Wow, Beseda took a break from covering Pilots basketball to write a PSU story.

Beseda's covering the Vikings and the Pilots. And he's not getting to travel with either team. The O hires freelancers to do the road games. Just another indication of cost cutting at the Oregonian.

I know, my complaint really should be directed at the Oregonian, not Beseda. Jim's coverage is really nice.

Vikings add 20 new recruit, await others

I could see this defense surprising some people this year. Yeah, they lost two really good linebackers, but they're returning all the Pedersens and Richards. If Anyaorah, Rau, Russi, and Norman can develop into contributors, they could be one of the team's strengths. We're all expecting the D-line to be good too, with Sommer added to a group of solid veterans in Beckley, Shackford, Jacobs and Ma'aseia. The big question mark is the defensive backfield. I expect Brown, Assily and Shead to start, but who else is going to step up? Wightman will fill in well too, but where is the other guy going to come from? If the new coach can figure out the answer to that question, this could be a really good unit, and the team could challenge for the playoffs. If it's a rotating door, I don't expect much more than a .500 season.

Here's culver's team highlights...Nevin Lewis is #12 and plays FS/QB. He'll be a natural WR though. He's made the small town of Culver proud.

(Most of his great highlights start about 1/3 into the video)

I think Russi will be a real guy to watch on the LB corp this year. He's got one year in the system and could make this a real solid bunch.

The secondary coach is being named tonight, right?

Vikings sign 25 recruits; six from Texas

Buffalo Wild Wings was packed, although I think a bunch of folks were there to watch the Blazer game.

These defensive recruits are loaded with talent. Yeah, it's high school video, but I like the hard hits these DL and SS guys were putting down.

If this defense isn't the best in the Big Sky in two years, we have issues, and it isn't the talent...

Far and wide
Football team adds talent from Texas, California and in state

http://www.dailyvanguard.com/far_and_wide-1.1357767

Continuing a massive roster overhaul that began two seasons ago when head coach Jerry Glanville arrived, the football team signed 25 new athletes to bolster its roster this week.

Of the 25 players added, 18 of the signees are high school seniors expected to join the Vikings this summer, four were signed after competing at the junior college level, two are transfers from other four-year institutions and another originally signed in 2008 but re-signed this year.

Glanville has placed emphasis on recruiting in the state of Texas, and continued that tradition by signing six high-schoolers from the Lone Star State. Five of the high school recruits will make their way to the South Park Blocks after playing high school football in California.

The most heralded recruit is Carl Sommer, who played several games for Oregon State before leaving the Beavers around the mid-season point. Sommer, who went to high school in Wilsonville, is expected to compete for a starting defensive end position next fall.

PSU signs two more to letters of intent

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2009/03/psu_signs_two_more_to_letters.html

Portland State football coach Jerry Glanville has announced the signing of two more student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2009 season.

The Vikings have added a pair of high schoolers bringing the total number of newcomer signees to 27 this year. Twenty of the signees are high school seniors and seven are transfers.

PSU has added Joel Sisler from Escondido (CA) High School. Sisler is 6-2, 205 pounds and competed on a team that reached the CIF finals. He earned All-CIF, All-League, All-Hall of Champions and All-North County honors in 2008.

Sisler played wide receiver and defensive line as a senior, and earned team defensive MVP honors. He will play outside linebacker at Portland State. Sisler is the fourth freshman linebacker and fifth overall to join the Vikings in 2009.

"Joel Sisler has the physical tools of a strong safety, but is tough enough and good enough to play outside linebacker. He can turn hips, run, do everything you need in the secondary but he's able to play up on the line of scrimmage," said Glanville. "That's a hard combination to find."

Also signing with the Vikings is Alex Cosenza of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ. Cosenza is a 6-3, 275-pound offensive lineman, making him the fourth signee at that position this year. Cosenza played for a team that won state championships in 2006 and 2008. He was an all-conference, all-region and all-state selection in 2008.

"We narrowed it down to what we thought were the three best offensive lineman still available," said Glanville. "We kept studying them and studying them, and our staff decided Alex was the best of the three. He'll be a force here before he leaves. He'll be a legitimate, big-time
offensive lineman."
