Hawks’ star Cowger to sign with Sac State
Liberty-Madera Ranchos High football player Ben Cowger will hold a signing party at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the school’s career center.

Cowger, the North Sequoia League Defensive Player of the Year and a member of The Bee’s All-Star team, is expected to sign with Sacramento State.

SacRat - already reported this on Jan. 8th! I scooped you on this one! I think that is a first in about 10 years. Good to see you back on the board again!
HHD, I reported it on this board on Jan. 7th. I guess you could say I scooped you before you scooped Sac Rat. :)

Yeah, that is true. I was actually answering the question of what position he was recruited for, which was definitely DE.

I know, I was just having some fun. Looks like Sac State is putting together a great recruiting class.

Another commit for the Hornets:

San Lorenzo defensive lineman William Fukofuka has orally accepted a scholarship offer to play for Sacramento State in the fall, according to San Lorenzo coach Jacob Wright.

Fukofuka, who is 6-foot-3, 260 pounds, was named the HAAL’s defensive lineman of the year. He was also a second-team selection as an offensive tackle. He also held an offer from Montana State.

Chaffey High School running back Ronald Douglas, whose 2,671 yards, were the third-most in the state when his season ended in the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs, has verbally committed to Sacramento State of the FCS, formerly Division I-AA. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior, who averaged eight yards a carry and scored 24 TDs this season, also had scholarship offers from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and San Jose State.

Scout is showing the following commit:
Derek Stickney, Placentia, CA OT, 2 Stars, 6-6.5/305

This looks to be one heck of a recruiting class. 8-)

Well he is signing his NLI right now and getting faxed to Sperbeck. I only posted the link for the Winter Sports Hero just to show something current and to show his athleticism.

Sacramento State signed 17 high school players to letters of intent today, including Vista Del Lago defensive end Marques White.

The Hornets also landed wide receiver Chris Broadnax and linebacker Randy Peterson from Vanden High School, with the other 14 signees coming from throughout California.

Sac State also signed wide receiver David Black (Piedmont), utility player Kyle Brooks (Quartz Hills), defensive end Ben Cowger (Liberty), defensive lineman Todd Davis (Paraclete), offensive lineman Nate Devan (Chaparral), running back Ronald Douglas (Chaffey), defensive tackle William Fukofuka (San Lorenzo), wide receiver Eddie Gillies (Oakland Tech), linebacker Duane Hanna (Nipomo), offensive linemen Lars Hanson (Palm Desert), Devonte Martin (Fresno), Julio Regla (Bakersfield South) and Derek Stickney (Placentia El Dorado) and defensive back Corey Sims (UIpland).

The Bee did a very minimal job reporting this. There are no heights, weights, or stats listed for any of these guys! :x

Relax, this is just a first story run. Im sure they will have all of that for the morning edition...plus, as soon as all the NLI's are confirmed received, all that info will posted onto hornetsports.com.

First thought is great class - congrats to Coach Sperbeck and staff!

Anyone know what happened to James King, was a committ but he didn't sign?

King backed out of his verbal commitment and is taking a recruiting trip this weekend to Navy. He hasn't decided what to do and remains unsigned at this point.

Anyone else surprised we didn't sign a HS quarterback? Looking at the roster we will only have three quarterbacks - that's a HUGE concern.

So much for a "solid verbal"... This kid would've been fun to watch!!!

I noticed that too but I don’t think it is anything to be concerned about…yet. It will/should definitely be the top priority for next years recruiting class…that and more WR’s . (BTW I love the height of the two HS WR’s Sperbeck and Co landed in this year’s class.)

The good news is Murdaca is coming in as a junior so looking ahead to 2011, he will be a senior and Carmazzi will be a sophomore. Murdaca probably would have been redshirted this season if Smith didn’t retire, but either way they still would have needed a HS QB recruit for 2011. I would think they will recruit another JC QB as well as a HS QB heading into 2011. And there is always the outside possibility of a FBS QB not happy with his situation at his current school and wants to transfer somewhere without having to sit for a year.

Overall I think the coaches landed a solid recruiting class and have once again brought size in on both sides of the line. I like that they added both JUCO and HS DB’s for use in the secondary. I am very happy with the fact that the emphasis was on HS players and less dependence on JUCO players. I thought they might have targeted a few more WR’s given that the WR position will be devastated by graduation after this season. However the coaches did another great job on the recruiting front.

Next year the recruiting concerns will be QB and WR and I believe the secondary.

I can't tell you how geeked I am about Ronald Douglas joining this RB corps we already have...WOW
