On another note, the defense: I believe our biggest problem is we don't have an identity, we go from a 4-3 to 3-4 to 3-3-5 in the same drive. We will shuffle 3-5 players on and off at a time. If you notice the players are always a step behind and I think that's because they are thinking to much, they need to read and react but with all the different formations and different styles we are playing we don't. We need to stick to one style and I think it should be a 4-3. Another issue is the lack of speed by our linebackers, Havili just doesn't have the speed to play at this level but I think he could make one hell of a d-end. It would give us a second pass rusher which we need since it doesn't look like Day is coming back this year. I would also like them to move one of the safety's to olb to help with the lack of speed at that position. We don't need to be great at D but we can't keep giving up 400+ yards to a bad offense every week. As is I think we will win out in the Big Sky but we will lose in the playoffs if corrections aren't made and we all want a National Championship at the end of the season.
Also wanted to point out the leadership from Vernon, after each change of possession when the players sat with their position coaches VA went to each group, smacked each players shoulder pads and said something to them. He did this to both the offensive and defensive groups. Also saw him put his arm around Wadood after he got scored on say something to him for a few seconds. We are lucky to have such an amazing player at Eastern.
God Bless and Go EAGS
I'm not a big fan on using a base nickel, but given that Southern Utah was almost an exclusively pass-oriented offense, it made sense for that game. I like the 4-3 for us; I think it best fits our personnel. I am not a fan of how many players we sub in on a given drive either; it's not like these kids aren't in good enough shape to play 5 or 6 plays in a row. If we've got our starters largely healthy, but missing a number from the two deep, I think it makes more sense to wear the kids down with plays than allow a mismatch by bringing in a guy from deep down the depth chart.
But it is what it is, as long as we keep winning. I suspect a lot of these ticky-tack injuries go away once it gets to crunch time.
