It would be nice, but Texas being as large a state as it is, SMU is a long way from us here in the Texas Hill Country, but there are lots of great kids here who are overlooked by many of the programs because there is such a large number for the colleges to choose from. Also many high schools here are running the spread offense which dovetails quite well with the run-n-shoot.
 
Interesting to note that montana state hit texas HARD for its class this year. Rob Ash, the new coach, got 7 or 8 high schoolers from TX I think.

Coach Jerry Glanville’s first recruiting class hit California hard — including eight JC transfers — and loaded up with receivers to bolster Mouse Davis’ run-and-shoot offense.

Glanville likes speed on the defensive side, and believes he landed two of the fastest linebacker prospects around in David Pedersen of L.A. Harbor College and Ryan Rau of Folsom, Calif.

Some of the video I saw on GoViks of Ryan Rau was quite impressive. He's a hitter. It's going to be interesting to see how the team comes together this year.
 
On goviks.com click on the Promos button and there is an video nterview with Coach Glanville about the recruiting class. Neat new feature. Learned this from an entry by VanportVik on the o-live forum.
 
Found it. Thanks. That's an interesting interview. Glanville pushes freshmen - that's quite a change. Seems like for years we've relied regularly on JCs. Lost a few outstanding players to the Pac -10? We always will, until we win a couple seasons and maybe move up. Maybe.

Staley enjoying time at Portland State

A player who was a leader on one of the top JC squads in the state of California was College of the Canyons C Tyler Staley (6-3, 275) and the young man who was one of the top pivots in the country ended up signing with Portland State this past December and he’s having fun getting to know his new teammates as well as the getting used to the personality that is Jerry Glanville.

Clayton Valley RB commits to Portland State

Clayton Valley coach Herc Pardi checked in today to let us know that RB/DB Keith Franklin has signed a letter of intent to attend Portland State University. Franklin will receive a full scholarship.

Anyone who saw Franklin play in high school knows that he’s a very explosive player with great speed. The Vikings are getting a good one.

Way to go Keith….I know personally how hard you worked as a student and an athlete. It was great to coach and watch you grow into being a young adult. I am very proud of you as I’m sure the rest of your teamates and coaches are. I look forward to seeing you up in Portland. I WILL come watch you play.

A little guy comes up big for Las Lomas
5-6, 160-pounder is key player as Knights seek section crown

Las Lomas High junior Diante Jackson is the 6-foot-3 wide receiver collegiate offensive coordinators talk to their wives about over dinner. And while all Jackson's qualities - speed, strength, athleticism and the ability to use his length to grab jump balls - were on display last Friday night during his 112-yard second half and a four-catch final drive that capped Las Lomas-Walnut Creek's 21-17 win over Campolindo, his undersized sidekick made it all possible.

Corey Paclebar, a 5-6, 160-pound senior playing in his third year of varsity, doesn't have the dimensions of his younger teammate. But he certainly carries the same big-play spark.

With his team trailing Campolindo 17-7 in the North Coast Section 2A East Bay final, Paclebar provided a 97-yard kickoff return that helped the Knights get back into the game and eventually earn tonight's matchup with Novato for the section championship.

"It was one of the greatest things I've seen playing football," said Jackson, who scored the winning touchdown on a 7-yard pass with 42 seconds left. "We were all down, and we knew we were in it after that."

It was Paclebar's first kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

"They usually don't kick it to me," Paclebar said.

An ultra-competitive type who plays soccer in the winter and runs track in the spring, Paclebar felt the pull to extend his prep career.

"I definitely didn't want my season to end like that, especially as a senior," Paclebar said. "It was definitely one of the most emotional touchdowns. I started hearing the crowd cheering 'Corey' and I definitely started to cry a bit."

The kickoff return will be etched in memory, but Paclebar has exerted his will and competitiveness on opponents throughout the Knights' 13-0 season.

