Official: SAC to the MAC

Pardon me if this was addressed already.
With the requirement to add at least 22 more scholarships, will there be an adjusting in sports added or dropped? I'd guess at least one women's sport will have to be added
Due to the House Settlement, it's roster limits and not scholarship count now (see link below). Nonetheless, I've heard nothing about Sac State needing to add a new sport so I assume the current women's sports can absorb the increase as the roster limits were significantly increased. Between cross country, track, gymnastics, and rowing I don't think we'll have a problem matching an additional 20ish women's roster spots for the increase in size of an FBS roster.

I was thinking over the travel costs and remembered that Hawaii was paying travel costs of other teams in order to be a football only member of the MWC. So it's not groundbreaking or outrageous as social media would have you believe.

The rest of the deal is right inline with what NDSU did to get into the MWC, minus the 5 year deal. But both sides know Sac State wants to play in a western conference, so there is an out clause. That out clause is probably the reason for the hefty price tag of the deal.

His numbers are typical nonsense.

Overall going FBS is a positive to try to elevate the entire program, just costs a lot, seems the entry fee is spread over period of time, only $6mil year one, plus NCAA $5mil.

If there are no MAC rights , maybe they held the local rights?

the travel subsidy is not ideal, but 4-5 charter flights a year isnt the worst . Just adds to the expense which is enormous anyways. Hopefully they aren’t paying hotel as well.

Overall, Wood is pushing all in with hope the city gets behind them.

Now, the stadium…
MAC has a media deal with both ESPN and CBS Sports Network. I think the way it works is if neither of the media partners pick up a home game, Sac State can shop it and keep the revenue. Personally I want as many games a possible on the linear networks.

We'll also get much more money for those P2 money games now. A few hundred grand per game at the JV level will now easily exceed $1M per game.

That's how the MWC TV deal works, but looking at the last few years of the MAC, it seems like the MAC-controlled games that aren't on ESPN networks/CBSSN end up on ESPN+: https://getsomemaction.com/news/202...asting-schedule-for-2025-football-season.aspx

Edit: It's not a great sign if Wood doesn't know that ESPN has those rights. Maybe they carve out Sac State home OOC for local TV when they do the "long form" contract (this gives CSNBB vibes)

Hornetsports release.

Now that I've had a few days and cigars to celebrate our FBS invite I'll spew a bunch of thoughts about our situation.

First and foremost this will be a massive shot in the arm for fan and media interest. With the exception of the few times he's put his foot in his mouth, Dr. Wood has manipulated the media exceptionally well over the last year and a half. I fully expect him and his staff to capitalize on this headwind and disseminate more of his agenda to the public.

Hornet admin will need to finalize the non-conference schedule and jump on a ticket sales campaign. MAC schedules were released in early March last year so we are a few weeks away from seeing a complete schedule. I'm hoping we get a regional FBS game at home but availability to fulfill that desire for the '26 season may not exist.

The rumor I heard is that the phags turned down an invite/request to apply for FB membership from the MW so the MW went with NDSU instead. Prior to our MAC invite, the phags doubled down on their commitment to JV and have now painted themselves into a corner. No doubt they will get to the FBS via the MW eventually, but whatever their initial schedule was to make themselves "FBS ready" (whatever that means) will no doubt be accelerated as their egos will not allow them to remain JV while us lowly Hornets are FBS. In the meantime, we'll need to gobble up the market share, corporate partnerships, and media attention and distance ourselves from their JV status. As an esteemed poster once put it, "davis is like a wart on the end of a finger," it's paramount that Sac State media folks push Hornet football hard to maximize our exposure and minimize any attention the phags and their JV cohorts get while they scramble around to become "FBS ready". The jealousy and envy emanating from across the Causeway will be palpable so I encourage Hornet fans to imbibe copious amounts of their angst.

People flipping out about being in the far flung MAC are not considering how far flung the BSC is. We're only talking about 4 road trips via charter. The difference in time between those trips (with the exception of Buffalo and UMass) and past trips to the BSC is not significant. Couple that with regional home games against known FBS brands and large paydays against P2 programs and the trade off will be well worth it.

From a competitive standpoint, the MAC is not a strong conference. Given the resources poured into Hornet football over the past few years, I'd say our talent level is on par with the bottom half of the MAC and maybe a few of the programs in the top half. Our recent near/stolen wins at SJSU and Nevada prove this as well as the recent win over Stanford. We'll also be able to recruit local talent dead set on playing at the FBS level. I'm not worried about being competitive in the MAC, but the Hornets will need to deliver wins to make this move successful and open up future opportunities.

The 5 year term on MAC membership confirms that this isn't the end goal for Hornet football. The MAC will give the Hornets an opportunity to build our case for an invite to one of the regional G6 conferences in the next realignment round slated for the early '30s. I don't think the Hornets need to be dominant to get a look as both the nPAC and the MW just unveiled lackluster media deals. Being located in the 20th DMA means both conferences will look to bolster their media value and we'll have something to offer, provided we aren't a complete dumpster fire. Will the nPAC look to add our market or will the MW make a blocking move and secure the entire Sacramento market (along with the phags) all to themselves? If we properly build while in the MAC, we'll have no issue landing in one of those conferences.

