2008 Recruiting Thread

I hope they can capitilize on the high profile coaches. Also increased attendence figures wont hurt. Also I expect a few FBS players to come our way as well. Of course those are always 50-50. Any one know where Zach Tarver ended up going to.

Despite my posts elsewhere about FBS transfers being overrated, I am intrigued by the comments in the O about FBS transfers (or their parents) calling JG. It seems like we could get some big time WRs through this route.
 
We Have not had to worry or discuss the O-line the last couple of weeks which is nice, but we are about to lose a couple of studs in Heerspink and carvalho and seniors in Howell and Feakin I don't think we have any real depth past those guys. The fact that we even needed to bring Howell over is an issue about depth. In my humble opinion O-lineman, with a few rare exceptions, need to be groomed and grown in the system to become prolific and the college level. Maybe this is an area we can get some big time transfers in.
 
Starting caliber linemen rarely transfer. However, I think we've gotten some good recruits, namely Kleffner who should be able to start immediately. Croome too, if he can put on some weight. Add that to a more experienced Punzal and Rios, and I think they'll be better than the current crop. Outside of Carvalho, they have been really bad this year. In the R&S system, the run blockers have had issues with mobility, and smaller, mobile guys like Croome should be effective.

I have to completely disagree with you. There is no way that they will be better than the O-line that we have had the last 3 weeks in which we have averaged 2 sacks a game against a div. 1 school and a NAU team that runs a double flex defense that is an O-line nightmare.

Regarding Kleffner and Croome, If Kleffner at already 310 Lbs is going to that good he would have filled in when Punzal went down during camp since our coaches are not afraid to burn Redshirts (case and point Heubel in garbage time at SDSU). Or this last week when Rios was hurt and they had to move Heerspink inside and Howell to right tackle and Feakin back in at left tackle. Croome is 250 Lbs! if He can gain 50 Lbs and still keep his mobility all in one year then he might have and chance but will still lack any experience which is huge for an O-lineman.

What about Heerspink, I had a chance to speak with a one of the coaches last week before the NAU game and he said that Heerspink was doing great this year and was getting was getting more attention from scouts than most any other player on the team, even Carvalho. They like his size athleticism and Physicality and teams are skeptical of Carvalho's size (6'0") and feel that he is more suited for a team that runs the ball all the time (our old offense). I don't think the coach was discrediting him at all though but was just saying what the NFL seems to think.

My point is that how can an O-line that will lose two studs that both have a legitimate chance to make it to the league, lose three other seniors (Howell, Feakin, and Havili) be better than the one we have this year by replacing those guys and finding a way to add depth on top of it?
 
All I'm going to say is: How many sacks did they give up the first 3 games?

I wasn't watching the first few games, but Hewitt was faulting Heerspink for quite a few of the sacks early on.
 
I think everyone would agree we are not the same team offensively that we were in the first three weeks, thats obvious. You have to look at the team that we are playing with now. As far as Heerspink goes I listen to the games while I'm at the games and I didn't hear that at all, if the scouts like him, they like him, Heerspink is a stud up front!

have you even been watching the line of scrimmage lately? we are very solid right now and White gets touched or even hurried very little anymore. Another thing to consider is how many times we are throwing the ball now and still only averaging 2 sacks a game over the last three weeks. The stats don't lie, give the guys up front some love they really turned it around.

I'd fault the entire line in the first few games. They all looked bad. You could just pick a PSU o lineman and watch him for a series and you could bet that you'd see their guy either a) get a sack or b) make a tackle behind the line.

The o line has really played well in the last few games. Three sacks in two games? Heck, that's less than we were giving up per quarter when the year started.
 
No two people can make a group of O-lineman, but you have to love how much they turned it around. People were heaping on them from left and right and did not let that defeat them, they battled back and are still getting better! I would not be surprised by a 0 sack game coming soon.
 
A zero sack game for the offensive line with our offense dishing out about 50+ pass attempts per game would be quite the feat.
 
they've got a lineman on campus who I know would definitely play if given a scholie next year. He would be a jr next season and play most likely guard. You can see some of his ability on Youtube.com if you search under Dan Kuykendall and watch them go at it. Oh, he's number 61 in white. He played in spring camp and the spring game this season but quit shortly after to focus on school.
