It's usually mid August. Seems like it is about 4 weeks prior to the first game. I'm sure there is a NCAA rule on it. It may be on the NCAA's sight for the football calendar. I think a Google Search is in order.

From what I could find, You get three weeks of practice prior to your first game. That puts us at around the 10th or 11th of August. That is my SWAG, after limited research.

I heard it starts August 5.

What should we expect? Who are our top returners? Are there going to be any surprises on the roster? Major changes in offense or defense? Going to be fun to watch!

Just noticed that the kicker, Hintze, is no longer listed on the roster. There is no kicker listed there, just the Punter Jacob DeMaio. Anyone have any scoop on who will be kicking for the Wildcats this year?

You could probably have a student tryout before each game and come up with a fair kicker. The really good ones are a bit harder to find. If you don't have a top kicker, you might as well not waste a grant on it. :twocents:

Also, Billy Green and Kelly Helinski are both officially off the roster.

Interesting... We could be in a world of hurt if Jadrian gets hurt or struggles again.

Or if he plays like he has for the last three seasons.

He hasn't been benched yet. IF he keeps playing like he has, then he keeps starting. :ohno:

With all the talk around about the garbage WSU basketball home schedule, Thank goodness WSU FOOTBALL Starts Today!!!! They do have a legit schedule, and a damn good chance to be a very good team. Strap it up, its football time!!

Let's get down to business.

What are our strengths and weaknesses, and also, what is a respectable depth chart?

Strengths:
DEFENSE!!! Weber ended up being the top defensive team in the conference last year. Thankfully, we really didn't lose to many defensive anchors. Yes, we lost some guys such as Devonte Johnson, Vince Coleman, and John Carlson to graduation, and Jake Gallegos, Karsen Liljenquist, and John Leilua all left the team with eligibility remaining. Even with them leaving, Jay Hill returns a stout defense anchored by a handful of defensive stars. I am worried about our ends. We took a serious hit at that position since the last season ended, but I'm sure that Kaufusi will be able to mold some young talent and get some great players to replace Carlson and Coleman on the ends. If not, we can always go to a 3/4 type set up. I'm predicting that Weber's defense will once again lead the Sky, and that they will end up be even better than they were last year. What is that old adage? Offense wins games, defense wins championships.

What makes the defense so spectacular? First, the linebackers. Emmett Tela, Jarad Afalava, and Tre'von Johnson are three of the best in the Sky, if not in the country. If we have to go to a 3/4, Alema Key, Legrand Toia, or Landon Stice can come in and help out right away. In our secondary Josh Burton at Safety and Taron Johnson at CB are both going to have all-conference seasons. Finally, in the middle we are stacked. We might have lost Jake Gallegos, but McKay Murphy is back after last season's injury. One major concern is youth on the line and inexperience with our ends.

OFFENSE: Running backs, TE and Offensive Line, also, it is really nice having the services of Cameron Livingston for another season. The offensive line is going to be really good. Senior transfer Chase Larson anchors the line in the middle with all-conference talent on both side of him in the form of Cameron Young and Baron Bruce. With another all-conference guy in Calvin Steyn next to Young. I've heard that former DE Iosua Opeta will start at the other tackle position.

Weakness:
QB: This is a serious concern. Last season Jadrian Clark got off to a slow start and never really wow'ed anyone enroute to a 6-5 season. Our offensive production was inept and frankly frustrating. Teams knew that we couldn't throw the ball well and so would pack the box limiting our run game. As the season progressed, it seemed as if we got better at passing the ball, but still never really improved since the teams we could pass against were some of the worst defensively in the country. I worry about our receivers a bit, but if the ball is either too high, behind you or too low, it doesn't matter how awesome of a route you run, the QB just isn't delivering the ball well.

I am so excited for football season to get going!!! For the first time in several years, I feel like we actually have a shot at competing for the Big Sky Championship and making the playoffs.

I think the thing that I'm most excited about is how Coach Hill and his staff have worked to change the attitude, pride, and identity of the team. From what I can tell, it seems like the team has really bought into his style and system. We started to see the culmination of that unity the second half of last season. Remember the video that surfaced after the Montana game of the team singing the fight song in the locker room? For the first time in a while, we have a team who has the right attitude and mentality to win. Hill deserves a lot of credit for picking up a program that was in absolute ruins and making it a contender in just a few short years.

I too am excited about our defense. I'm particularly happy about what we've got in the linebacker unit. Tela is a beast. He's the first Wildcat I've seen in probably six or seven years who I think has a realistic shot at the NFL. In my humble opinion he's the best player we've got on the team. Our linebackers are going to scare the hell out of offensives all year long. I'm also really optimistic about our secondary. Burton and Johnson are capable of locking down any passing game in the conference.

I'm cautiously optimistic about our offense. Fortunately we have a good offensive line. This should give Clark plenty of time to make his reads and check down if need be. When things break down, we know he can run the ball. I don't think that Clark can play at an all-conference level, but as a senior, he's got to bring his A-game and play well enough for his team to win. With a solid line, our run game should be good again. And of course, as the cliché states, a good run game opens up a good pass game and vice versa. We'll see how things shake out. Like I said I'm cautiously optimistic…

Games we should win:
Sacramento State
UC Davis
Southern Utah
Cal Poly
Idaho State

Games that I think will be close:
South Dakota
Montana State
North Dakota

Games I'm worried about:
Utah State
Portland State
Northern Arizona

I think a realistic expectation for the season could be 7-4. Of course, no one knows how it's all gonna shake out, which is what makes it so much fun! Football season can't get here soon enough!!! I just bought my tickets for the game up in Logan on September 1st. I'll see you fellow Wildcat fans there!

...and a damn good coach! I couldn't be more impressed with what Hill has been able to do in a short time at WSU. He, indeed, has changed the culture and continues to revive a program on life support. I love seeing him at the bball games (that I still attend,) fully supporting his school. He's a good guy, great coach, and class act.

He's a very exciting player to watch. The entire defense has been entertaining and are who has me most excited for this season to start. I'd love for Weber to put a scare into aggies on the backs of this D and completely erase the memory of the last meeting/disaster.