My biggest concern with this move involves our Hornet staff. To be clear I'm not talking about coaching, that sorts itself out on the field. Coaches who can't deliver need to be shown the door, and this applies to all sports as I believe an nPAC invite in all sports is the long term goal (see paragraph above). No, my concerns are with the department staff who will now have to step up their game and meet the demands required of the FBS level. This means actual facilities must be built. Gameday atmosphere needs to be engaging, efficient, and enjoyable. Data analytics for Hornet fans and ticket buyers must be gathered and used to optimize sales for revenue generation. Corporate donors need to be wooed and secured. Merchandise designs and sales need to be ramped up and made more readily available at Hornet events. Parking/tailgate needs to be optimized for ease of use/engagement so fans don't leave frustrated or disgusted. To be honest with you, I don't think our current staff can deliver most of those items listed above and I'm sure I left somethings out. The pressure will be on AD Orr to deliver and the leash should be short. Orr hasn't delivered any significant facilities, which is a major concern. There have been limited improvements to gameday atmosphere which also falls on Orr. Orr needs to find a new level and deliver on key items or Dr. Wood will have no choice but to make a change. This will hold true for a lot of staff currently in place. I do hope the current staff can meet the demands required of an FBS program but that will be the biggest thing to keep an eye on.

If Davis turned down an invite, they may have really messed themselves over. Who does that? No one knows what the future holds 3-5 years from now. If realignment starts to ramp up in a few years, an FCS team may not be the most desirable team on the open market. And if it's not an FCS team, the MWC does not owe Davis a courtesy invitation first.

They probably still get in, but it's a gamble.

There is no confirmation that they turned anything down. The rumor is probably due to the language in their membership agreement with the MWC, but if people actually read it, the "first consideration" clause is about the MWC being open to elevating an FCS school to "full member" status. NDSU got a football-only invite, it is not a full member, so it likely doesn't trigger the clause that would have allowed Davis to apply first. The statement they put out was likely due to people being aware of the clause and wondering if they passed on applying. They needed to say something to assuage their fans.

NDSU has a similar clause, but for the rest of their sports.

What I find hilarious is all these fans of other Big Sky/FCS teams throwing a fit and saying “no way” to the price tag of moving to FBS.

Really? It ain’t coming out of their bank account. So what’s the real objection?

It’s just a bunch of posturing. No real fan wants their team participating in the minor leagues.

I might question whether the deal they made will pan out over time, but I have absolutely no issue with the university investing $23+ million that’s not coming from me.

The backlash is absolute silly talk.

Fun fact… we’re still not the only school with a track around the field. Shoutout Buffalo and EMU!

On the Stadium note though at a quick glance it looks like some of the stadiums in this conference could be a decent blueprint for the size stadium we’re looking to build.

We were out of options, Dr. Wood did what was needed to elevate our university at a cost deemed acceptable. I'll take this deal over the status quo of JV status.

I assume the 5 year term means no exit fee.
My guess also is given the NCAA lawsuit that had aleady occurred a few years back had a much higher outlay than what we had to put out for the MAC, which is why all that talk stopped abruptly. Hence the pivot to full court press with the MAC. I am glad to see it, I think Dr Wood steps on the accelerator with businesses ,etc to step up.

Now time for Orr and Dr. Wood to bring in all these millions for stadium upgrades, concurrently the new stadium, NIL, $6M entry fee, and a couple mill for teams flying in (and boarding).

Wood keeps saying that the entrance fee will be paid by taking P4 paycheck games. I guess we'll have to see how many they're actually able to schedule. Guessing they won't have one in 2026 since there isn't enough time and those types of opponents already have their OOC set.

“None of this is being paid by student fees, tuition or by the general fund,” Wood said. “All of this is being primarily paid for by game guarantees. As an FBS school, we can get $1 million to $1.5 million per game. Sam Houston was paid $1.5 million to go play Oregon State and beat them at home.”

With game guarantees and major increases to game revenue, Wood put it simply: “Football is paying for football.”

He needs to drop the whole "football is paying for football" bit though, since it isn't true now and won't be in the future either. They aren't going to be generating enough revenue to do so. Very few programs across CFB are self-sustaining. It's a weird hill to die on.

Not getting why people are getting worked up on the financials. This is Dr. Wood the politician talking. Similar to how politicians roll out an economic projection to validate their stance/policy, this is no different. Sac State is a state institution, and like all state institutions and their projects the taxpayers (in this case, students) will pick up the tab.

No, they won't. If this were true SDSU and Fresno wouldn't be worrying about their MWC exit fees and in Fresno's case trying to get a tax measure approved to pay for stadium renovations.

Plus, Wood just raised student fees to pay for part of the stadium project. He can't do it again.
