2010 Commit List

I'm pretty sure Hilliard was back to practice last year bowling defenders over with two healthy shoulders for the last couple weeks. No way you burn his redshirt for two games.

I can't believe he's going to be just a Junior. With him and McCowan/Wilkins, we'll have quite the combo. Throw in a little Croxdale/Badger action and WOW, that's a deep backfield...

Dailey is off my Radar and if he's an attitude problem, he's not worth dealing with. Can you see him being content playing second fiddle to Hilliard, HeII no...

Now, will the line be as good as it has been???

Regarding the RB situation, bringing Hilliard back for one, maybe two games last year would have been a terrible decision. Also what are the chances of McCowan (So) or Badger (So) redshirting this season? The Hornets will have Hilliard (Jr)/Wilkins (Sr)/Kenslow Smith (Jr and coming off of a redshirt season)/ Croxdale (Jr ) / Markell Williams (Fr) returning. (Next years’ class in parenthesis.) I would think with a redshirt for McCowan and/or Badger (assuming they will continue to use him at RB) it will prevent a log jamming at the RB position. Plus it will prevent a large group of talented guys to exhaust their eligibility at the same time (kind of what will happen at WR after the 2010 season).

With regard to Dailey, it’s a shame to see someone with so much talent go to waste on terrible decisions. It would be nice to see him pull it together and be able to continue to produce for the Hornets, but according to some posts on this board, it doesn’t look like that will be the case. If the coaches feel that his presence on the team could cause problems, then by all means they have the right to make the decision to give him the boot. Ultimately it’s about the team and not one player.

Good post SDH, why don't we break out the returning player scenario under a separate post and keep this thread just for '10 prospects and signings?

Picked up a copy of the Fresno Bee and it had the Bee's All-Star team. It said First team 6'5" 220 OL Ben Crowder was continueing his career at Sac State. He was also the NSL defensive POY. Looks like a great pick up for the hornets.

6’-5” 220 lbs…maybe a DE prospect? Unless this kid bulks up, I would be surprised to see if the coaches put him at OL. Thanks for the link SloStang.

I thought the same thing. He also played DE and was his league's defensive player of the year so that is a good possibility.

Cowger is going to play defensive end. He is an absolute stud with a motor that never quits.

After Ben Cowger graduates from Liberty High School in June, parents Angela and Andy won't have to get rid of all their green and gold clothes.

Two-time all-league offensive and defensive lineman Ben Cowger orally committed to play football next year at California State University, Sacramento, for the Hornets, who don the same green and gold uniforms as the Hawks. Cowger will receive a full-ride scholarship to play football for the Hornets, who play in the Big Sky Conference with Portland State, Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington.

"It was the best decision for me," Cowger said. "That school fits me. The atmosphere, the coaches and team was everything I wanted. I was seriously considering going there and they went over the top on the visit. When they offered the full-ride, I took it."

Cowger is the first player at Liberty High School to receive an athletic scholarship. "It's great for Ben," Liberty football coach Mike Nolte said. "He deserves whatever is going to make him happy and I think that's going to make him happy. Anytime you send a (Liberty) kid to a college program, it opens that college's eyes to the kids at Liberty. I think he'll do great, both as a student and player."

I've heard we got a verbal commitment from this kid - a great example of the kind of player we are now attracting to Sacramento State! 3.3 gpa, three sport athlete, all CIF in football! Now that's what I'm talking about!

Here are his football stats first: 175 carries, 1,495 yards, 149.5 yards/game, longest run 80 yards, 18 TDs.

He's # 4 on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImoPTP90CF0

Kyle Brooks Earns Mayor's Athlete of the Month Award
Posted Date: 11/12/2009 8:00 AM
Tri-sport star Kyle Brooks was presented with the Mayor's Athlete of the Month Award at Tuesday night's Lancaster City Council meeting. Brooks, a senior at Quartz Hill High School, is a varsity player on his school's football, basketball and track teams.

“Kyle is a standout athlete in not just one or two sports, but three, all while maintaining a respectable academic record,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris. “This demonstrates a level of dedication and commitment that even many adults lack. This young man is truly going places, and I am proud to present him with the Mayor's Athlete of the Month Award.”

While Kyle has played varsity basketball for two years and participated in varsity track for four, he excels even more at football. Through October, his statistics thus far this season already include rushing for 1,149 yards. He has scored 14 touchdowns, and is averaging more than eight yards per carry.

Brooks was a member of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Western Division Championship Team in 2008. He was also selected First Team Golden League and First Team CIF after the 2008 season. Brooks was later named the CIF Most Valuable Player for Offense and the Old Spice Player of the Year for Southern California.

In addition to his efforts on the field, Brooks has maintained a 3.33 grade point average throughout his high school career. He is currently being recruited by Fresno State, Iowa State, Washington State, the University of Washington, Sacramento State, Oregon State and the University of New Mexico.

This kid is a 1 star recruit on Scout. He has interest from Cal, WSU, and Iowa State. Scout has him being recruited as a cornerback. Another good job on recruiting.

On another note, I have just spent the past hour or so going through Scout.com We are getting interest from a few 3 star kids, mostly all 2 star kids, and though some one stars show interest in us, we are not putting offers at 1 star at this point. I found some JC linebackers, etc that we are putting offers on. Cow Dung is not getting the same interest. Shows you how much has changed in the last couple of years.

Another commit for the Hornets:

5'11" 182 lb CB Corey Smith of Upland High School.

Hornet get a commit from a central coast player. Nipomo LB Duane Hanna. The kid is a stud.

Thanks SloStang, what does Walsh look like in his first recruiting year?
Only graduated 12 seniors so it will be a small class. So far I only know of five players that they have received verbals/signings from. Three high school players, SS Dave Douglas, SB/DB KJ Cusack, and OLB Nick Dzubnar. They signed two JC players. DE Kyle Murphy from Santa Rosa JC and AJ Caviglia from Fresno CC. I am really impressed with they players so far and I am looking forward to seeing the whole class.

Looks like the Hornets are putting together a great class.

Just a little over a week until national signing day…

SS thanks for the updates. It’s good to see Sperbeck and Co going after solid recruits.

I'm hoping next week brings good news for the Hornets! Any news or more commit details? HHD you're usually on top of these things, are you hearing anything new?
