The good news for them was that there are four or five really awful teams in the conference last year. I didn't think Idaho State was better than mediocre and they could legitimately be among the top 5 this season.
It's scary that we still gave up 500+ yards to this team, because not only were they seriously devoid of talent, but they were completely one-dimensional on offense. At least the D managed to buckle down a couple of times after giving up long drives and snag a couple of INTs.
All in all, a fairly pedestrian effort. Not sure what to make of the conference this season; there are a lot of patsies. I watched the Sac State / UNC game afterwards and both of those teams are totally rotten as well. I'm not so sure it's good for the future of the conference that Eastern, Montana, and Montana State continue to separate from the rest of the teams.

Fair points, SUU is not a good team this year. Still, considering the circumstances, I think it was better than a pedestrial effort. Moderately healthy, we blow that team out, but we were without 20 players going into this game, 18 due to injuries or sickness, and two due to suspension.
I'm glad that we're playing a stretch of not very good teams right now. Hopefully, we get a fair amount of guys back later on in the season right when we're really going to need them. It will be tough to stay unbeaten up until the Montana game, but I think we can do it.

On another note, the defense: I believe our biggest problem is we don't have an identity, we go from a 4-3 to 3-4 to 3-3-5 in the same drive. We will shuffle 3-5 players on and off at a time. If you notice the players are always a step behind and I think that's because they are thinking to much, they need to read and react but with all the different formations and different styles we are playing we don't. We need to stick to one style and I think it should be a 4-3. Another issue is the lack of speed by our linebackers, Havili just doesn't have the speed to play at this level but I think he could make one hell of a d-end. It would give us a second pass rusher which we need since it doesn't look like Day is coming back this year. I would also like them to move one of the safety's to olb to help with the lack of speed at that position. We don't need to be great at D but we can't keep giving up 400+ yards to a bad offense every week. As is I think we will win out in the Big Sky but we will lose in the playoffs if corrections aren't made and we all want a National Championship at the end of the season.
Also wanted to point out the leadership from Vernon, after each change of possession when the players sat with their position coaches VA went to each group, smacked each players shoulder pads and said something to them. He did this to both the offensive and defensive groups. Also saw him put his arm around Wadood after he got scored on say something to him for a few seconds. We are lucky to have such an amazing player at Eastern.
Go EAGS
Violation of team rules. What that was exactly, I don't know.EdubU10 said:Any idea why Shaq didn't play?

I remember just a few weeks ago when everyone was clamoring for schematic change.
In regards to rotation, it seems like most teams at both the college and pro level are platooning at d-line. This might have something to do with the speed that offenses are playing at.
I caught the end of the Baylor-TCU game last night. This was the #8 and #5 FBS teams and they gave up 58 and 61 points respectively. I'd hate to be a DC in this day and age.
There's no question we need to improve defensively, keeping teams under 30 ppg, and less than 400 ypg. But keep in mind that in their 3 previous games, SUU gained 375, 360, and 504 yards and scored 16, 31, and 39 points against decent defenses, including Fresno State. They are already light years ahead of where they were offensively last year.
Also keep in mind that very few teams, if any are going to slow down Washington, MSU, and ISU. We had a perfect storm of injuries and playing some really good offenses. These young kids will continue to grow and will be battle hardened come the playoffs.
