Bring Back Troy

Richardson was not a serious consideration the last two hiring cycles so I'm not sure why anyone would think that he is magically one this time. If Troy is not the choice and they wanted to make and expeditious hire they would be much better off going after Osterhout. He has much more valuable HC experience compared to an ex high school HC and there's no one who has been mentioned yet who has the CA community college recruiting network that he has. And it's not close.
Jimmy Collins?

If we go from a highly touted FBS coordinator as our last HC to whiffing on our former proven HC and have to settle for someone from the JC ranks then I think we are firmly on the "or bust" path. Can't see people getting excited or staying tuned into Hornet FB if that's how it plays out.

As much as I believe and have been critical of Dr. Wood’s poorly handled public media this year, I give him a ton of credit for sitting down and answering open-ended questions for almost 50 minutes.

Discussion about the football future is at the 21:00 minute mark.

Key takeaways:

  • Takes full responsibility for football instability. 100% confident about a full schedule next year, and that Sac State will be FBS in 2026 . Had hoped to announce in November, but time delay will make it worth it.
  • Knew MB was leaving, had known for a few weeks that MB was looking at opportunities being presented to him. MB left the program in a much better situation. Interested parties reaching out to Sac State for the head football coach are of a much higher caliber than previously.
  • At the 10:23 mark, he stands by Montana's comments as a fan and alum, but could have done better as a university president. He said it was calculated to raise interest in the game and that it worked.
  • He also addressed the required student living on campus requirement, his raise, and the concerts.

As successful as his teams may be, I agree that hiring from the JC ranks does not scream “progress” or “moving forward”. Being a kinesiology teacher/football coach is a completely different world then being a D1 head coach possibly moving to FBS. I think there are often many comments on this board about finding specifically someone having Sacramento ties and I don’t know if that metric is as important as some people want it to be.

TT was a unique hire of someone with both D1 experience and Sac ties. But for the amount of times that I have seen Angus McClure and Jon Osterhout recommended, even going to post Sperbeck, it’s played out and I don’t even think worth mentioning anymore.

We've done the JC guy and the NFL position guy hires before. Hard and easy pass knowing Hornet admin can fund and execute a solid coaching hire that can be successful here. The point of a swift hire with Troy is to salvage some of the coaching staff and roster.

If Troy isn't happening, then the Hornet admin needs to take a few more weeks to recruit and hire a solid candidate with D1 quals. Maybe it gets done before the portal opens, maybe not but at least it wouldn't be a knee jerk reaction on a lesser quality candidate.

Great find, Rat. This is extremely encouraging. All I want for Christmas is a Conference and a Coach. LOL
