2018 Recruiting: 9 Signed to LOI + 7 Verbals - Updated 01/30

My guess is Idaho will be our biggest threat to winning the BSC. They picked up one hell of a class this year, one can hope some of these players are non-qualifying.. Yes, am wishing bad things on the Vandals. Might as well start the former Governor's Cup game smack talk. Their first BigSky game is against UC Davis and should be a good measuring stick.
2018 Class:

Their RB is 5'9" 240lbs and was HS Mr. Football runner up in FLORIDA at the 5A level. Can anyone say Jerome Bettis? His feet aren't quite as good, but this isn't Notre Dame either.

The classes Eastern has had the past 4 seasons are good enough to keep us in the hunt for the Natty. Let's see what the OC can do with a season under his belt and a seasoned OL, senior QB and loads of talent. Not holding out any hope that the defense will improve given the on again off again jekyll and hyde nature. Like Grinch's take on defense at WSU "get the ball back, if we give up a few big plays, it doesn't matter because of the big time offense". Prefer it to the bend and break that has been employed.

Interestingly, we didn't go head to head with Idaho much in this cycle. They picked up a good number of CC kids, which is something we haven't done in forever. I'd wonder if some of their guys will have difficulty qualifying. I'm not saying that's the case, but looking at some of the kids they brought in, you'd wonder if they were passed over due to qualification issues.

It's another good class for Eastern, and just like you said, that's four solid classes in a row. The last middle-of-the-road class we had was the one that graduated this year. But I still worry about the defense. I'd still like to see us in the market for a DT transfer, because that seemed to be a particular problem area last year, especially when we lost Tiuli so early.

He looks exactly like a player my boys played with in how smooth he runs, his quicks and how he sinks his hips at contact to break tackles. Plays bigger than he is. This is CA 2A. I posted that interview because I liked his attitude. Hope he sticks.

Idaho picked up some hosses on the OL (2 340+ lb'ers) and at least one DE that might be NFL capable. Thought they played hard in the games I watched and lost some close ones. Their travel had to suck. Anyway, the point is Idaho is going to have an instant impact and could easily compete for the BigSky and more. Of course their are always lots of factors, but expect them to be angry about the move down with something to prove. Note they have a late season game at Florida. SEC regularly schedules FCS games in November before their rivalry games. Not the scheduling guy.

Last year, my son was on EWU's radar but ended up going to a JUCO in California. The number one thing that hurt him coming out of high school was a low GPA. He informed the staff that he was going to go the JUCO route to get the grades up and get his AA and perhaps they might look to bring him in afterwards? He was told "We don't recruit Junior College players". Sucks that my boy won't have the opportunity to play in Cheney, but we've heard that that isn't uncommon for coaches to be wary of recruiting the JUCOs, often times the thinking is that "there's a reason he ended up there and we don't want to have to deal with that here".

It was a good decision for him to head to California...not only did he play as a Freshman and have a very successful season, but he's also pulling a 3.6 GPA! Made Dean's List for Fall Semester 2017, first time he'd EVER earned academic honors! And this was while playing football and taking "real" classes! (No Basket Weaving or Underwater BB Stacking!)

For what it's worth, I don't believe there is a hard and fast policy of no JC kids. It's just not our MO. WThe coaches prefer to develop kids over 4-5 years, which is understandable. Taking a transfer from JC or elsewhere still happens. It's just a lot more rare at Eastern than some other places.

Agreed, and I don't personally have a problem going the JUCO route when there is a need. It seems like a cultural thing in terms of a desire to have kids who will be in the program for 4-5 years more than anything else.

I think this also applies to P5 transfers. Some programs really depend on them and it suits a lot of programs well. We don't seem to do that much, either, and the only thing I could really point to is culture.

Great class! I need to clean this thread up with the final results, but it turned out basically as predicted with a couple of surprises.
