2017-18, Way Too Early Predictions

Judging by how they did last year, who they have coming back, how they have recruited, and known coaching results, here is my best WAG.

UND
UM
WSU
EWU
UI
MSU
ISU
UNC
NAU
SAC
PSU
SUU

There will surely be some summer time changes and additions. There will also be teams that put it all together better than others. The chances of it ending the way that I predict are, obviously, quite small. any one of the top five could win it all. :coffee:

My take: Vic Sanders won't stay in the draft, and Idaho will be a runaway favorite to win the league next year. They'll have had nearly the same team for three straight years. Got derailed when Callandret got hurt.

ESPN has Idaho going to the dance. They have everyone back so they deserve top spot.. I like Mt. St. 2nd... Idaho St. and No. Az look in need of help....League looking super balanced and improved

I have to give UND the nod until somebody knocks them off their perch. I agree that UI will be very good if Vic comes back. However, they did loose a couple of seniors who were 'glue' kind of guys. They also picked up a couple of promising recruits. UM has added the size they needed to go along with their talented guards. Likewise, Weber has added size and significant talent to its front court. ISU has added significant size and rebounding to their roster, while removing a couple of cancerous growths. EWU replaced Wiley with a 3 star SF. UNC has added a talented European big man and depth at guard. NAU has added a couple of 5th year, DI transfer guards and a big man. They also lost a huge amount of talent to graduation and transfer. SUU, Sac, and PSU just have a lot of holes to fill. MSU looks to be quite similar to last year, but with one more year of maturity, should be a little better. Did I leave anyone out? :coffee:

MSU will be better. They return virtually everyone plus add two solid D1 transfers. They finished 5th this season and if they aren't top 3 next season I'd be very surprised.

They got a 6'6'' transfer from UVU and a 6'6'' guy from Mississippi St. Both look like solid role players, not stars. Their best guys are still Hall and the PG Frey. They were in need of size and rebounding and I think they did pick up a big man. They will be better, but may finish about the same. :coffee:

My opinion will probably change once official rosters are published, but...

1. Idaho
2. Weber
3. Montana State
4. North Dakota
5. Montana
6. Sacramento State
7. Eastern Washington
8. Southern Utah
9. Northern Colorado
10. Idaho State
11. Northern Arizona
12. Portland State

1-4 are very close
5. is on an island
6-12 who knows...

I'm not totally sold on UI at this point. They lost Callandret and two solid role players who contributed a lot to their program. They will be playing Vic at the point because they don't really have any other alternatives. They recruited 6 freshmen and some look fairly good on paper, but they are freshmen. Yes, they have one of the best returning players in the league in Vic Sanders, but is that enough. I think they finish about like they did last year. The league, as a whole, seems to be building to something better than the last two years.

callendret not getting a redshirt for last season??? only played 2 games...he should be able to play next season

Agreed Scout...I was under the impression that Callendret was going to get a medical red shirt and get his Senior year back. That is why I think UI has the upper-hand right now.

No matter, I could see UND, MSU, Weber and even Montana winning the Sky next season, along with UI. There is a lot of parity in the league right now. Weber's issue is youth and experience. It really depends how quickly our newbies gel with the rest of the team. We have heard how good some of our young guys are, but one really doesn't know until they hit the floor in November. I'll be honest, I would be a lot more confident in Weber's chance, if Coach is able to get another guy who can contribute automatically with that 13th scholarship. Yes, our depth is solid, and the talents there now, but...there are a lot of new faces along with a number of major questions, like:

Who will play the point?
Will Coach try to play Brekkot at the 3?
Which FR will emerge as contributors and who will potentially red shirt?
Will Jordan Dallas take that all important next step in his development?
Will Braxton take that next step?
How will we be able to cut down on turnovers?
Who will take the reigns and help us improve in rebounding and limiting teams second chances (must limit opposing teams offensive rebounding)?
Will our SR's lead?

If Callandret is given a red shirt year then UI has 15 guys now listed as on scholarship and will need to lose two more guys. I don't know what his status is, but UI has signed guys like he has not got eligibility left.

I'm relatively positive that Brekkott will be a dominant guy whether he is in the post or on the wing. How dominant? Who really knows until we see him in a few games. I have a feeling that he will be an impact guy like Wiley was last year. Point guard? we have three good candidates, maybe 4. Turnovers were an issue last year. I'm hopeful, but who really knows. With our additions, rebounding should improve. It can't get a lot worse, can it? I haven't a clue as to who may emerge as leaders. It could be freshmen for all we know. Our seniors have been quiet sorts of guys. Player development is always a crap shoot. Coaches can preach and teach, but all of the motivation must come from the player.

I figured that Brimhall's days were numbered. I didn't know anything about Blair.

Getting a 6'7" grad transfer from Iowa aND a PG transfer from Creighton, UND is just reloading. The team was young last year. Hooker graduating is rough, but Crandall and Stewart are capable.

iowa transfer injured most of the time never productive at Iowa, also lose baldwin and shanks.... not exactly reloading ...

I my feeble mind, UND is still first until someone knocks them off. I also believe that there will be surprises. Last year, when EWU picked up Wiley, it catapulted them into contention. They would have been good, but not that good.

IMHO, the best recruiting classes, based on needs and talent, are:

1) WSU
2) UM
3) UI
4) EWU
5) SUU
6) ISU
7) NCU

Drick Bernstine at UND is also a grad transfer now, as was Shanks. Need another C/F transfer now like Jones from Iowa
