Gertson Gets Offer from PSU!
Westview's Warrior in the Trenches nets Offer for Backfield Job!
David Gertson is an unassuming kid when you meet him. Quiet at first but if you get to know him a little he will tell you his story with a smile. He passes the look test for sure. "Whoa&hellipwho's that kid?" I heard a fan say Friday night as the Cats walked out onto Wildcat Stadium to play Sunset.
Like many of his team mates Gertson never attended Combines and Summer Camps. He never did anything to promote himself. Mainly because when he is not playing football he is working. I caught up to him Sunday at 9Pm after he got off work.
Gertson was a First Team All Metro Selection at Defensive Tackle last season as a
Junior. This season he is a shoe in First Teamer and in most people's eyes the #1 DT in the State of Oregon. At 6'1" and 285 pounds he has perfect size and strength or that brutal position.
The path David has walked to get to this place is an interesting one to say the least. He is Panamanian by birth and did not move to the US until 6 th Grade. "I was a Soccer Player when I got here. Than in 9th grade they said that Football was probably a good sport for me." said Gertson.
David excelled at Roseburg HS&hellipso much so that he was moved up to the Varsity his sophomore year. He started all season that year at Defensive Tackle. Than in his Junior Year his family moved north. He landed at Westview where he was able to fill the Shoes or graduated All State Defensive Tackle Paul Nishizaki. For the past two seasons Gertson and fellow DT standout Eric Perry have anchored the stingy Wildcat front defense for the playoff bound Wildcats.
Gertson is very strong. He generates a lot of force on the field. His 40 has been clocked recently at 5.0, he squats 500, and dead lifts 750 pounds. He can throw 185 around like it is nothing. So we certainly expect interest from schools for this fine DT. But here is where the story gets interesting.
Friday night as he prepared for the game a call came into Westview and David was offered a scholarship to Portland State University&hellip..as a Full Back! Only Mouse Davis and Jerry Glanville would pull such a move. Anyone that has watched Hawaii in the past few years has seen them use a big back as a battering Ram to force teams to respect the middle as they spread the ball all over.
"I am honored to have this offer from PSU and I am really excited to have a chance to carry the ball. They will want me to trim some weight and up my speed and agility. I am planning to work super hard in the off season and get ready for this." David said.
"I visited PSU and saw the school and facility. I think this can be a great fit for me. Basically I will play wherever I am needed." He added. Portland State is his #1 right now. He has a box of letters from other schools but only noted OSU and the Washington Huskies as being other teams he would consider at this time.
I finished by asking him about his team, the Westview Wildcats.
"We are having a great year. We have this thing called UCATS and all summer and all year have been growing closer as a team. We have a lot of pride and I think the best defense period. For me I have learned to push myself thanks to all my coaches. My D-line coach Mike Dellerba has taught me to never take plays off. I expect the best from myself every play." Gertson offered.
The Cats are playoff bound and in a scene right out of Friday Night Lights ended in a 3 way tie for first place in the powerful Metro League. The head coaches of Jesuit, Southridge, and Westview High Schools met in a tavern just before midnight this past Friday to flip a coin to determine the seeding. The Wildcats won the toss, Southridge taking second and Jesuit Third upsetting the brackets everybody thought they had down.
"We can beat anybody. Playing in the Metro league makes us believe that. Southridge and Jesuit and Beaverton&hellipus too. We can all win this thing! My team and I are grateful we have this level of competition here. It makes us tougher." David added.
As the Playoffs arrive Friday many questions will be answered. Granted this is a one week at a time proposition and the only down that matters is the one you are on at that moment in time.
The PSU Offer is what is best about football. Creative coaches looking right here at home for the players they need to succeed. Having played some Tight End this year David Gertson has scored once on a pass play.
"That was a great feeling. I'm excited to do that again"
Congrats to David Gertson on the offer he received form Portland State University and to the Westview Wildcat football team on Wining the Metro league title this season. Good luck in the playoffs Cats!
