2013 Recruiting Thread

I wonder if the Viks are still interested?

Abrams Still Looking

http://southerncaliforniapreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1470535" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2013 St. Mary's (Berkeley) recruit Nick Abrams thought he had his college future mapped out. Abrams, a 6-foot-3, 267-pound defensive lineman, was ready to accept an offer from Colorado State a few months ago before learning that the Rams had pulled his scholarship.

"I was surprised at first they had offered me so soon because it was a week or so before the season started," Abrams said. "But it had me excited about my future in college football. As the season continued I didn't receive any more scholarship offers but I was called by coaches from San Jose State and San Diego State. But once I realized I was probably only going to have an offer from Colorado State I tried to call them and see if I could take a tour and possibly commit. After a couple weeks of trying to reach out to CSU I hadn't gotten a call back and was worried what was wrong. At the same time I was invited to play in the California All Star game. The day before I left for the All Star game, I learned that Colorado State was no longer interested with me playing there."

That left Abrams in a tough spot. Many colleges already had their position allotments filled, and Abrams was unable to find a college home before signing day.

He's not done trying, however. Abrams is in touch with a number of football programs at varying levels of competition.

"I'm interested in Menlo college, La Verne, Sacramento State, Portland State, Pace, Wesleyan, Pacific University in Oregon, and St. Thomas in Minnesota," Abrams said. "Those are also the schools I am in contact with."

Abrams is capable of playing an interior position along the offensive line or defensive tackle. Either way, he's determined to be a great addition to the program he selects.

"I will bring a great attitude to a college program along with intangibles like leadership and energy," Abrams said. "I was elected student body president this year, and I have always been excited about football weather its working out at 6 a.m. months before the season or getting ready for game day."

Given the range of schools he's in contact with, Abrams doesn't have a hard deadline for making a decision. He's open to playing at the non-FBS or FCS level to continue his football dream.

He was a starter in the Cal State All Star game (which featured a number of future FBS signees). He also garnered Lineman of the Year honors in the Tri-County Athletic League, Rock Division his senior year, despite encountering double and triple teams on a frequent basis.

Abrams is a full academic qualifier.

Another possible late signee ?

Churchill’s Phillips undecided

http://www.registerguard.com/web/sports/29407188-41/state-phillips-boozer-churchill-decided.html.csp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Churchill offensive lineman Skyler Phillips has decided to wait until after signing day to make his college choice.

Phillips originally committed to Oregon State in October, but the Beavers withdrew their scholarship offer last month. OSU first offered the 6-foot-3, 330-pound Phillips a scholarship in the summer after he had an impressive showing at a couple of combines.

“They said I wouldn’t be a good fit and decided to drop me,” Phillips said. “I am over it. You can’t dwell on the past.”

Phillips got an offer from Idaho State last week and said Portland State is also interested in him.

“I am going to wait and see what happens after signing day,” Phillips said. “Idaho State said they are willing to wait as long as they need to.”

Phillips is considered a raw talent because he played Pop Warner in seventh grade but then did not play football again until his sophomore year when he missed most of the season because of an injury. He earned honorable mention all-Midwestern League honors as a junior and was a second-team all-league selection as a senior.

Another Churchill athlete, Ian Boozer, hasn’t decided between playing football or soccer in college, according his father, Marty Boozer. Portland State, Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State and Oregon State have shown interest in the all-state punter and placekicker.

Ian Boozer, rated the top boys soccer prospect in Oregon after an all-state season as a forward during his junior year, is considering Western Washington and Saint Mary’s in that sport. He played club soccer as a senior while focusing on football, his father said.

O.C.'s football recruiting cupboard far from bare

http://www.ocvarsity.com/sports/defensive-35862-habra-junior.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Tesoro running back Nate Tago signed with Portland State after being pursued by several FCS schools. The senior said his comfort level with the team was a big reason he picked the Vikings.

“I just felt very comfortable on my visit with the coaches, players and other recruits,” he said in a text message of Portland State. “Another factor was the number of Polynesians on the team, that definitely made me feel at home.”

Tago, a first-team All-County pick, is Samoan.

I've been spending a little time recently viewing film on several of the Viks' commits, and most of these young men I find truly worthy at the level of Big Sky competition. Maybe I'm not seeing something, but after watching several videos of several games that this one particular player participated in, I just scratch my head. He seems lost most of the time, and seldom in the mix. I wonder exactly what the coaching staff sees in him.

Hmmmm.....Size?

I'm excited to see Norcross. I don't claim to be a great judge of talent, but that kid seemed to be in the mold of Sissler and Sluss. He looked to me to have a great nose for the ball.

Definitely size! He'll play on the O-line. Most of those "highlights" show him playing D-line. I think our coaching staff can get him up to Big Sky level easy.

Central Catholic Player Commits to Vikings? I haven't seen anything official, but did notice this entry on twitter:

Feb 24 Beau Duronslet ‏@beauduronslet12
Excited to say I committed to Portland State University #goviks

https://twitter.com/search?q=%23goviks&src=hash" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, don't be surprised if Hayward Demison Jr. (another former Central Catholic player) transfers from SOU to PSU. I think he will have to sit out for a year.

On Rivals.com, a year ago, http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Beau-Duronslet-135150 , teams listed as having moderate interest in Beau were Georgia Tech, Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington, Utah, and the VIKS.

Coach Burton and Co. have done an outstanding job with this years recruiting. Im especially impressed with Coach Towns LB core. having to recruit guys ready to step in and take over when the season starts....typically recruiters stereo type specific positions to be a certain height/weight but in this case LB recruits were bases on what he saw on films and speaking with the players during their visit. Jeremy Lutali from LA Harbor a graduate from Long Beach Poly HS one of the countries top HS racked up the stat board in HS and JC. He was an under size LB & now has the chance to play in the Big Sky for the "VIKS" im expecting great things to come out of this kid if he continues to be persistent as he did in HS & JC......

"GO VIKS"

Nothing official again as of yet, but I believe there has been another late signee:

Noah Peterson- Lake Oswego 6-4 280 OL (Signed: Portland State)
1st team all league OL, Key component to Lake O line and will be the leader along with Kyle Peterson and Austin Faunce next season. He is able to move very well for a big man and will just continue to improve. One of the top O lineman in the state..Did very well at our winter invite only “elite events”. Outstanding attitude and work ethic and someone we could see playing D1 ball and doing well. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/467466/highlights/9849088" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/player-rankings/oregon-2013-updated-rankings-new/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't be surprised to see this young man on the fall roster. Not sure if he is scholarship or a preferred walk-on player.

Justin Calo- Southridge 6-1 175
One of the most dangerous big play receivers in the Northwest..2011 reg season stats’ 25 rec 627 yds, 6 Tds.. Averaging 25.1 yards per catch, one of the Metro league leaders in multiple categories..Get this kid in the open field and he shows outstanding athleticism. One of the top kick/punt returners in the state that took a couple to the house last season. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/62720/highlights/2475432" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the updates ForestGreen.

I was down at the Multnomah Athletic Club Friday night and saw Nigel giving a tour to some guys.

Vikings Add Lopez To List Of 2013 Signees

http://www.goviks.com/news/2013/3/20/FB_0320133752.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Portland State football has signed Joe Lopez to an athletic aid agreement for the 2013-14 academic year. Lopez, who played two years at Oregon State, will transfer and be available to participate in spring football at PSU.
Lopez is a 6-foot, 275-pound defensive tackle from Portland's Central Catholic High School. He played two seasons at OSU after redshirting in 2010. Lopez played in six games in 2011 and 10 games in 2012.

Lopez, who will be a junior, is one of six transfers who will take part in spring football with the Vikings. He is one of 24 student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent or aid agreements with the Vikings in 2013.

Nice pickup for the defensive line.

I see he was cited for minor in possession of alcohol at a part in 2011, so apparently Mr Lopez is a perfectly normal college student. ;-)

Gotta do something in Corvallis to occupy your time. ;) hopefully it was one of those life lesson experiences.

Interesting quite from OSU's defensive line coach Joe Seumalo, back in August of 2012:

One player who has jumped squarely into the mix is sophomore Joe Lopez from Portland’s Central Catholic High School.

“The guy who really jumps out and who’s had an unbelievable camp is Joe Lopez,’’ Seumalo said. “He’s one of squirrelly body guys who’s smart, strong and flexible.’’

You're right, anything short of stealing a sheep or being naked in a three-point stance in Corvallis, ain't that bad.

He's a nice pick up. I know we have the 3-4 change coming, but I'm liking our depth on the defensive line.
