Bring Back Troy

Richardson was not a serious consideration the last two hiring cycles so I'm not sure why anyone would think that he is magically one this time. If Troy is not the choice and they wanted to make and expeditious hire they would be much better off going after Osterhout. He has much more valuable HC experience compared to an ex high school HC and there's no one who has been mentioned yet who has the CA community college recruiting network that he has. And it's not close.
Jimmy Collins?

If we go from a highly touted FBS coordinator as our last HC to whiffing on our former proven HC and have to settle for someone from the JC ranks then I think we are firmly on the "or bust" path. Can't see people getting excited or staying tuned into Hornet FB if that's how it plays out.

As much as I believe and have been critical of Dr. Wood’s poorly handled public media this year, I give him a ton of credit for sitting down and answering open-ended questions for almost 50 minutes.

Discussion about the football future is at the 21:00 minute mark.

Key takeaways:

  • Takes full responsibility for football instability. 100% confident about a full schedule next year, and that Sac State will be FBS in 2026 . Had hoped to announce in November, but time delay will make it worth it.
  • Knew MB was leaving, had known for a few weeks that MB was looking at opportunities being presented to him. MB left the program in a much better situation. Interested parties reaching out to Sac State for the head football coach are of a much higher caliber than previously.
  • At the 10:23 mark, he stands by Montana's comments as a fan and alum, but could have done better as a university president. He said it was calculated to raise interest in the game and that it worked.
  • He also addressed the required student living on campus requirement, his raise, and the concerts.

As successful as his teams may be, I agree that hiring from the JC ranks does not scream “progress” or “moving forward”. Being a kinesiology teacher/football coach is a completely different world then being a D1 head coach possibly moving to FBS. I think there are often many comments on this board about finding specifically someone having Sacramento ties and I don’t know if that metric is as important as some people want it to be.

TT was a unique hire of someone with both D1 experience and Sac ties. But for the amount of times that I have seen Angus McClure and Jon Osterhout recommended, even going to post Sperbeck, it’s played out and I don’t even think worth mentioning anymore.

We've done the JC guy and the NFL position guy hires before. Hard and easy pass knowing Hornet admin can fund and execute a solid coaching hire that can be successful here. The point of a swift hire with Troy is to salvage some of the coaching staff and roster.

If Troy isn't happening, then the Hornet admin needs to take a few more weeks to recruit and hire a solid candidate with D1 quals. Maybe it gets done before the portal opens, maybe not but at least it wouldn't be a knee jerk reaction on a lesser quality candidate.

Great find, Rat. This is extremely encouraging. All I want for Christmas is a Conference and a Coach. LOL

I still like Brent Vigen as a possible HC if we pull an FCS HC and give the BigSky another reason to be angry at us. But truth is that I think him and Eck were the two I would have hit up asap.
ECK is gone and Vigen might be interested if we toss big raise $$. He’s still behind my favorite in Troy Taylor.
Possible this delay is because we need CSU authorization for a new HC Football budget that requires another signature if it’s above what was budgeted for BM?

BM was already at the CSU max, he made up the rest of his salary with appearances and other comp. In a perfect world, the Admin are working with HR, Counsel, and the CSU to finalize a long-term deal with Troy Taylor that makes it extremely pricey for him to leave in the first three years.

Vigen is not coming to SAC. I honestly wouldn't want him anyways - I think his style suits MSU. Eck is never sniffing the FCS again - he's about 2 years away from getting the Wisconsin job.

I would be interested to know the list of "high caliber" applicants though. That would be fun to PRA, and definitely would never be disclosed lol.

While I would be happy with Taylor, Osterhout, or McClure (admittedly, given previous results, Taylor would be at the top of that list), I'd also like to consider (in no particular order, but admittedly highly biased on my part, I won't try to hide that):

1. Mike Canales, OC Southeastern A/G (FL). Just finished the school's first trip to the second round of the NAIA playoffs. Has had D-I interim gigs and had a hand in the development of Phillip Rivers and 49er draftee Giovanni Carmazzi.

2. John Fassel, Special Teams Coordinator, Tennessee Titans. Many years of Coordinator-level experience OAK/STL/DAL/TEN with an interim gig at STL. HC/AD at New Mexico-Highlands. If parentage means anything, Fassel is the son of the late OAK OC/NYG HC Jim Fassel.

Taylor would still top the list, I'm sure. But these should also merit consideration if Taylor declines. (I hope he doesn't.)

TT brought Skatteboo, Williams, O’Hara, Slater, etc, plus he wins. BM brought Rodney Hammond, the rest weren’t utilized. Maybe JaQuail Smith, gotta keep that kid.
Williams was a Sears carryover. Marion brough more than just Hammond, Campbell was just tabbed as an All-American and Jamar Curtis (Walter Payton Finalist) was a big get but unfortunately got hurt. I know you don't like the guy but at least give him his due wrt the talent he and his staff brought here.

Dr. Wood did well in this interview. Did a good job of walking through the process of how/why the fees were raised and going through the proper channels to get it done as well as with why/how the concerts were decided on and funded.

Anyone with a brain knew the Montucky "Panda" comments was all about driving interest for the nationally televised game. But Dr. Wood confirming what was obvious makes the entertainment from the Montucky fans chimping out even more enjoyable.

Not buying his comments on FBS though. We'll see but there would be more smoke to that fire if there was something happening.

‘Weren’t utilized’.

If we had a QB that could throw more than 5 yds, Campbell would have been a complete stud. His talent was wasted.
Curtis, who knows. He was like Carson Camp, got hurt getting off the bus.

Yeah, BM brought in talent that resulted in a 7-5 record and loss to FUCD and Poly, no playoff. He gets a cookie.

Yeah, he is a smooth talker, just like Nobama. Until something, anything happens, I am reserving my confidence in his deliverable ability.

Happy somebody is holding his feet to the fire.

Is this a serious post?

Love what Richardson does for the oline and the hammerheads, his loyalty and presence, not sure he would be the best choice for HC however. This is like AT #2 all over again.
If it’s K Rich as HC. I hope he’d recognize his own strengths & weaknesses to know that he should hire a dynamic OC. And he focus on overall leadership & quality.

When Taylor left after the 2022 season and it seemed apparent that they would promote from within, I was much more hopeful that K-Rich would land the gig over Thompson. I’m not sure how much he really wanted to be the head guy, but IMO he’d have been the better choice.

I know that not everyone here follows high school ball, but Kris was really the one at the center of the rise of Folsom’s football dynasty. Taylor was the head coach at Folsom initially in 2002, but didn’t accomplish much over 3 seasons before leaving to do color work for his Alma mater CAL.

Richardson took over at Folsom in 2005 and by 2008 that program really began to ascend. Taylor didn’t officially become co-HC with Richardson until 2012, though he did help out in an unofficial capacity much earlier — including mentoring QB’s from all over the metro area.

Point being that K-Rich was instrumental in birthing the Folsom dynasty and developing the early groundwork for their spread attack. Of course once TT was fully on board with Jake Browning in the mix — things elevated to another level.

I’ve always viewed Richardson and Taylor as a duo. They are better together than apart. But I do think K-Rich was capable of succeeding Taylor at Sac State and managing things better than Thompson did.

So to be clear, I wasn’t suggesting they hire Osterhout…I was just pointing out that he would be a better choice than Richardson.
Taylor is still in firm pursuit of the job and he’s without question the most viable candidate. I’m just hoping Wood doesn’t 🤬 it up.
For those of you on this site who think that you have some degree of influence now is the time to jump in and exercise it. I’m talking about doing it today.
