2008-09 season

This is obviously a jab to get conversation going. 6-8? Come on. If you haven't seen Jones or Nelson play, your statement just makes you look arrogant. Do you really think WSU is significantly better than PSU?

I think he's (or she's) quite serious. He/she said "non conference." That's a fair comment, I think.
It all depends on the strength of your non-conference schedule, does it not?

I'll take a stab at a rundown for our non-conference schedule....

Rice: Win. Rice will be better, but improving on a 3-27 record isn't too hard.

UP: Probable win. UP is improved, but they are young. A packed Stott Center will help out for a Viking victory.

CSF: Could go either way. PSU will want payback for the late season shelling that Fullerton gave them last year in the bracket buster game.

NIU: Loss. Not a real strong MAC team, but they do have the conference frosh of the year coming back.

Games 2/3 of the Great Alaska Shootout: 1-1

Seattle: Win.

Lewis & Clark. Win. PSU will remember the near disaster of last year and hammer L&C.

Washington: Loss. Hopefully it doesn't get ugly as it usually does in the 2nd half.

Cal Poly: Loss. Tough road game.

Gonzaga: Loss. We typically play them tough for about 1/2 of the game.

Texas Southern: Win. Unless we struggle with this game since it's so far away, we should roll out of there with a win.

Baylor: Loss. I'm hoping that we compete against this quality Big 12 team on the road.

ESPN Bracket Buster: I'll go with a win. ;-) We actually play quite well at the Stott, so hopefully we can get a late non-conference season win.

So I have 8-6 in non-conference play. Lot of unknowns like unknown tourney opponents and the bracket buster. Also, how will this team play on the road? Injuries? Depth at the 5 spot? Rebounding? That being said, I don't see us being sub .500 in non conference play...

I think you can only assume 4 losses (UW, Gonzaga, Baylor, and SDSU if they play) if Nelson and Jones play the way they should. Every other one on the schedule should be winnable. The might lose one or two of the others, but should have just as much talent and experience as all of those teams.

UP looks like a much more difficult task given their win against Washington. Maybe there's something to letting Brockman do all the damage he can, and trying to shut down everyone else.

I watched most of the 2nd half of the UP/UW game, and I think we can beat both teams.

UW didn't have anybody that looked threatening other than Brockman (who is a beast). I think we're faster and more athletic, it will just be a matter of getting shots to drop and we could pull out a W in Seattle.

UP looked about the same this year as last, with slight improvement at all positions. With our athleticism and quickness, we should be able to take them. They've got decent players at all positions, but no real "star" of the team.

Without a big man the Viking's season will be good but not great

I've been trying not to think about this. If anything, this is why I've been advocating a JD-Waters-Murray lineup. If we're inevitably going to be small, we might as well keep as our best smalls on the floor together as much as possible.

I know nothing's guaranteed, but a tournament bid in Portland seems like a good outcome for the Viks. At least it would guarantee that some Viking fans might actually show up. Would you guys prefer the 14 seed that might match up with Arizona State, or the 15 with UCLA?

ASU or UCLA. That's like asking if you'd like the firing squad or to be beheaded. ;-) I've seen a bit of both teams this year, both are super athletic.

Wow. The remote possibility of PSU in the tourney in Portland. I realize that the stars would really have to align, but if you were to tell me seven years ago that there was a chance of something like that, I'd say no way.

Given the way that the local media got on board with PSU for the tourney run last year, I have a feeling it would be a packed house rooting for the green and white.

I brought this up in another thread, wondering if PSU could play in Portland because Oregon is technically the host school. I'd rather play ASU because from what I've seen, UCLA plays better defense. I'd take my chances with our guards in a three point shooting contest against McMillan, Harden, and whoever else gets backcourt minutes for ASU.