"I think he's the heart and soul of this team," Las Lomas coach Doug Longero said. "We're a different team when he's out there."

With Jackson lining up on one side of the ball and Paclebar the other, Las Lomas quarterback Max Yago tries to do his best impersonation of Tom Brady with Jackson his Randy Moss and Paclebar playing the part of Wes Welker.

"Having two college wide receivers," said Yago, who has thrown for 2,382 yards and 28 touchdowns, "it has been a dream."

Jackson has caught 57 passes for 1,167 yards and 16 touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Paclebar has caught 43 passes for 890 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's also run for 308 yards and seven touchdowns.

Opposing teams have tried their best to stop the duo, but choices have to be made, especially with running back Danny Ward rushing for 1,619 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"Both times we played them, we feared (Paclebar) more than Jackson," said Campolindo coach Kevin Macy, whose team also lost its first game with Las Lomas, 20-13, earlier in the season. "You know what Jackson is going to do. Paclebar has versatility and that speed. In both games, we completely focused on him so he wouldn't hurt us and he still did."

And therein is the dilemma Novato will face tonight.

"Diante attracts a lot of attention," Paclebar said. "And they put one guy on me, and obviously that hasn't been working. And if I'm double-teamed in games, Diante's open and he has a big game."

According to Macy, Paclebar - who has run a 10.8 in the 100 meters and a low 4.4 in the 40-yard dash - has a certain type of speed that is difficult to defend.

"It's so deceptive," Macy said. "We know he's fast, but has this hidden gear."

The burst usually comes after an effortless stride, born out of countless workouts on the track where Paclebar and Jackson are teammates on the 4x100 relay team. Jackson says he's learned so much from Paclebar - how to improve his quickness and how to run routes more efficiently. Still, the junior with a future playing on Saturdays in big stadiums has taken something more from his diminutive captain.

"He's a great leader," Jackson said. "He shows it on and off the field. He gets good grades and helps people out with their schoolwork. By watching him, I see what I need to do next year to get a leadership role."

Chris Assily: Great Year at OCC

One of the top defensive players in the Southern California JC ranks is Orange Coast (Calif.) College safety Chris Assily (6-1, 215). He was just named the Mission Conference Defensive Player of the Week too.

The reigning Mission Conference Player of the Week, Assily is coming off a strong performance against Saddleback College, where he had 10 solo tackles, forced a fumble, picked off a pass and had another breakup.

On the year, Assily has 44 tackles, yet he continues to float under the radar in terms of recruiting.

“I’ve talked to a couple of schools, mainly Hawaii and Oregon State,” said Assily. “They’ve been asking for film but they haven’t said anything about offers.”

In addition to those two schools, Assily has been receiving mail from Louisville, Utah, Southern Miss, Ole Miss and Minnesota. But the Warriors and Beavers have maintained the most contact with him.

“My options are real open right now,” said Assily. “I’m really undecided. I had an offer from UH in high school but decided to come here (to OCC) instead.”

Assily prepped at Kaiser High in Honolulu, and said he was open to going back to the islands to play his college ball. But his time on the mainland is opening up different doors.

“I’m definitely open to it, but I like the mainland and like the competition here,” said Assily.”

Assily didn’t take any official visits as a high school senior. He wants that to change this time around in his recruitment.

“I would like to take some visits because I didn’t really have any out of high school,” said Assily. “Visits wouldn’t hurt to take. I wont graduate until the spring so I can take some.”

Assily said he would have three years to play two.

Washington State defensive tackle Andy Roof was kicked out of school, four months after being arrested for allegedly head-butting a man at a party.
Coach Paul Wulff said the student conduct board decided to dismiss Roof, a 6-foot-9, 299-pound senior from Spokane.
"I was very disappointed when I heard the decision," Wulff said in a statement released by the school. "Since I arrived on campus, Andy has been a great leader for this program on the field, in the locker room, in the classroom and done everything we ask of all student-athletes."
