PHHoenix Prep guard Kiimani Holt commits to Portland State basketball

Kiimani Holt, who this summer joined one of the newest high school basketball programs at PHHoenix Prep, has given Portland State a commitment.

"I love the environment, and the school is in the middle of downtown Portland, which gives me things to do," Holt said. "I felt wanted and welcomed, which was the biggest thing for me.

"Coach (Barret) Peery keeps things real and he has a close bond with his players. The team is like a brotherhood, and it's a very family-oriented system. Coach Peery told me that his biggest thing is he wants his team to show respect to all. For me it exemplifies professional growth and family bond."

Holt, 6-foot-4, played his first three high school seasons at Scottsdale Rancho Solano Prep, before deciding to make the move to a program that will play a schedule against national high school teams.

"Kiimani really fits the style at Portland State," said John Ortega, who worked with Holt in the Powerhouse Hoops AAU program and founded PHHoenix Prep. "Coach Peery wants to get up and down the floor and score in transition.

"Kiimani is like a freight train. Once he gets downhill, he's really hard to stop."

Holt averaged 19 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season for Rancho Solano Prep, which competes in 2A in the Arizona Interscholastic Association

He also had offers from Montana, Northern Arizona, UC Santa Barbara, Idaho State and Houston Baptist.
