#2 EWU at SUU Game Thread

Yep, it really was. I thought a lot of guys stepped up on both sides of the ball. West played just fine.

Game balls - Jalen Moore on Offense, Victor Gamboa on D.

Now let's get some guys healthy, good grief!

That was a nice win on the road which is never easy and especially breaking in a new starting QB. As critical as I have been of our D, I thought they played pretty well today. FYI, Sac State and UNC is on Big Sky Tv feed right now.

To All,
We are so used to seeing Kupp, Bourne, Hill, Balmer making one handed catches. Nic Sblendorio is coming into his own. This team is very dangerous with the Wide Receivers we have. The "D" did play better today. I Have said before our "D" is alright going side to side, but if someone gets behind us, we will not catch them. We don't have the speed to run down anyone. Jordan West is going to be tough, he is coming into his own. Next week he will be even better. This team WR practice catching the balls with one hand, so it is not a surprise when they does it. Team is supposed to be back between 7:30 pm & 8:00 p.m. tonight. Will be there to greet them home. See many of you next Saturday. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

We laid down a whooping when we were supposed to. JW can and should get us through the next 2 games, and even Montana if needed.

Good game. Defense was better, West was awesome in his first start and it was nice to see that the Eagles can pound their way to a victory on the ground if they need to. It's been awhile since they've had to do that, and it wasn't all that long ago that they weren't capable of doing it.

Southern Utah was just Gawd-forsaken awful. They'd be oh-fer in the Big Sky about 50% of the time. The good news for them was that there are four or five really awful teams in the conference last year. I didn't think Idaho State was better than mediocre and they could legitimately be among the top 5 this season.

It's scary that we still gave up 500+ yards to this team, because not only were they seriously devoid of talent, but they were completely one-dimensional on offense. At least the D managed to buckle down a couple of times after giving up long drives and snag a couple of INTs.

All in all, a fairly pedestrian effort. Not sure what to make of the conference this season; there are a lot of patsies. I watched the Sac State / UNC game afterwards and both of those teams are totally rotten as well. I'm not so sure it's good for the future of the conference that Eastern, Montana, and Montana State continue to separate from the rest of the teams.

Fair points, SUU is not a good team this year. Still, considering the circumstances, I think it was better than a pedestrial effort. Moderately healthy, we blow that team out, but we were without 20 players going into this game, 18 due to injuries or sickness, and two due to suspension.

I'm glad that we're playing a stretch of not very good teams right now. Hopefully, we get a fair amount of guys back later on in the season right when we're really going to need them. It will be tough to stay unbeaten up until the Montana game, but I think we can do it.

OK, I'll give you that. Eastern did some good things, but they gave up a lot of yards to a team that has been held to less than 20 points in four of their previous 6. A road win is always nice, and they managed to separate in the second half, which was nice. But man, I couldn't get over how poor Southern Utah was. Their QBs were decent, but nothing to work with anywhere else on the field.

Impressed with our running game and how poised West was. Sat next to his parents at the game and as you could imagine they were pretty proud and excited.

On another note, the defense: I believe our biggest problem is we don't have an identity, we go from a 4-3 to 3-4 to 3-3-5 in the same drive. We will shuffle 3-5 players on and off at a time. If you notice the players are always a step behind and I think that's because they are thinking to much, they need to read and react but with all the different formations and different styles we are playing we don't. We need to stick to one style and I think it should be a 4-3. Another issue is the lack of speed by our linebackers, Havili just doesn't have the speed to play at this level but I think he could make one hell of a d-end. It would give us a second pass rusher which we need since it doesn't look like Day is coming back this year. I would also like them to move one of the safety's to olb to help with the lack of speed at that position. We don't need to be great at D but we can't keep giving up 400+ yards to a bad offense every week. As is I think we will win out in the Big Sky but we will lose in the playoffs if corrections aren't made and we all want a National Championship at the end of the season.

Also wanted to point out the leadership from Vernon, after each change of possession when the players sat with their position coaches VA went to each group, smacked each players shoulder pads and said something to them. He did this to both the offensive and defensive groups. Also saw him put his arm around Wadood after he got scored on say something to him for a few seconds. We are lucky to have such an amazing player at Eastern.

God Bless and Go EAGS

Nice to meet you today, damn those were good ribs! (probably not as good as Vic's though) ;) If anyone gets to Cedar City, don't miss Sonny Boys BBQ.
In addition to Vernon doing what he could for the team, I was also impressed with the leadership demonstrated by Jordan. Seems like everyt ime I looked to the sideline he was thanking an offensive player. I understand several of the players had flu, strep throat, and a little elevation sickness. As was mentioned earlier quite a few starters did not play. Given all of the adversity I think it was a solid win over a pretty good SUU team.

Clawman it was great meeting you and Talon today. The pulled pork was fantastic as well! Look forward to see you in Flagstaff in a few weeks! Have a safe trip back to spokane! Go EAGS!

That injury list was unbelievable! Surviving 2 more games should help us get close. We stomped a very mediocre team with a combination
a) injured starters
b) #2 ' s

That is great news! This only increases our depth going forward and allows us to have more experienced back ups rotating in knowing they are more than capable, and they can be confident in themselves.

I remember just a few weeks ago when everyone was clamoring for schematic change.

In regards to rotation, it seems like most teams at both the college and pro level are platooning at d-line. This might have something to do with the speed that offenses are playing at.

I caught the end of the Baylor-TCU game last night. This was the #8 and #5 FBS teams and they gave up 58 and 61 points respectively. I'd hate to be a DC in this day and age.

There's no question we need to improve defensively, keeping teams under 30 ppg, and less than 400 ypg. But keep in mind that in their 3 previous games, SUU gained 375, 360, and 504 yards and scored 16, 31, and 39 points against decent defenses, including Fresno State. They are already light years ahead of where they were offensively last year.

Also keep in mind that very few teams, if any are going to slow down Washington, MSU, and ISU. We had a perfect storm of injuries and playing some really good offenses. These young kids will continue to grow and will be battle hardened come the playoffs.
