Looks like we added a 12th game against Eastern Oregon

I believe if we are able to just hang with Cal, Viks may be able to steal a win. New coach, new system, new season. They will have a certain ripeness for the potential taking. Just believe in the possibility and act. Keep it simple.

Will we ever be able to schedule a non-conference home game against an FCS team? We haven't in many, many years. Now we don't play a meaningful game until week 4 (two guaranteed wins and guaranteed loss the first three weeks), and beating to non-D-I's does nothing to bolster any play-off chances.

These two early lower division games give the team a chance to gel against some real competition, rather than just practicing against each other. If we are ready to roll by the time we reach game four, this will have seemed like a good idea.

I doubt it will matter if we win in the BSC. After last year I'll be happy to take wins where ever they are. Humboldt, by the way, is no patsy though we'll probably beat them.

It is always good to hold respect our opponents, but we need to find our strength in optimism, not in magnifying bases in which to find fear and dread. Think like a bright Portland day, not a miserable one.

NAIA shmaia. I'm always glad to see us reaching out to the rest of the state. Don't forget our last quarterback came from Pendleton. And there are alums.

Another NAIA game scheduled by Nigel. WTF? This will really make PSU relevant in the Portland marketplace.

Is this what the PAC 12 teams say when scheduling the Viks? If we consider an opponent from a lower division unworthy of consideration, then we should abandon any pretense that playing against higher division talent has any merit to either program. We (the Viks) are very fortunate that the Beavers, Huskies, Golden Bears, or ANY BCS team fits us into their schedule and ultimately shares those revenue dollars with us, not to speak of the adventure these kids experience. These young men, whether from NCAA Div2, NAIA, or whatever, should on occasion be afforded that same opportunity. I at least give Nigel, or whoever was responsible for this addition, kudos for giving the kids at Eastern the chance to play at Jeld Wen and go away richer for it. In my opinion, what goes around comes around.

One big difference is that FBS schools can count one FCS win toward being bowl eligible. For FCS schools, like PSU, wins against lower level schools don't count toward getting into the playoffs. So, if you realistically see the Cal game as a loss and can't count the two lower level games, PSU only has 9 fcs opponents. Montana will have 11.

I know this year is strange with teams getting a 12th game as opposed to the normal 11 games. But in the past with an 11 game schedule, no team to my knowledge has ever gotten into the playoffs with less than 7 division 1 wins. My point is that whoever selects the playoff teams places a ton of importance on the numbe of d1 wins. Giving yourself 9 chances to get a win vs 11 for Montana doesn't seem fair.

With that being said, and the ultimate goal being the playoffs, there's no way PSU is playing these teams to help them out or get a tune up game. They financially cant afford to not play a FBS school each year, and with the lack of west coast fcs teams combined with travel costs, they consistently struggle to schedule non-league fcs opponents.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The comparisons don't apply. Playing lower division schools severly limit our chances of making the playoffs.

As far as I'm concerned, if we can't beat 7 of the BSC we don't deserve to be in the playoffs. Humboldt and Eastern are tune-up games; Cal is to make money. Could we have found an odd FCS team in place of Eastern? To play at home? Not a chance.

How many tune up games does Nigel need? Looking at the other Big Sky schedules, other schools seem to be able to schedule non-conf BCS games.

When you average 6000 or so fans a game, it becomes a great deal more difficult to financially support the requirements of bringing in FCS schools. If you are a Montana, and average 15-18k a game, maybe not so much of a burden.

Good point. For non-conference, you need to be able to offer an enticement. We don't have that in our back pocket, so when you look at the limited number of FCS programs on the west coast, it's tough.

What FCS program wants to lose money to travel for a non-conference game?

It is being reported on the fcs forum that the committee has decided that wins against
div II opponents will count towards the 7 win "suggested" total for playoff consideration

It's actually 25,000-26,000. :twocents:
