2011 Football Schedule

I'd like to see us take it to TCU in the money game and pull out a win, but if that doesn't happen (as it probably won't), at least there are some winnable non-conference matchups on the schedule. It's great to know that the home games start a lot earlier this season, and that there are more of them.

TCU. Ugh.

Some rough openers for the BSC. EWU @ Washington will be interesting. Surprised the Huskies agreed to that game.

Well, my apologies to "CalViking" and everybody else. PSU just posted its 2011 football schedule on its website and, sure enough, it includes a home game against Willamette on October 22nd. WIth all due repsect to the Bearcats, I still find it hard to believe that the Vikings would schedule a Divison III team in football. Willamette's website still shows the Bearcats playing at Menlo College on October 22nd, so I assume that game will be cancelled or rescheduled.

Looks like the kickoff times are still up in the air...

A bonus to the fans is great plus-incentive. Regardless, I think the Viks scoring 100 points needs to be the unstated goal of the Offense and the Viks preventing a single score needs to be the unstated goal of the Defense. Viks Special Teams can punctuate these goals.

Playing against Willamette should allow our team to get a chance to work on a few things, given that we have a few conference/other notable games in between the opener and the 22nd of October.

Agreed. It's also right between two really tough road games (Montana and Eastern Washington).

Willamette football to take on Portland State for first time
Unusual Division III vs. FCS matchup is Oct. 22 in Portland

As in-state football rivals go, Willamette University and Portland State pretty much exist in different worlds.

The Bearcats are an NCAA Division III school that does not offer athletic scholarships. The Vikings, meanwhile, are in the Football Championship Subdivision, in which schools can offer as many as 63 football scholarships.
But come Oct. 22, Willamette will travel to Jeld-Wen Field to take on PSU in the first football game between the schools.
"This one kind of fell out of the sky," Bearcats coach Mark Speckman said. "They approached us. At first, we said, 'No way.' Then, when we found out that they were serious, it started to make some sense."
Speckman was looking to tinker with his schedule anyway. The school tentatively had penciled in NAIA school Menlo of California for Oct. 22, but because the program had been averaging two flights per season in the past five years, Speckman was hoping to hold the line on expenses.
Enter Portland State, which could offer a financial guarantee that no one in the state other than Oregon or Oregon State could match.
"We're in a bit of a scheduling bind," Speckman said. "A lot of Division III schools in California don't want to schedule us, and we're forced to travel to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Texas to get games.
"We know we're in for a battle. It's a difficult step up. But that's what's fun about it. Willamette is challenging academically and athletically. Our players are really excited about playing in a new stadium. It's an adventure for us.
"I don't know how many other D-III teams have ever played an FCS team that gives scholarships. Every D-III school in the country is going to be looking for the score."

Fellas - Didn't come over to talk smack, but what is the deal with your schedule next year? No Big Sky team has any business playing a Division III or an NAIA, let alone in the same year. Not only that, you've basically scheduled yourselves out of the playoffs unless you run the table in the Big Sky. Possible, but not likely.

Did you have someone back out of a game and needed to get a replacement game?

"Did you have someone back out of a game and needed to get a replacement game?"

I heard that 2 or more teams backed out of games with PSU at the last minute. I believe, one team rescheduled for another year, another team didn't sign the contract that was sent to them and ended up scheduling someone else. I guess after those schools backed out of playing PSU, it had to be pretty late in the process of picking up schools thus PSU didn't have much to select from. You have to take what you can get at that point.

Well, that begins to make a little more sense as to why PSU would schedule a Divison III team on top of a DIvision II team the same year.

That does make a lot of sense. And yes, the avilability of Division II teams is rather limited around here, so that's part of the equation as well.

Can a hoops guy get into the discussion one time only please?

I fully realize the stars have to align, but Willamette? Bringing a D-3 team to me makes no sense, but if you must do it, figure out a way to get Linfield. If nothing else, with their fan base in Portland and tradition in football, you at least would bring an extra 1,000 people into the gate, which would mean something dollar wise.

Very few Willamette fans will show up, they never do.

Thank for allowing my only comment of the year.

Well, at least Willamette is almost a guaranteed win, so that's probably why the decision was made.

Otherwise, I agree about Linfield. They definitely have a better program and more fans.

Torre Chisholm is a clueless AD. What is Willamette going to draw? I wish he would have got the job at Cal Poly. Tom Burman please come back!

Regarding Willamette, you get what you can get when you can. I understand, Willamette was a fill in for another team that backed out at the last minute. Most schools had their schedules completed by then so PSU had to scramble to find someone willing to play them, PSU choices were few. I heard PSU had several teams, who made verbal commitments to play, backed out of playing. It seems one big name team actually had the contract to play PSU on it's desk but then didn't sign it and went with someone else. In my opinion that is pretty low, agree to play then back out leaving PSU in a bind. I can't blame the coaches or AD for the actions of another school, feel they were lucky to find any team to fill those slots.

"pottystop" That is exaclty my understanding, too. Several teams left PSU in the lurch, and school officials felt lucky that Willamette was able to come to their "rescue". The Bearcats, by the way, cancelled a game with Menlo College to play the Vikings.
