2014-15 Schedule

Looks like that “scheduling conflict and facilities availability” statement made by les was the joke we all knew it was. No way a D2 game against Simpson or Bristol was in the way of this game happening (as that is when the Causeway is typically held). Clearly the Nest was available; I would like to hear what his next excuse is, couldn’t schedule a bus for that week? Or maybe he could use the weather as an excuse? Those excuses would be just as absurd as his “scheduling conflict” excuse. What an embarrassment.

Not that bad of a schedule imo. Get some home games against decent programs in Fullerton and Portland and a quality opponent in UVU. More Big West action at Rivertucky and Irvine. A payday game at Gonzaga and a winnable game in Seattle. BSC schedule is meh, but a couple of games worth the price of admission. All in all a decent schedule that would have been even better had les not been such a puss about the Causeway game. I’ll be buying some tickets to some games this year.

I'm mildly disappointed in the sched. I agree about Les and his lack of balls but I wish we could have found someone better than "Bristol" to fill the opening. Two DII's on the official sched is one too many. I know it must be a real chore to get teams to come to the "Nest". Hopefully when the downtown arena is finished we can attract a couple of good DI teams to Sacramento. The longer I look at this sched, the more I like it. Can't wait to go to Spokane and cheer on the Hornets.

:coffee: hmm....let's do a quick run down of the non-conference games.

Holy Names/Menlo...not worth discussing, should be an easy win for ANY D1 teams

@Gonzaga (WCC)...by far the best game on the schedule (both non-conference/regular season), but we already knew that. This might be a great game as far as competition, but I don't think it's that great of a "payday" game. If im not mistaken, a payday game from a low tier PAC12 schools is far greater than that of Gonzaga. (if anyone knows the actual #, plz comment) *L

@UC Riverside (BWC)...any other year, this will be an even match game, but we should be able to win it with ease this year. *W

Simpson/Bristol...once again, not worth discussing -_-. We should NOT loose these 2 games *W2

Utah Valley (WAC)...very interesting game. They were 20-12 last season playing an extremely tough non-conference schedule. But the WAC was not a very good conference so their record can be deceiving. There's a very HIGH chance that they will beat us in this match up. But i think we will somehow come out with a win due to our extremely talented roster + the home court advantage. (We are very good at home) :) W*

@Abilene Christian (Southland)...I almost wrote not worth discussing, but I did some research and this IS a D1 program. Well, they just made the move from D2 this year so this should also be an EASY win. W*

@UCIrvine (BWC) this is the 2nd hardest game of the WHOLE season. UCIrvine is for-real, they are the best team in Big West Conference and should be an NCAA Tournament team this year. I dont think we will be able to win this one since we're playing on the road, but I sure hope they prove me wrong. L*

CS Fullerton (BWC)...Another BWC game, which I do appreciate. CS Fullerton was not a strong team last year, but they look to rebound with a SOLID recruiting class. Expect a battle Hornets. W*

Portland (WCC)...This team can score. period. they rank 70th in the nation in scoring last year, quite impressive. I think we wont be able to get this one, we have a hard time keeping up with high potent-offense. L*

Seattle (WAC)...Seattle has a rich school history when it comes to basketball. But theyre absolutely terrible in the 21st century. Should be an easy W*

@Utah Valley (WAC)...second go-around with UVU in the same season. This will most likely be a lost (Read up top for the reasons why) L*

DI Record: 6-3
Overall Record: 8-3
BPI/RPI: Will NOT be good -_-. Atleast we will be playing 3 possible NCAA tournament teams (Gonzaga/UCIrvine/Utah Valley) :coffee:

No disagreements here. Note that the first 2 games are exhibitions, and those are always playdown schools. Gonzaga is a "power" school, they are paying us something to go there and we typically schedule 2 home D2 games because no one will come to the Nest. This schedule is one of the better ones in recent years. Our RPI is always low, mostly because of the crappy conference we are in. Ironically enough not playing dungpile will help the RPI a little as they have been one of the worst teams in D1 in recent years.

PGP, I know we've speculated that the new downtown arena will be leveraged to get better OOC games in town, but has anyone within the department actually said this is the plan? We do it for baseball with Raley Field, hard not to imagine we wouldn't consider it for hoops.

