2008 Recruiting Thread

What happened to Colton Russi, a LB from Colfax hs in Cali.? I thought he had made a verbal commit, but I don't see anything on the regular sites about it.

Considering: No schools at this time. What does that mean? I don't think espn's site is very accurate. Thanks for help though. Russi looks like a keeper, if we can get him!

Glanville is doing awesome with commits. Huge lineman Dalton Jasso from Lakewood has committed and so has a monster lineman namend 'Manuel" (not sure of first name) from the LA area as well. Gerston is in from Westview on the D-line and Nick Kaplin the NorCal offensive player of the year from Los Gatos california is also a committ at running back. Don't worry, Russi is totally commited and so has Rau, both linebackers.

Glanville told this entire group of freshman recruits last weekend that he is recruiting a 1-AA nationall championship class. Feb 6th is going to be sweet! Some other studs are so very close to saying yes as well, posibly Jordan Bishop from salem. Look also for a last year freshman full ride Universtiy of Miami Hurricane wide out to come in as well.

In two to three years PGE will be sold out and rocking!

I was watching channel two sports and Kate Brown announced that Cory McCaffery from Sisters High School has just given Portland State a verbal commitment. Wow! a great "Oregon/local" recruit. I believe he is the all-time rushing leader in Oregon. She stated that he will most likely move to the slotback position, then the other announcer said how PSU and Glanville picked up an exciting player that most in the Portland area hadn't had the opportunity to see. Go Viks!

Looks like a good mix of local kids to build and some JC transfers to fill the holes.

Looks like the beginnings of a good crop. I am still concerned about the lack of O-linemen and corners. And I don't see any prospect lists that make up in those areas. Hopefully the staff has some options up their sleeves. O-linemen is always one of the top areas that need continual replenishments. We cannot afford a down recruiting year in that area.

Nick Kalpin is also a standout wrestler. Perhaps this is an identity trend that works well for Portland State: cross-training football players with wrestling (and, then, possibly again with Track and Field). Talk about a year-round tune-up encompassing cross-trained advantages!

Our first O-lineman:
Tyler Staley
Offensive center
Valencia (CA) College of the Canyons
Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 275 lbs
Class: 2008 (Junior College - Dec Grad)

Sisters' McCaffrey commits to PSU

Cory McCaffrey, Sisters High School's record-setting senior running back, has given an oral commitment to play football for Portland State.

McCaffrey ended his prep career as the state's all-time leading rusher with 8,460 yards. But at Portland State, the 5-foot-10, 189-pound McCaffrey is expected to be used as a wide receiver.

McCaffrey accepted Portland State's full scholarship offer over the opportunity to walk on at Oregon and Oregon State. Air Force Academy also offered him a scholarship.

McCaffrey entered last season already owning the state's all-time rushing record with a two-year total of 5,498 yards. After rushing for 2,925 yards in 2007, McCaffrey finished 3,386 yards ahead of the state's second-highest career rusher (Vince Barrett of Sweet Home, 1988-1990).

McCaffrey is 16th in the nation in career rushing yards, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. McCaffrey was twice selected Oregon's Class 4A offensive player of the year after leading the Outlaws to consecutive championship games. He was also honored as the Gatorade player of the year for the state.

At the risk of sounding like I'm fishing for subscriptions...

If you sign up for OregonPreps.com you can read about many of these guys' decisions to commit to the Vikings. We've made an extra effort this year to track down the players that have committed to get their thoughts and in addition to the Vikings coverage you can get information on the top in-state kids in the state of Oregon.

For the most part you'll be able to read about these kids and their commitments - for example, just how McCaffrey got his full ride offer from PSU (which isn't explained in the Oregonian piece) - on our site first before anybody else.

As always, I appreciate all the support.

Jed Tai: I've subscribed. You do a great job covering the Viking signings. Keep it coming. There is a lot more drama associated with PSU because the big boys at UO and OSU already have most of their commitments and they rarely go after the Oregon prep kids.
