2009 Spring Football/Practice Reports Thread

It's right around the corner.......Now that recruiting for 2009 has ended what can we expect for the 2009 season this fall? Spring ball will give us a small preview, hopefully everything can come together this time around.

I look for the Vikings to make big strides both this spring and fall. I know JG has hinted as much.

Year three will be a big test for the coaching staff. Personally, I think Glanville, the coaches and players will be up to the challenge.

PSU may be improved, but I'm still not convinced the record will show it. The Big Sky will have too many other good teams next season.

Good point. The Big Sky is getting better year over year. Hard to rebuild when the doormats are getting up and smacking you in the face.

I wouldn't worry.

Per goviks.com today-- "A complete spring prospectus for Viking football will be released later this week"

I just thought it was a bit weird that they didn't even mention it in the press release.

They might be exploring options other than PGE Park. I think it is sometimes good for the program to have spring games out in the community at a high school or at Hillsboro stadium.

The press release did mention it. The game is at the Stott Community Field.

Isn't that the last scrimmage of spring practice?

Interesting names on the list of non-returnees:

2008 LETTERWINNERS LOST (23)
Offensive Starters (3): WR Ty Coleman, RG Clayton Rios, LT Landan Laurusaitis
Defensive Starters (4): ILB Andy Schantz, OLB KJ McCrae, CB Reggie Jones, SS Aaron Dickson
Special Teams Starter (1): K/P Danny Urrego
Other Letterwinners Lost: CB Stanley Jackson, DE Johnathan Benjamin-Nichols, DT Lloyd Talakai, WR Steve Cooper, SS Michael Wightman (transfer); ILB Logan Dose, JR LB Jake Fetzer (injury, lettered in 2007), FS Andrew Fuller, WR Mike Corral, CB Onu Onu, OL Jasper Croome, QB Jimmy Collins, SR DE John Shackford, FS Chris Assily, OLB Eloka AnyaorahFB

What happened to Anyaorah and Assily?

Portland State is a hard team to figure out. PSU had a solid team when Glanville showed up but they didn't fit his schemes very well. The next year a bunch of seniors graduated and the Coach had to recruit from the ground up. There is no doubt that PSU is getting a big boost in the talent of the recruits that now go to Portland State.

I think it is a matter of time before the team shows vast improvements, but it will take the team maturing and learning how to win each week.

The team that seems to me ready to make some noise is Northern Colorado. They get tougher each year, I just don't know how much talent they have returning.

Makes some tough but understandable statements.

I agree with everything he says. Can we get more writing from this guy?

Man the loss of Assily, Anyaorah, Croome, Onu, and Wightman hurt and I hadn't heard anything about those players leaving except Croome. Anyaorah in particular, he was arguably the top player in last year's recruiting class and I think he might have been the fastest player on the team (by 40 time).

Assily is a monster loss.

Reminded me of that guy Colt Anderson at UM.
Big Loss.

What the hell went wrong?