I don't have any inside info just speculation and hope. Logically the downtown arena would be a possible way to prove the worth of an on campus venue. Kind of thinking ahead of myself.

If I'm not mistaken, they already have plans in the works for a new arena on campus. (Should be around the 6000-7000 seats range). They had a few students meeting last year about it. As far as the Kings arena goes, it will be a little bit difficult because there will be scheduling conflicts itself with the Kings and media events plus it will cost a little too much for the school at the moment.

These are the few teams I hope Sac State schedule For their future non - conferences games.
Cal (Pac12)
Stanford (Pac12)
Santa Clara (WCC)
Saint Mary (WCC)
San Francisco (WCC)
UoP (WCC)
Fresno State (MWC)
San Diego State (MWC)

*Pac12 schools are always looking for low level D1 schools to come to their house and play. We just have to make it happen.
*WCC we're already doing that now, but a little California is always fun
*MWC especially SDSU, they are now officially a power house program, and just like other Pac12 schools, they're looking for low their D1 schools to fill their schedule at home. Plus, San Diego State rosters in previous years has been filled with Sac - Area star recruits, so I'm guessing in will be a fun game for everyone.

The on-campus events center is dead as far as I'm concerned. Time to look elsewhere for facilities.

I would love to see these teams match up against Sac but you aren't going to get any of these teams to come to the Nest. If you could schedule one or two of these types of teams to play in the new downtown arena then you have at least brought more attention to the Hornets and if we could beat one of these teams it would give you a big boost in recruiting. If you remember, we got Hornsby to sign after we beat Utah. Those types of games are the route we have to capitalize on to recruit the better athletes.

I see College Sports Madness has Portland ranked #89 in the nation. That would be a feather in our cap to knock them off in the Nest.

Is anyone else excited about playing Idaho? *Not being sarcastic

We don't have any choice since Fullerton gave them a special deal to be in the BSC without having to commit their football program. Why would anyone be less excited about playing Idaho than UNC, North Dakota or the other irrelevant schools to Californians that the BSC provides?

This. Just another school we have nothing in common with. Although unlike some, I like the 12 member lineup for hoops and the adjusted schedule. Yeah we won't get everyone at home (or on the road) but that is the trade off of having more manageable travel in conference and less trips to podunk places no one wants to travel to in the middle of winter.

Women's schedule went up today.........shouldn't be long til Men's gets posted
It's beyond brutal...and almost exclusively on the road. :|

Does anyone have a reason why Harkleroad has the women's team playing four Pac 12 teams? Last year he also had two Freshman players play minimum time, which blew their red shirt.
My guess is for the money. Or maybe he thinks the women's team will be able to get a win or two against the Pac12 and raise the profile of this program. Can't fault him for wanting to make a splash, just too bad it will have to be made on the road.

Alright sports fans... As depressing as this weekend was for football, I figured I'd get out this year's picks for you all to impress your friends.

I see you missed counting a win on the overall record after the second North Dakota game which makes your final record 17-12. I'm going out on a limb and predict a 20 win season. A few more road wins in BSC play and maybe one or two more wins OOC. I think it is attainable for this group. I know Katz is really stressing winning on the road. Hope the experience of the leaders of this team makes the difference on the road. I can see us winning both games against UVU because they lost almost everyone from last year. I also don't see us losing at UND, UNC or PSU. That leaves us at 8-3 OOC and 14-4 in BSC. Sure hope I'm right and your wrong Kadeezy. 22-7 overall.

I agree with PGP. UVU will have a lot of holes to fill, as will UND as they graduated a ton of talent after last season. I'm guessing we split UVU and sweep UND. If things break the Hornets way, 20 wins is not out of the question. I'll settle for more modest gains from last season and hope for at least a winning record and a win or two in the BSCT. The beauty of this season is that the "Sky" is the limit.

It has taken 7/8 yrs. to get to 20 wins. That is either awesome or pathetic.

Given the sad state of facilities and playing NAIA schools or less, I guess this is good.

I'd like to see 20 wins against DI competition to be impressed.
