Official: SAC to the MAC

We'll have to see what the final deal is but I assume we won't receive a payout for the remainder of the current media deal which runs through 2027. As a football only member, we won't receive a full share of the media deal anyways.

If it’s only 2 seasons, that’s not the biggest deal in the world. Sharing in revenue after 2027 would be nice.

And, yes, it makes complete sense that they’d only receive a partial share.

2025 MAC Average attendance by team;

Toledo 21,199
Ohio 20,007
W. Mich. 20,194
Bowling Green 18,566
C. Mich. 16,277
E. Mich. 14,842
Buffalo 13,808
Miami 11,658
Kent State 9,875
N. Ill. 9,309
Ball State 8,968
U. Mass. 8,789
Akron 7,729

We finished 10th in FCS attendance out of 129 teams at 15,468. We were only 580 behind # 9 North Dakota State. We should do better in 2026 with all the FBS hype.

So, last seasons’s numbers, without a home game against Davis (as SD pointed out), places Sac State 6th in their new FBS conference. That’s not bad.

Some of us have always thought of this university/program as a sleeping giant. Well, time to see if that’s the case. If they can draw more fans while playing in the MAC than they did in the BSC, it should bode well for their chances in another future FBS conference facing more recognizable competition.

Wow.

Yeah, that’s a deal with the potential for heavy downside.

I’ve never been part of brokering a deal like this in my life, but color me surprised they had to pay such a high fee to gain entry into a middling FBS conference while also having to forgo revenue sharing at the same time.

I get the negatives and risks associated with the university/program, but damn… it’s likely gonna be a real challenge to succeed given the financials of this deal.

Obviously hoping it works out, but that’s quite a hole to start off their FBS future,

I would take this over remaining in JV.

Jack Dann State Hornet article:

The Hornets had games scheduled in the event that they played the upcoming season as an FCS independent, but will abandon those games in favor of the new conference schedule, with one exception.

“In all of our agreements that we had, it was noted that if we became FBS, we would be released from that contract,” Wood said. “In all those cases, that was done with the exception of Fresno State, which is a preseason game and one we absolutely plan to keep.”

I would take this over remaining in JV ranks.

I don’t disagree. This is what I’ve been hoping to see for decades. FCS is indeed JV, no matter how sensitive some people are about that reality.

I just am surprised at the cost. And am recognizing and acknowledging the realistic potential for failure. Like “program is defunct in less than 10 years” type of failure if the investment doesn’t pay off.

Here’s hoping the gamble pays off.

Based on the article, this is essentially what being FBS independent would have looked like. We pay for teams to come play us. Some other FBS teams pay us to play them.
This is a ticket into FBS with a scheduling agreement attached. The 5 year term sets us up for the round of realignment in the early '30s. No doubt we'll be angling for an nPAC invite.

We were out of options, Dr. Wood did what was needed to elevate our university at a cost deemed acceptable. I'll take this deal over the status quo of JV status.

I assume the 5 year term means no exit fee.

Wood said the program can expect to receive 1M to 1.5M for traveling to play other FBS programs in preseason. That’s 3-5x more than they were typically getting as an FCS program.

Wood also said that they are keeping the previously scheduled game against Fresno State on 9/12.

@SDHornet do you know if the existing travel fee can be renegotiated/increased now that the Hornets are FBS? Is there any past precedent anyone knows about?

I wonder if this type of unexpected status change is included into these scheduling contracts as a clause.

It’d be nice to take advantage right away, as Fresno now has another FBS opponent on their schedule.

Depends on what is all in the contract. Our future schedules are largely open and I think it was left open for this exact moment. Travel to FCS programs is now officially over so the future games at USD are gone. Maybe we keep the home game against USD but they probably want out of that game.

Not gonna lie. The details give me a bit of anxiety. But here we are. The community needs to get behind this 100%

Orr needs to get big names programs on the schedule ASAP to keep interest high and lock in fans before Davis enters the picture.

Nah, this is CA. At the end of the day, the tax payers (in this case, students) will pick up the tab. It's all monopoly money at this point so I wouldn't get worked up about the financials. The term limit tells us this was as step towards something bigger, but it's going to be a lot of work on the immediate horizon.

Pardon me if this was addressed already.
With the requirement to add at least 22 more scholarships, will there be an adjusting in sports added or dropped? I'd guess at least one women's sport will have to be added
