I am surprised that the early season home games are day games and not night games. It can be very hot in late August early September in Sac. Are day games better attended than night games? Cal Poly definately gets better attendance at night games.

My thoughts exactly, remember that davis game last year where they had people dropping like flies due to heat exhaustion. I would have preferred a 6:05 start for the first game and Sept. and then drop to day games once it cools off.

But hey, we are the last FCS team to post a complete schedule and we are in a conference! I guess this minor topic didn't cross anybody's minds in the front office?

Sperbeck requested the early daytime start. I think he believes it give us a slight advantage over other teams not used to the warm California climate.

I prefer the early season night games though.

I posted the schedule on apr 7th. On the other 2008 schedule posting....
So we've been aware of this for almost 10 days now. What the big surprise?

tyork88... We're very grateful! You'll find that often times on this board we post speculation (some true, some not), but we still always post the official Hornet release.

Thanks again for your inside info, it really did prove valuable and accurate!

If you have spent 20 years following the program you learn to never believe anything until you see it in official writing from the department. Thanks for the early insider knowledge.

Maybe we will see Sac State and Cal Poly play again in 2009. I think that 2008 will be a good year for the Hornets under Sperbeck and things will only get better in 2009. Cal Poly will be really tough in 2008. They return 10 of 11 starters off the top offense in the FCS in 2007. In 2008 they will only return 3 starters on offense (center, guard and fullback) so it would be a good year to start the series again.

Good luck to Hornets in 2008. I will be pulling for you. I hope that we will see Cal Poly and Sac State start playing again in 2009.

Hey Slo, whatever happened to Ryan Mole? I see he's on the roster, but I think he should be a SR this year.

Ryan will be Sr next year and is starting at one of Cal Poly's two Slot back positions. James Noble is the other starter. Ryan miss three game last year with a banged up knee, but rushed for 434 yards (7.7 ave) and three touchdowns. He also had another 118 yards receiving and two more touchdowns.

In Cal Poly's new triple option offense Ryan has to compete for carries with the QB, the other SB and a FB so he was limited in the number of carries he got, but he ran well when he got the ball. Cal Poly got over 800 yards rushing and 12 TDs from the QB position, over 850 rushing yards from the fullback position and 1,200 yards rushing from their top three Slot backs (Mole, Noble and Grayson). Cal Poly also threw for over 2,300 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2008.

I couldn't agree more. Its important that all the 1AA scholarship schools in California play each other.

I also would like to see some night games and a few tougher pre season games. When your a AA school you can't lose playing against a boise state and it only makes the big sky games seem easier

We are playing 1-A school. Colorado State. We really don't want to play 2 of those games in one year because yes it can hurt. As this program develops into a program which will compete for the playoffs we have to be concerned about the overall record. The Big Sky has been given an at large bid into the playoffs for sometime now. The goal is always to when the Big Sky, however a National champioship is the ultimate goal. Therefore getting into the playoffs anyway possible is big and the overall record is something that is looked at.

I take it, then, that you're running some sort of Double Wing or Fly offense? It's possible to run option out of both sets, but the Fly is usually considered to be a HS offense. The Double Wing proper hasn't been seen on a regular basis anywhere since probably the mid-'50s. If you're resurrecting something like that, it could be a good thing in terms of giving defenses fits. I STILL remember Galt High running the Single Wing up into the '90s because of the fits it gave opposing defenses. Even when they replaced that with the Wishbone, they still gave defenses problems. I'm not sure Galt had a "modern" offense until the 2000s. Good luck with your anachronist offense. More to the point, good luck to defenses in solving it. They'll need it.

Cal Poly has two WR split out, a FB line up three yards directly behind the QB and two SB or WB that are lined up less that a yard behind the outside shade of the tackles. They run the triple option, but also mix in counters and and draws. They also throw more than most triple option teams.

That's d@mn-near a cox box offensive formation.

Not sure what a cox box is. Is it similar to the old Notre Dame Box?

In any event, it leaves the door open to the Todd Dillon Run-and-Shoot/Wishbone hybrid that was successful at Delta before Dillon went to Lodi as HC. The ability to shift from a R&S set to the Wishbone and back pretty much guaranteed that the defense called was wrong AND simultaneously fixed the problem that teams like the Lions, the Falcons, and the Oilers had with the R&S: they were great at moving between the 20s, but couldn't get the firepower to muscle the ball while in the Red Zone.

The cox box has the slot / wing guys facing in towards the QB, they either pivot to block, pivot and run a pass route or go in motion to take the hand off. When both go in motion and the hand off is made behind the center it looks alot like the wing T with all the misdirection.

Thanks for the input, WH. That DOES sound a LOT like the Fly, though. The Fly, as run by the Lodi Flames under Bob Whittaker, looked and operated quite a bit the way you're describing the Cox Box. I suppose it was named after someone named Cox?
