and Michigan, but settled on the small school in favor of being closer to family.

Outside of Seattle, he has mostly remained off the NFL training camp radar, until now. He has an incredibly powerful leg and brings the ability to both consistently hit field goals, along with the power to send booming kicks deep into the end zone.

We discovered this video uploaded by Ramirez to YouTube which indicates the true power of his leg in practice situations. With some wind, Ramirez works up to nailing a 70-yard field goal. Things in the kicking department for the Green Bay Packers just got really interesting:

Online sources say that Tavecchio has been cut by the Packers, so it's down to Zach vs. Mason Crosby for the placekicker job.

Thunder sign Portland State's Ramirez

http://www.csnnw.com/thunder/thunder-sign-portland-states-ramirez" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Portland Thunder shored up their kicking position on Tuesday as they were assigned former Portland State Viking Zach Ramirez.

“It’s great to be able to find talent like Zach’s locally,” said Head Coach Matthew Sauk. “He’s a guy who has been getting serious looks in the NFL and obviously he had an incredible collegiate career. He should help us improve our ability to convert extra points and hit the nets more consistently on kickoffs.”

Ramirez (6-1, 205), who went by the name Zach Brown while at Portland State, was a first-team All-American kicker as a junior and was on pace to set the Big Sky record for field goals before getting injured in his senior season on a late hit after the first extra point of the season. His 64 career field goals were still enough to set the record at Portland State, where he holds 10 kicking records. Ramirez is not just accurate, but his leg packs power as well, as he accounted for six of Portland State’s 11 field goals of 50-plus yards in school history.

In order to make room for Ramirez, the Thunder have released kicker Alex Fambrough.

Ramirez and the Thunder will take the field this Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Los Angeles KISS, who are the Thunder’s main competition for the final playoff position in the National Conference.
