Silverton's Zach Gengler verbally commits to Portland State for basketball

Zach Gengler has shown a knack for piling up steals during each of his three years playing basketball for Silverton High. Now, Portland State coaches are likely hoping he will be a steal for their program.

Gengler, the lone junior selected to the Oregonian’s 2012 Class 5A First Team All-State, verbally committed to sign with the Vikings on Tuesday. The 6-foot-2 guard led Silverton to a sixth place finish in last year’s 5A tournament and was named MVP of the Mid-Willamette League.

He said his decision came down to Portland State, the University of San Diego and Pacific University.

“Staying close enough to home but not far away was a key factor,” he said. “I’ll be playing far enough away from home that I can create my own life but I’m close enough that I can have family and friends come watch me.”

Gengler already holds the Silverton school record for scoring, but coach Darren Shryock said Vikings coaches can expect him to be more than just a scorer.

“He can defend right now at the next level,” Shryock said. “He’s going to really help them.”

Gengler said he is looking forward to developing his game at Portland State, but has some more immediate business to tend to during his senior year.

“I’m definitely looking to bring a state title to my high school because there has not been one in a long, long time,” he said. “We want to end with a bang.”

Gengler cannot officially sign until the early signing period, which starts Nov. 14. NCAA rules prevent college coaches from commenting on unsigned recruits.

Looks solid, especially all the talk about how he is a good defensive player.

Also like the fact that he is a freshman! PSU will have no frosh on the roster this year, so the youth is much needed.

With four seniors on the roster this year, I imagine there will be a few more freshmen added by April. Is Gengler a guard? Looks like it.

5A boys basketball all-state: Senior guard Zach Gengler, Silverton's all-time leading scorer, nabs top honors

Silverton's Zach Gengler has what coach Darren Shryock refers to as some "old man" in his game.

"Zach's clever, he's crafty, and he knows how to use his brains as well as his athleticism," Shryock said of the Foxes' 6-foot-2 senior point guard who was named the 2012-13 Class 5A Player of the Year.

Gengler averaged a career-high 23.3 points -- the third consecutive season in which he scored more than 20 points a game -- 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.6 steals to lead the Mid-Willamette Conference-champion Foxes (23-5) to a third-place finish at the OSAA Class 5A state tournament.

A unanimous selection to the all-tournament first team, Gengler finished with a school-record 2,076 points in 108 career games for Silverton and has indicated his intent to play next season at Portland State.

"They're going to get an accomplished basketball player. I think PSU is a good spot for him and they're going to be really happy with what they get from him."

Glad it's official:

I like when the Viks sign local recruits!

This is welcome news. Apparently he has recommitted and finalized his recruitment choice. I wonder what cinched the deal for him. New assistant coaches? :thumb:

Telling: "He has a high basketball IQ. ... [H]e can handle and shoot the ball. He is very skilled with sneaky athleticism to him." What exactly is sneaky athleticism? Guess we'll find out.

What I find disturbing about our men's basketball program is the lack of development of player potential. This had better begin to change immediately in the right direction. When a great player from, say, the PIL goes to Kansas, for example, he likely will end up a fine player in the NBA. Heretofore, if he goes to PSU, he may not achieve his potential because the culture neglects his development. Look at Cataldo. There have been players who have developed themselves in spite of this neglect. Dominic Waters comes to mind.

Gengler signs to play basketball at PSU
Silverton guard was 5A player of the year

Zach Gengler could have signed to play at Portland State back in November, but he decided to wait.

With a big crowd gathered in Silverton High School’s library, the 6-2 senior guard signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Portland State.

“Everybody has their own time and right now is the time to do it, and I’m glad it’s today,” Gengler said.

The Class 5A state player of the year said he would like to play point guard, but he may move to other backcourt spots.

Portland State was in the NCAA tournament in 2008 and 2009, and that was part of the draw for Gengler.

“That’s every college athlete’s dream is to go play in the NCAA tournament,” he said. “What’s better than that? They’re in a league that they can be at the top, and if you get to the top of the league you can go to the tournament. Being in the big dance is what every person wants to do.

“I think with me and my other new teammate Kyle (Benton) is coming in and then hopefully we’re going to get better and better and get right back to it.”

Gengler had a career average of 18.6 points per game and holds 11 school records at Silverton, where the two-time Mid-Willamette Conference player of the year helped the Foxes to state placings of third, sixth and third.

“He’s the best player in school history,” said Silverton coach Darren Shryock. “I think that’s easy to say. We went to the state tournament three out of his four years. We hadn’t been to the state tournament, before he was a freshman, since 1969 I think it was, somewhere in there.

“He elevated the play of his teammates — so it wasn’t just his individual accolades, it wasn’t just his individual scoring — but he elevated the play of everyone around him. It’s a true testament.”
