Portland Scientists To Study Local Threat From Diesel Exhaust

https://www.opb.org/news/article/diesel ... epa-study/

Linda George, PSU professor of environmental science, will lead a study of the toxic effects of diesel pollution in Portland.

Researchers from Portland State University and Reed College will study local diesel exhaust emissions with the aim of identifying neighborhoods most vulnerable to the air pollutant.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $466,276 grant to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and local partners to conduct the two-year study.

The lead researcher will be Linda George, a PSU environmental science professor, working with PSU colleague Vivek Shandas, an urban planning professor and Juliane Fry, a Reed chemistry professor.

“We’ll be gathering data to create essentially a fingerprint of different types of diesel pollution,” George said in a prepared release.

Took my daughter to the campus this morning for her appointment to get her belongings out of a locker at the student rec center. It’s been closed due to pandemic, appointments are used to maintain social distance, la de da. Thus the rabbit hole trap was set for me.

A picture from 1988 of the Portland Center for Advanced Technology. PSU had just acquired it from the city (it was the Water Bureau HQ) by the time my two years had started. I had a few classes in there while semi-laboring under the delusion that I could be an Electrical Engineer.

I also went towards the Blocks and took a couple videos. Plenty of overgrowth right now. Staff were working in and out of Smith on mothballing revisions or whatever.

Still, the renovations, the improvements, the overall growth... astounding.
